Porthmadog, known locally as Port, and since 1974, rendered into Welsh from its former Anglicised form, Portmadoc, is a small coastal town and community in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd, in Wales. The town of Porthmadog lies 5 miles (8 km) east of Criccieth, 11 miles (18 km) south west of Blaenau Ffestiniog, 25 miles (40 km) north of Dolgellau and 20 miles (32 km) south of Caernarfon.
The town of Porthmadog developed in the 19th century as a port exporting slate to England and around the world. Since the decline of the slate industry it has become an important shopping centre for the surrounding area and a popular tourist destination. It has easy access to the Snowdonia National Park and is the terminus of the Ffestiniog Railway. In 1987 the National Eisteddfod was held in Porthmadog.
Porthmadog is located in Eifionydd on the estuary of the Afon Glaslyn where it runs into Tremadog Bay. The estuary, filled with sediment which was deposited by rivers emptying from the melting glaciers at the end of the last ice age, is a haven for migrating birds. Oystercatchers, redshanks and curlews are common and, in summer, there are flocks of sandwich terns. Borth-y-Gest, 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Porthmadog, is a village built in a shallow bowl which sweeps down to a sheltered bay, with hidden sandy coves and cliffs. Ships were built here before Porthmadog was established and houses, still known as pilot houses, were built at the mouth of the harbour so that pilots could keep a watch for ships needing them.
Morfa Bychan is 2.1 miles (3.4 km) south west of Porthmadog. It has a popular wide sandy beach, Black Rock Sands (Welsh: Traeth Morfa Bychan), with Graig Ddu, a rocky headland, at its western end. At low tide, rock pools and caverns are exposed. Sand dunes lie behind the beach, forming part of Morfa Bychan and Greenacres Nature Reserve. Tremadog, an exceptional example of a planned settlement, is 0.9 miles (1.4 km) north of Porthmadog. The village was built on land reclaimed from Traeth Mawr by William Madocks.
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, not to be confused with Welsh Highland Railway, is a three-quarter-mile (1.2 km) heritage railway. It includes an award-winning miniature railway, a heritage centre, a shop and a cafe. Porthmadog lies on the A487, the Fishguard to Bangor trunk road. The A498 runs north from Porthmadog to Beddgelert, giving access to Snowdonia. The A497 runs west through the southern Llyn Peninsula to Criccieth and Pwllheli. In 2008 the Welsh Assembly Government published plans for the A487 Porthmadog, Minffordd and Tremadog Bypass, which would reduce the amount of through traffic in the town of Porthmadog.
The town Porthmadog is served by three railway stations. Porthmadog Railway Station is on the Cambrian Coast Line between Pwllheli and Machynlleth. Trains, operated by Arriva Trains Wales, run through to Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Porthmadog Harbour Railway Station at the southern end of the Stryd Fawr has been the terminus of the Ffestiniog Railway from Blaenau Ffestiniog since passenger services started in 1865.

Bryn Y Mor | Holiday cottage in Borth Y Gest, Lleyn
Bryn y Mor is a delight! Not only does it have spectacular views and a glorious garden, but the house is bursting with happiness. Every room is full of interesting surprises: the rug in the sitting room, the tiny bathroom with room for a shower as well, the little library room, the tiles, the colours - we're gushing, but we really feel very privileged to have such a home in our portfolio.

Testimonials from Trip Advisor....
If you want a great food you must try this restaurant, its is basic everyday food but fulfilling and tasty. Good for children as there is a children's menu, there is also a play are outside for them. If your a real ale fan they have a couple of quest beers for you to try too.
Nice friendly atmosphere. I ordered the cod and chips and my wife ordered the salmon. Both meals came out and what a meal!! The cod was the largest I have ever seen and was fantastic and my wife really loved the salmon. It was the best meal we have had this year. If your in the area, this place is a must !
Amazing food! We stayed at the local Haven site, and we decided to try the Glanaber.. So glad we did, the food was delicious and the portion sizes were huge! The beer was kept well and the San Miguel was a firm favourite. The jumbo cod was 14inch long , so fresh and white. The T-bone steak just delicious and the Lamb Shank just fell off the bone
I would definitely recommend this place, the atmosphere was so chilled and friendly. Very child -friendly too with an outside play area.
Please don't be put off by the outside appearance, give this friendly little pub a try and you'll thoroughly enjoy your visit!
We have visited porthmadog over the last six years and always ate at this pub. We had missed the last 2 years. When we arrived this year it was new management. We ate every day and each day the meal was better and better. My husband had a T bone steak recommended by Chris the manageress, OMG he cleaned his plate and couldnt move he was that full. My husband said it was the nicest steak he had had over in the uk. My 12 year old son had a pork steak (the size of a small animal) he ate every bit and asked for it again, and the lamb shank just melts in your mouth.
I agree with Christopher C who said dont let the front pub put you off. The pub itself is so friendly, and child friendly. I have met some lovely people just in this week, the locals who drink in there are very friendly too. We spoke to Chris the Manageress just chatting about what she wants to change in the pub, and i have to give the lady her due she asked my husband what he thought could be improved, my husband said that the tables would look alot better without the table clothes on and the following day she had removed them. Huge improvement. She told us she is hoping for a refurb to go ahead soon, Good Luck to them it will make a huge difference. All i can say is the staff all work extremely hard, and sometimes there just wasnt enough staff to serve as the pub was that busy. That in itself should speak up for how great the pub and food is. I saw the same people returning every day, just like us, for good food, good beers and a very chilled atmosphere, all at a reasonable price. The bar staff were great, met a lovely friend who i hope to stay in touch with Teri, the staff worked their backsides off, so i hope that people give the pub a chance and support a local family managed business.
Parc Isaf campsite in Dyffryn Ardudwy Wales
This has to be the best small campsite on the coast above Dyffryn Ardudwy. A small site on a working farm perched on the hill above Benar Beach. Suited to outdoor types due its high hilly location it is perfect for families, couples and those who enjoy a quieter break or holiday. noisy groups are better suited to one of the larger sites nearby. While we were there my parents visited us for one night and stayed b&b at the local pentre mawre farmhouse in the village which was excellent. I think its worth recommending cos they had such a lovely nights sleep there:
