Reading & Northern #425: Fall Foliage Fury
Normally, when Reading & Northern 4-6-2 #425 travels on a Fall Foliage excursion from Port Clinton, PA to Jim Thorpe, PA, she has a diesel or two behind her to assist on both steep grades and with braking coming down the hills to the respective destinations. On Sunday, October 16, however, things would be different. The railroad decided to run a train with fewer cars, no extra water tender, and no diesel assistance for this fall foliage trip - to see how #425 would perform - and perform she did.
After a nice steady departure from Port Clinton, watch and listen as #425 starts to struggle and slip a bit, as she hauls her cars up the wet track towards Tamaqua and Hometown, PA - before going downhill through Nesquehoning and on into Jim Thorpe. Then, the process gets repeated, only in reverse.
Enjoy this rare look at #425 running solo, and in the Fall Foliage Fury.
Oh - and stick around for the post-credits scene :)

Reading & Northern: Steam on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway!
On September 5th, 2009, Penn Rail Videos made a trek into Carbon County, PA, to capture steam locomotion in the Lehigh Gorge State Park. We were far from dissappointed, as Reading & Northern's premier operating steam locomotive #425, is the motive power for this Labor Day Weekend extravaganza onboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in Jim Thorpe, PA. We'll watch the train storm out of Jim Thorpe, then take a ride behind the big blue locomotive as she storms her way into the park. We'll see and pass by many famous locations along the railroad, such as Nesquehoning Junction, Glen Onoko, Oxbow Curve, and we'll conclude our journey at Old Penn Haven. If you like big steam running through beautiful scenery, this is the video for you!
By the way, she is wearing a LEHIGH & NEW ENGLAND 3-chime whistle, not something you hear very often.
PA Route 26 with an SBN member (Twisty)
This video is the same as my Riff Twisties III video, except it, of course, has riff, this is engine noise. Most prefer the engine noise. :P
The road is PA Route 26 out of Everett, PA down the MD border, or there-abouts. The first 6+ minutes is Kirchnsr and the one leading her, Bannedrex. The second half is my father, his friend and I. It's everyone except Bannedrex's first time on this road, so it was taken a bit easy. The two videos were taken better than a week apart. (They live in Central~ish PA. I live in Western PA.)
Enjoy.
