Nasiriyah is a city in Iraq. It is situated along the banks of the Euphrates River, about 225 miles southeast of Baghdad, near the ruins of the ancient city of Ur. It is the capital of the Dhi Qar Governorate. Its population 2003 was about 560,000, making it the fourth largest city in Iraq. It had a religiously diverse population of Muslims, Mandaeans and Jews in the early 20th century, but today its inhabitants are predominantly Shia Muslims.Nasiriyah was founded by the Muntafiq tribe in the late 19th century during the Ottoman era. 1. Ziggurat of UR Nasiriyah
The Ziggurat of Ur is a Neo-Sumerian ziggurat in what was the city of Ur near Nasiriyah, in present-day Dhi Qar Province, Iraq. The structure was built during the Early Bronze Age but had crumbled to ruins by the 6th century BCE of the Neo-Babylonian period, when it was restored by King Nabonidus. Its remains were excavated in the 1920s and 1930s by Sir Leonard Woolley. Under Saddam Hussein in the 1980s, they were encased by a partial reconstruction of the façade and the monumental staircase. The Ziggurat of Ur is the best-preserved of those known from Iran and Iraq, besides the ziggurat of Dur Untash . It is one of three well preserved structures of the Neo-Sumerian city of Ur, along with the Royal Mausolea and the Palace of Ur-Nammu .

There are a few train rides in the world with a romantic cling to their name, the Oriental Express from Paris to Istanbul, the Maharajas luxury train in India known as the palace on wheels, and in Switzerland you got the Glacier Express.

But a train ride that’s definitely doesn’t have the romantic cling to its name, is the local train between Baghdad and Basra in Iraq.

Driving past the Euphrates River in Iraq - 2011

This was one of the coolest missions that I did while in Iraq. Driving past the Euphrates river. The same river that could have watered the Garden of Eden. I had my gunner film this for me as we drove past. Sorry for the poor quality. It's the memory that counts though.
