Benin Tourist Attractions Best Places To Visit In Benin Republic
Benin Tourist Attractions Best Places To Visit In Benin Republic
Benin played a key role in the development of the African slave trade and was also the birthplace of the voodoo arts. These two ingredients are just a small part of the recipe that makes the complex and rich history of the African nation.
The nation is relatively small and has only a few large cities but Benin begs to be explores and rewards travellers with museums, wonderful architecture and markets that are truly memorable.
The national beauty of Benin also has a lot to tempt tourists. From the paradise Atlantic beaches fringed with palm trees to the national parks teeming with exotic beasts such as lions, cheetahs and elephants as well as rare bird species.
1 Cotonou
It may not be the true capital city of Benin but Cotonou sure does feel like it. The city is an intense blast of urban energy combined with African charm. If it is your first time in Africa, the city can be a little bit daunting and full on but for those willing to risk the adventure, Cotonou has plenty of rewards These rewards include a number of stunning paradise beaches with golden sand and palm trees. The Pendjari National Park is also a must see in Cotonou and is seen as one of the leading animal reserves in Africa.
2 Ouidah Museum of History
Ouidah is a city that has a mix of influence from the French and the Portuguese due to various events in history. The city is located about 40km away from Cotonou and in contrast is more relaxed. If you are interested in African history (and you should be) then this city should be top of your itinerary. It has fantastic museums exploring slavery and voodoo. If all the history gets too much for you, there are more stunning beaches to laze on in Ouidah too.
3 Abomey
Abomey was the capital of Ancient Dahomey for around 300 years starting in the 17th Century. The main attraction and reason for visiting the city is the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Abomey Royal Palaces. Although the palaces have largely been destroyed and are in a ruinous state, the site still has enormous historical value and the tales of kings that once resided here are fascinating.
4 Porto Novo
Porto Novo is the capital city of Benin and former French capital of Dahomey. If you have visited Cotonou first, you will probably struggle to understand why Porto Novo is the official capital city, the population is only around 250,000 and the pace is much more leisurely than Cotono. The influence of the Portugeuse in this area are still clear to see in the present day. Sights in the city include the Royal Palace and gardens as well as the museum of Porto Novo kings.
5 Grand-Popo
The town of Grand-Popo has an intriguing history mainly due to the important role it played in the slave trade. The town oozes with African charm and the people are friendly. The town is about an hours drive from Cotonou and offers a perfect change of pace from the busy city. There are many backside hotels and resorts in the town and the beaches are a great place to relax and swim. The nearby Mono River is a great place to walk and offers a chance to see mangroves and exotic bird life.
Travel to Benin: a stunning piece of Africa | TravelGretl
Early 2018 we travelled to Benin for the Hunger Project. They celebrated their 10 year anniversary in this beautiful country, working hand in hand with locals towards a sustainable end of world hunger.
At the end of our trip we got 2 days of to see a bit of the country. Visiting Ganvie in lake Nokoue, and walking the route of the slaves. Which is very impressive!
Of course we missed out on a lot as well, not being able to see some of the wildlife in the north. There is much more to explore!
Benin is a stunning country with amazing people, I can only recommend visiting if you ever get the chance.

The Road of No Return: Slavery in Benin
Walking through the Gate of No Return, one of four gates in Africa where slaves were transported across seas. Chained 600 wide at a time, they would walk the Road of No Return, pass through the gate, and board the ship to what tragedies lay ahead.
It was quite a moment and I hope the video translates some sort of feeling.
Benin Travel Video
Benin Travel Video - If youre heading to West Africa to unearth lost treasure, look no further than Benin. This club-shaped country, on the western edge of Nigeria, was once one of the most powerful empires in Africa -- the Dahomey kingdom. The ruins of the Dahomeyans palaces and temples can be seen in Abomey, while Ouidah is a poignant reminder of where their riches came from: the slave trade. The Route dEsclaves in Ouidah was the last walk on African soil for slaves bound for Brazil and the Caribbean. Museums here and in Porto Novo, Benins lagoon-side capital, examine the resultant Afro-Brazilian society and culture. Cotonou, on the other hand, is urban Africa at its most frazzling and polluted - but is not without its own charms, a lively nightlife and good shopping being a couple of them.
Regardless of the ill-gotten Dahomeyan gains glittering in the Musée Historique dAbomey, there are plenty of treasures on Benins dusty streets and palm-fringed beaches. This is the birthplace of voodoo, the countrys national religion, exported by the slaves and distorted by Hollywood. Voodoo is an important part of everyday life and most towns bear signs of it, such as the fetish markets stocked with the heads and skins of every animal imaginable.
Elephants, lions and crocodiles can be seen in more animated form in the northern wildlife parks, notably Pendjari, one of the best in West Africa. Then there are the stilt villages, home to thousands in the southern lagoons, and the northern tata somba (fortlike mud huts) built by the insular Somba people. Not only is Benin a richly historical and cultural country, this politically stable nation is one of the easiest parts of West Africa to travel in.

TEMPLE OF PYTHON, OUIDAH, BENIN REPUBLIC
In most parts of the world snakes are feared, but in Benin they are revered. Royal pythons are worshiped in Benin, especially in Ouidah. The good news is that royal pythons are not dangerous, but the bad news is that these sacred reptiles are welcome Beninese households where they are fed when the doors of the temple are opened at night. There is no fear when the locals welcome these slithering pythons into their living rooms like an honoured guest.
The Temple of Pythons is a small room of twelve square meters that houses 50 adult royal pythons. Take a picture with a python around your neck or stroke the snakes if you are scared of being strangled. Several shrines were built for offerings to the 'snake-god' Dagbe, but the biggest offerings come from the tourists who pay $1.50 to enter the Temple of the Sacred Python. Voodoo shrines and other relics can be viewed for this entry fee, but taking photos with the snakes can be costly.

Route des Esclaves (Route of the Slaves) - Ouidah, Benin [video by Regine Romain]
KNOW THY HISTORY.
WALK WITH PRIDE.
WE ARE MAGIC.
Route des Esclaves (Route of the Slaves), Ouidah, Benin. [video by @regineromain from her #BrooklyntoBenin #Vodou #pilgrimage]
Ouidah Plage was one of the largest slave ports in West Africa, with many slave ships disembarking in Haiti, Cuba, Brazil and the last ship, the Clotilde, landing in 1859 in Mobile, Alabama.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Motorbikes are the quickest transportation available to get to Ouidah plage (beach), where the new #WaWaWaDiasporaCentre studio is located. I remember the first time, I took this road: I looked at the dirt, the trees, the sky, the clouds, the homes, the monuments, the traditional shrines, and the butterflies fluttering by. (Sigh.)
I gazed at the people as the bike zoomed along and they gazed at me. My gaze was direct, tempered with a slight smile and theirs was open inquisitive unblinking.
Oui oui, It was all so lovely, bumpy, perky ... yet so so ghostly... cause cause
Spirits walk that road ya'll ... their chains of the past moaned in my ears.
Can you hear it in the video?
Yes the truth is, this beauitiful 4 km/2.5 miles long dusty red road has a horrible hideous history. The Route des Esclaves was where millions of captured Africans were taken after being sold for pittance at the fort in Ouidah town.
My Haitian ancestors were most likely within the millions who walked, in chains, stumbled in chains and crawled in chains,
this stretch of land
with the swarming mosquitos,
in the rain, in the hot ass heat,
in the seasonal flood waters to Ouidah Plage where the myriads of European owned slave ships awaited their arrival.
Eh eh, de dirt red still
from de blood.
Pussyclot red star.
And here I am just zipping along history's tracks with my good ole #Iphone4 (don’t hate) recording it all.
Wow.
And here I am just zipping along history's tracks with my good ole #Iphone4 (don’t hate) recording it all. Wow.

We are still enduring,
WE rIZE.
We some bad ass people ya'll.
WE ARE MAGIC.
WALK WITH PRIDE.
KNOW THY HISTORY.
