Naldurg Fort: The Historical Heritage (4K Ultra HD)

Naldurg fort is named after Nalraja who built the fort in medieval architectural style. The fort which is an interesting place has enclosed a surface of a knoll or plantain of basalt rock which is jutted out into the valley or raving of the small river Bori. Along the rest of the cliff on three sides ran fortifications. Bastion firmly built out have deseed basalt and are large enough to carry heavy guns. The entire circumference is about a mile and a half.
The interior portion is covered with ruined walls and a wide road running up to the centre. The fort has many bastions amongst which are upli Buruj, which is the height point in the fort paranda Buruj , nagar Buruj, Sangam Burug, Sangram Buruj, Bands Buruj, poone Buruj, etc. Inside the fort there are remains of the walls and some of the building such a Barood kotha, Baradari, Ambarkhana, Rangaan mahal, Jali etc. Though the buildings are in ruins the remains give an impression that there might have been at one time the specious buildings, there are two tanks in the fort known as machali guns amongst which important are the “hathi toph” and magar Toph”, the hathi Darwaza and the hurmukh and the hurmukh darwaza are the main gates of the fort. The most interesting building which connects the fort and the Ranmandala is the dam constructed across the Bori River during the reign of Ibrahim Adil shah II. The fort is said to have been originally built by Nalraja who was a vassal of the Chalukya kings of kalyani. It was latter included in the dominions of the Bahamanis and was subsequently taken over by the Adil shahi kings of bijapur, from whom it passed in the hands of mughalain the year 1686.A.D.

The old name of the Osmanabad district was Dharasiva. During the age of the Satavahanas; Osmanabad district seems to have been very prosperous. Tagara; modern Ter; is mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea as one of the two pre-eminent trading centers; the other being Pratisthana; modern Paithan in the Aurangabad district. From there; various kinds of merchandise were taken to Barygaza (modern Broach) by wagon loads-from Paithan; a great quantity of onyx-stone and from Tagara a plentiful supply of fine lines cloth; and all kinds of muslins and mallow coloured stuffs and several other kinds of merchandise; pertaining to various places; which were taken thither from districts bordering on the sea.
In 1317, the Kingdom of the Yadavas finally passed into the hands of the Sultans of Delhi. The Deccan now began to be ruled by the Governors appointed from Delhi. The district of Osmanabad thus for the first time passed under Muhammedans.
Under the Moghals; the Deccan was divided into six Subhas viz. Khandes; Berar; Aurangabad; Bidar; Bijapur and Hyderabad.
The present district of Osmanabad which was roughly divided into two district viz. Paranda and Naldurg then formed part of Aurangabad and Bijapur Subhas.
In 1722; Nizam –UI-Mulk was appointed as the Vazir of Moghal Empire; but he soon got tired of the court intrigues and returned to the Deccan in the following year. The emperor ordered the Subhedar of Hyderabad; Mubariz Khan to oppose him. A battle was fought at Fatehkharda in October 1724 in which the Nizam emerged victorious. This battle established the independence of the Nizam-UI- Mulk. Osmanabad district thus after a centur;y of direct rule by the Delhi Emperors passed under the Nizam’s sovereignty.
The district was temporarily ceded to the British Government in 1853
and it was reverted to Hyderabad State in the year 1860; with its
headquarters at Naldurg. The district was known as Naldug district till 1904. Naldurg district was subsequently abolished and new district of Osmanabad was carved out with headquarters at Osmanabad.
With the reorganization of States; the district became a
part of Mumbai State in 1956. Three tahsils viz. Ahmadpur; Nilanga and Udgir were transferred from the neighbouring Bidar district (Karnataka) to Osmanabad district.
In 1960; Bombay State was bifurcated into Maharashtra and Gujarat and Osmanabad became an intergral part of Maharashtra State. In 2011 census, the district has 8 tahsils, 8 towns and 733 villages (including 5 uninhabited villages).
