-- About this video --
Today we are going to Stewart Island! The most popular way to get to Stewart Island is to take the ferry between Bluff and Oban. We hop on the ferry in Bluff with Real Journeys and start making our merry way over the Foveaux Strait to Oban, the one and only town in Stewart Island.
When we arrive, we check into the Stewart Island Backpackers then start exploring Oban. After getting some lunch and meeting some locals, we find a walking track along the coast of Oban, over some cliffs to a nice secluded beach called Bathing Beach. Bathing Beach is a beautiful golden sand beach. Although we are as far south as we’re ever likely to get, the beaches in Oban look like a tropical paradise.
We make our way back into Oban town and catch a movie and the one and only cinema on Stewart Island, the Bunkhouse Theatre. It’s a cosy boutique-style cinema showing one movie called A Local’s Tail giving the Stewart Island history from the perspective of a dog. It’s pretty hilarious and sums up Stewart Island life and humour nicely.
So what do you think of Oban, Stewart Island? Is it a New Zealand town worth visiting? LUK in the comments.

Ulva Island: The Best Place for Wildlife in Stewart Island – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year

-- About this video --
Today is our last day in Stewart Island, New Zealand, so we are going to show you one more awesome things to do in Stewart Island: the Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary. Ulva Island is a pest free island meaning that the New Zealand bird species can thrive there! It’s one of the best places to see New Zealand birds.
It’s a 5-minute journey on the Ulva Island Ferry to get to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is connected with a network of walking tracks to explore the island. The best way is to take it slow to see more birds.
Ulva Island is home to a great deal and abundance of species: Kiwi birds, tui, kaka, kakariki/parakeet, oyster catchers, wood pigeon, yellowhead, weka and so much more! We spend most time with the weka and weka chicks but we see all of these birds except for a kiwi bird! You’re best chances are to arrive early morning to see a kiwi bird.
For one of the best places to see wildlife in New Zealand, we couldn’t recommend Ulva Island more as it’s the best example of bird sanctuary in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Ulva Island Wildlife Sanctuary? Would you add Ulva Island to your NZ bucket list? LUK in the comments.

Hiking in Stewart Island (& Kiwi Spotting) – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ

-- About this video --
So yesterday we landed on Mason Bay and stayed the night in the Mason Bay Hut. Today we are doing a hike from coast to coast on Stewart Island from Mason Bay to the Freshwater Hut. The hike in the Rakiura National Park is part of the Southern Circuit and one of the many multi-day hiking tracks in Stewart Island.
We start our hike walking over sand dunes full of lowland vegetation until we get to a manuka forest. The landscape is unlike anywhere else we have been in New Zealand so far.
Along the way, around midday, we find footprints of the kiwi bird in the mud, then a rustling in the bushes. We have spotted a kiwi bird of Stewart Island!
Stewart Island is one of the best places to see kiwi in New Zealand. The Rakiura kiwi are known for being awake during the day, unlike other sub species of kiwi bird in New Zealand.
We are so stoked that we got to see a kiwi bird in the wild. We continue to Freshwater Hut where we are picked up by the Rakiura Water Taxi and taken back to Oban.
So what do you think of hiking in the Rakiura National Park? Would you add a hike in Stewart Island to your NZ bucket list? LUK in the comments.

Flight Over Stewart Island – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 160, Part 2: After an awesome day in Oban we are now onto Part 2 of today’s Stewart Island adventure! Check out what it’s like to do a flight over Stewart Island and land in Mason Bay, and stay the night in the Rakiura National Park!

Tomorrow – Day 161 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
After an awesome day carving our own jade in Stewart Island, it is now evening in Oban, Stewart Island and time to catch our flight right across Stewart Island and Rakiura National Park! We are picked up by the team of Stewart Island Flights and driven to Oban’s air strip!
We hop into a small 10-seater plane and depart for our Stewart Island flight right across Stewart Island. The flight only lasts about 6 minutes but we lap up the views of the Rakiura National Park before doing a beach landing on Mason Bay. Here, our pilot points us in the right direction to hike to in order to make our way to the Mason Bay Hut where we are going to be staying the night.
Mason Bay on Stewart Island is a stunning and isolated beach well known for having a few kiwi sightings on the beach and around the Mason Bay Hut, so as soon as we settle into the Mason Bay Hut, we are back outside to do some kiwi spotting in Stewart Island.
Although we can hear kiwi birds on Stewart Island all around us, we are unsuccessful in spotting them tonight. However, we do catch an amazing sunset and watch the starts on Mason Bay.
Tomorrow, we are going to be hiking across Stewart Island from Mason Bay to the Freshwater River where hopefully our Stewart Island kiwi spotting will be more successful then.
So what do you think of taking a scenic flight in Stewart Island? Would you fly over Stewart Island and stay in the Rakiura National Park? LUK in the comments.
