Day-trip to Hakone, Japan (箱根) - SULFUROUS Owakudani Black Eggs and Cruise on Lake Ashinoko
We went on a tour of Hakone (箱根), Japan which truly embodies the perfect Japanese retreat. Owakudani (大涌谷, Ōwakudani), the popular area around a crater formed after the eruption of Mount Hakone around 3000 years ago, is also located in Hakone. Many people come here to taste its famous sulphurous black eggs.
Not far from Tokyo, and even accessible from Osaka, this little town provides one of the best traditional Japanese experiences around. Since we wanted to experience traditional Japanese living and baths (onsen), as well as get a taste of the famous black eggs of Owakudani, we thought Hakone would provide the perfect retreat spot for a relaxing couple of days. Hakone is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, meaning that Mount Fuji can seen from there during clear days. Sadly, that wasn’t the case for us – it was as foggy and overcast as could be, so we weren’t able to get a glimpse of the famous mountain’s iconic snow-dipped peaks.
To start, we took a ferry boat from Hakone across Lake Ashinoko where we board the Komagatake Ropeway up to Owakudani. To this day, Owakudani is still an active volcano zone and the sulfurous fumes emanating from the mountain are one of its iconic sights. Of course, we had a two-fold mission on this day: explore Owakudani and eat the famous black eggs. The Owakudani eggs are cooked in the naturally hot water produced here where it’s shells are blackened by the sulfur. Japanese tradition has it that consumption of these special eggs prolong one’s life by as much as 7 years – And just like that, we were sold!

About us: We are Daniel, Robyn, Ava, Rose and Ella, and together we are The Go To Family. We love to travel! We also love food, exploring historical sites and, of course, doing loads of fun things together as a family. In my videos, you will see me and Robyn tackle every obstacle that traveling with kids throws at us. We do traveling almost exactly the same way as we did before having kids, it just takes a little bit more planning. But it's even more fun and rewarding to be able to show them new cultures and live new experiences with them at the same time! Our mission is to inspire other Millennials to travel with kids.
Our 7-year-old daughter, Ava, also has her own YouTube channel. Feel free to check it out right here:
