Mina de Sao Domingos - Mertola - Portugal HD
The mining area of Sao Domingos, part of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, was from ancient times a sought after place for the extraction of minerals and there is evidence of gold, silver and copper mining works since the pre-Roman and Roman period.
Its modern operation began in 1854, at the initiative of the “Mason & Barry” mining company, which continued to operate it until 1966, with around 108 years of regular operation extracting more than 20 million tons of ore (copper, zinc, lead and sulfur). Mina de S. Domingos was the largest Portuguese mining area until the 1930s, with a continuously labour force of over a thousand workers. The mine provided a local development level much higher than the one experienced in the rest of the country. Here it was built, for example, one of the first railways to make the connection between the mine and the old river port in Pomarão. Also here it was built the first power plant in Alentejo. The local community also had accesses to a local hospital and movie theatre among other facilities.
The end of the mining exploitation – combined with the absence of an adequate rehabilitation, abandonment and subsequent vandalism of the remaining heritage – dictated the progressive decay of the territory and the population exodus. Nowadays, the development strategy is focused on the search for resolutions to the environmental problems and to the protection and valuation of the mining heritage.
On the 3rd of June 2013 the mine and urban area of Mina de S. Domingos was classified by the Portuguese authorities as a “Set of Public Interest” and currently this urban area and also the old industrial complex are part of a tour circuit that evokes the history and the living memory of the mine.
MINA DE SAO DOMINGOS IN THE AMAROK | MÉRTOLA, PORTUGAL
Mina de Sao Domingo. Individual Travel at its best. The Sao Domingo Mine close to Mértola, Portugal.
I received a recommendation from an AirBnB Host to visit that copper mine. Open from around 1850 to 1965 and run by the English - now it’s a deserted place which could be a movie set, or is it maybe… looks like a moon landscape and it is especially fun if you go in your 4x4 to that place.

Alcoutim Algarve Portugal HD
Alcoutim is a small village situated on the shore of the great river of the South, the Guadiana. It marks the transition between the Algarve and the Alentejo and between Portugal and Spain, on the other side of river.
The human presence in Alcoutim dates back to the Palaeolithic period, and there are vestiges of the continuity of human communities in the following periods, such as the Bronze and Iron Age, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Reconquest.
A passenger ferry to Sanlúcar de Guadiana, Spain is available but does not take motorized vehicles. By road the distance is 70 km.
From here it is possible to go on a boat trip and visit Mértola.

Fatima - Portugal HD
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima (better known as the Sanctuary of Fatima), located in Cova da Iria, Fátima, Portugal, is one of the most important Marian shrines in the world.
In 1917, the year of the Soviet revolution, Jacinta Marto, Francisco Marto and Lúcia dos Santos, known as the three little shepherds, said they had witnessed six apparitions of Our Lady on May 13, .
In the essential part of the message, the apparition would have asked that the rosary be prayed every day, conversion, and penance.
In one of these apparitions, he asked to build a chapel in that place, which is currently the central part of the Sanctuary where an image of Our Lady of Fatima is displayed.
Over the years, the Sanctuary has been expanded, with two basilicas already existing, thus increasing the capacity of welcoming pilgrims in a covered area.
The Sanctuary of Fátima consists mainly of the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Rosary Hall / terrace, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and colonnades, retreat house of Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Rectory, retreat house of Our Lady of Sorrows and hostel For the sick, Pius XII and Paul VI Pastoral Center, as well as the vast Basilica of the Holy Trinity, inaugurated on 13th October 2007. The Lausperene Chapel ('Laus Perene' stands for Permanent Praise) (where it is permanently exposed The Most Holy Body of Christ in the Consecrated Host) and the Chapel of Reconciliation, dedicated to the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).
