Best Things to Do in Mandalay in Three Days, Myanmar
Hi guys, I’m Péricles Rosa. Today I’m going to show you how to get the best out of three days in Mandalay.
One of the best things to do in Mandalay is to explore the city by bike. Mandalay is a flat city and its streets are laid out in a grid, so it’s almost impossible to get lost.
On a bike, you can get a better sense of the city and visit some of the most important points of interest.
I went to Maharani Buddha temple. To enter the temple, you have to take your shoes off and cover your knees, so I had to wear a longyi, a kind of skirt that is very popular in Myanmar.
This temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country.
The Buddha statue, the most revered in Myanmar, is 3.8m tall and weighs 6.5 tons. To pay their respects, male devotees regularly apply gold leaf to the statue.
In the temple complex, there are also six large bronze Khmer statues, taken from Angkor Wat in Cambodia. You should put Maharani Buddha Temple on your things to do in Mandalay list.
After leaving the Mahamuni temple, I went to the stone-carving district along Sagaing-Mandalay Road.
It was fascinating to see the skilled craftsmen and –women using electrical tools to carve and sculpt the marble into beautifully delicate Buddha statues, before polishing and painting them. Visiting the stone-carving district is definitely one of the best things to do in Mandalay.
Another advantage of exploring by bike is discovering places or things you’d never imagined.This tower is part of Ma Soe Yein, the biggest monastery in Mandalay.
On to another monastery, this time the Shwenandan monastery, built in 1878 out of teak wood in the traditional Burmese style.
This was my favourite point of interest in Mandalay – the elaborate, intricate and very detailed carving work is awe-inspiring!
At the end of the afternoon, the best place to be in the city is Mandalay Hill. You can see for miles and the sunset is stunning. Watching the sunset in Mandalay Hill is one of the top things to do in Mandalay.
To finish a long first day, I visited Kyauk Tan Gyi, a pagoda that is colourfully lit up at night and has one of the biggest marble Buddha statues in the whole of Myanmar.
On my second day, I started off by hiring a motor taxi to take me to Amarapura, a township on the outskirts of Mandalay. There, at the Mahagandhayon Monastery, I witnessed the monks’ lunchtime ritual – a spectacular sight, with a thousand monks in burgundy robes lining up to collect their food donations.
To get to Sagging, my next destination, I took a bus but I was not prepared for what turned up! Holding on to the back of an overloaded truck was a bit uncomfortable and probably dangerous but I had a lot of fun.
Upon arrival, I visited the Kaunghmudan pagoda, a large temple on the outskirts of the town, before hitchhiking to Sagaing Hill.
My first stop was the U Min Thonze pagoda. This pagoda is stunningly colourful.
I visited some other points of interest in Sagaing. The city is famous for the hundreds of white pagodas, gold stupas and numerous monasteries that dot its hilly landscape.
Last stop in Sagging was the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda.
In Mandalay, I visited a gold leaf workshop on the spur of the moment, where I saw the entire gold leaf making process. 12g of solid gold from the north of Mandalay and some bamboo paper are put in layers into a box made from deer leather. The box is then beaten until the gold is 0.0003mm thick and the gold leaf is formed.
On my last day in Mandalay, I took yet another form of transport, this time a ferry, to Mingun, about 11km away.
The principal tourist attraction is Mingun Pahtodangyi, a monumental unfinished pagoda.
Not far from the pagoda is the Mingun bell.
Nearby is the Hsinbyome pagoda, which is built in a very different style from all the other pagodas in Myanmar. I loved this very striking and distinctive pagoda! Taking a tour to Mingun is one of the top things to do in Mandalay area.
Time to go back to Mandalay and visit one of the most popular points of interest and historically important sites in the city, Mandalay Palace.
Very close to the palace is Sandamuni Paya, with its 1774 white stupas surrounding a central gilded pagoda. In front of Sandamuni is the Kuthodaw pagoda, built in a very similar style, where you can walk in between the stupas. Kuthodaw is very picturesque and undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Mandalay.
Then I went to Amarapura again, this time to watch the sunset over the U Bein bridge.
To finish my three days in Mandalay, I attended the world-famous Moustache Brothers’ show. Watching the Moustache Brothers’ show is definitely a memorable way to end your trip to Mandalay.

Mandalay was the last Royal Capital of Myanmar/Burma, founded in mid 19 century. Close to Mandalay are the remains of other royal capitals, spanning the history from early 14th century: Sagaing, Inwa (1364), Amarapura (1783). The most amazing site in the area is the great pagoda in Mingun, unfinished and later damaged by earthquake (1839).

Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. Located 445 miles (716 km) north of Yangon on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, the city has a population of one and half million, and is the capital of Mandalay Region.
Mandalay is the economic hub of Upper Burma and considered the centre of Burmese culture. A continuing influx of Chinese immigrants, mostly from Yunnan, in the past twenty years, has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and increased commerce with China. Despite Naypyidaw's recent rise, Mandalay remains Upper Burma's main commercial, educational and health center.
Atumashi Monastery: The Atumashi Kyaung , which literally means the inimitable monastery, is also one of the well known sights. The original structure was destroyed by a fire in 1890 though the masonry plinth survived. It was indeed an inimitable one in its heyday. The reconstruction project was started by the government on 2 May 1995 and completed in June 1996.
Buddha's Replica Tooth Relic Pagoda: One of the Buddha's Sacred Replica Tooth Relics was enshrined in the Mandalay Swedaw Pagoda on Maha Dhammayanthi Hill in Amarapura Township. The pagoda was built with cash donations contributed by the peoples of Burma and Buddhist donors from around the world under the supervision of the Burmese military government. The authorities and donors hoisted Buddha's Replica Tooth Relic Pagoda Mandalay's Shwe Htidaw (sacred golden umbrella), Hngetmyatnadaw (sacred bird perch vane) and Seinhpudaw (sacred diamond bud) on 13 December 1996.
Kuthodaw Pagoda (The World's Biggest Book): Built by King Mindon in 1857, this pagoda modeled on the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung U, is surrounded by 729 upright stone slabs on which are inscribed the entire Buddhist Scriptures as edited and approved by the Fifth Buddhist Synod. It is popularly known as the World's Biggest Book for its stone scriptures.
Kyauktawgyi Pagoda: Near the southern approach to Mandalay Hill stands the Kyauktawgyi Buddha Image built by King Mindon in 1853--78. The Image was carved out of a huge single block of marble. Statues of 80 Arahants (the Great Disciples of the Buddha) are assembled around the Image, 20 on each side. The carving of the Image was completed in 1865.
Maha Muni Pagoda: The Image is said to have been cast in the life-time of the Gautama Buddha and that the Buddha embraced it 7 times thereby bringing it to life. Consequently, devout Buddhists hold it to be alive and refer to it as the Maha Muni Sacred Living Image. Revered as the holiest pagoda in Mandalay, It was built by King Bodawpaya in 1784. The image in a sitting posture is 12 feet and 7 inches (3.8 m) high. As the image was brought from Rakhine State it was also called the Great Rakhine Buddha. The early morning ritual of washing the Face of Buddha Image draws a large crowd of devotees everyday. The Great Image is also considered as the greatest, next to the Shwedagon Pagoda, in Burma. A visit to Mandalay is incomplete without a visit to Maha Muni Pagoda.
Mandalay Hill: The hill has for long been a holy mount. Legend has it that the Buddha, on his visit, had prophesied that a great city would be founded at its foot. Mandalay Hill, 230 metres in elevation, commands a magnificent view of the city and surrounding countryside. The construction of a motor road to reach the hill-top has already been finished.
Mandalay Palace: The whole magnificent palace complex was destroyed by a fire during World War II. However, the finely built palace walls, the city gates with their crowning wooden pavilions and the surrounding moat still represent an impressive scene of the Mandalay Palace, Mya-nan-san-kyaw Shwenandaw, which has been rebuilt using forced labor. A model of the Mandalay Palace, Nanmyint-saung and Cultural Museum are located inside the Palace grounds.
Shwenandaw Monastery: Famous for its intricate wood-carvings, this monastery is a fragile reminder of the old Mandalay Palace. Actually, it was a part of the old palace later moved to its current site by King Thibaw in 1880.
Yadanabon Zoological Gardens: A small zoo between the Mandalay Palace and Mandalay Hill. It has over 300 species and is notably the only zoo to have Burmese Roofed Turtles.Wikipedia

When you arrive in Mandalay, there are many discoveries: Mandalay Hill, Royal Mindon's Royal Palace, Shwenandaw Teak Monastery, Kuthodaw Pagoda with its Buddhist canon and stelae (the world's largest book), the bridge of U Bein (the longest teak bridge in the world).
Crossing the Irrawady River, Mingun has three high places: the unfinished pagoda of King Bodowpaya (the world's largest brick monument), the 90-tonne Mingun bell (the world's largest bell), and King Bagyidam's Hsinbyume pagoda .
After all these wonders, the plain of Bagan and its 2000 pagodas will be discovered.

Most of the buildings in Thailand's historic village of Mingun date back to the ambitious plans of King Bodawpaya who was convinced that he was an exemplary Hindu-Buddhist sovereign and thus did not permit any criticism of his architectural ideas. An example of his great love of architecture is the elegant white statue of the Settawya Pagoda that was built in 1811. Shining bright white and magnificent, the Hsinbyume Pagoda is located in the northern part of Mingun. The temple was built by a grandchild of Bodawpaya in 1816. Three years prior to his reign, the king dedicated the sacred building to his deceased, favourite and highly religious wife, Hsinbyume. The outstanding architecture of the pagoda is closely associated with Hindu-Buddhist cosmology and therefore with Mount Meru, the 'Centre of the World'. Seven wave-shaped terraces symbolize the mountains that surround Mount Meru and the Sulamani Palace that is located on its summit. However, Mingun is not only known for its impressive architecture: it is home to the world's heaviest bell that is six metres high and weighs more than 90 tons!

Mandalay, ‘The City of Art’, is located within the centre of Myanmar, which was formerly known as Burma. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885, it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma. Twenty-four hundred years after the death of Buddha, King Mindon ordered the 150,000 inhabitants of Amarapura to relocate here.The well preserved Shwenandaw Monastery is one of the last examples of the traditional monasteries whose splendor once made Mandalay famous. The complex has all the architectural elements of a typical Burmese monastery but it is its beautiful wood carvings that are the most striking. To the north of the city is the 236 metre high Mandalay Mountain that dominates the plains below. The tree covered mountain is dominated by the towers of many temples and as Buddha once lived on this mountain, it is considered to be extremely sacred and thus contains several pagodas and shrines. Amarapura, the ‘Immortal City’, is situated in the south. It was the first of the country’s royal cities and today it is a small town in which its inhabitants earn their living from weaving.On the western hills are some of the most elegant and splendid monastery complexes such as the U Min Thonzeh Pagoda where forty five Buddha figures stand in a semi-circle, dignified and benign. Once known as the Centre of the World and today the religious and financial centre of the region, Mandalay lies at the heart of Burmese culture.
