Bolgatanga | Ghana | Upper East Region, tourism, crocodiles, Sumbrungu Painted Houses , Tongo Hills
Bolgatanga is the capital of Upper East Ghana.Beautiful places to travel to game : Public bus from Accra/Kumasi/Tamale is cheap and safer than the maniac private bus drivers. It takes 3 hours from Tamale, leaving around 8am so make sure you make a bathroom stop on the lunch stop as you might not be able to otherwise.
Private car from any medium sized town with driver is only about €20 a day.

Sumbrungu Painted Houses One of the most distinctive features in the Upper East Region are the traditional villages that dot the landscape. These villages generally feature round thatched roof huts, painted with decorative motifs in striking colors. A beautiful example of traditional paintings is found in the village of Sumbrungu, eight kilometers from Bolgatanga on the way going to Paga.
The Tongo Hills and Tengzug Shrine are located in the village of Tengzug, 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) southeast of Bolgatanga. With its landscape dominated by large granite formations, the Tengzug area evolved as the sacred centre of the Talensis people, an ethnic group in Northern Ghana. The Tengzug Shrine is located in the Tongo hills and is believed to grant luck and prosperity to all those who visit it. Beware of the exorbitant price for a profoundly uninspired village tour (15 cedis), the price of which you won't be told about until afterwards.
The Tomb of Naa Bbewaa, who is the founder of the Mole-Dagbon tribes, is located in the town of Pusiga. Legend states that Naa Gbewaa never died but simply vanished during a heated battle. The shrine was thought to have been built in the 14th century in commemoration of Naa Gbewaa, and is today a place of spiritual reverence.
The Bolgatanga Library is a notable design of award-winning American architect J. Max Bond, Jr., who was influenced by Le Corbusier. Bond lived in Ghana for four years in the 1960s, escaping racism in the United States. The Bolgatanga library was his first major project while working for the national construction company. The design features perforated walls and an umbrella shaped roof, so the structure remains cool and well ventilated.
Forty kilometres (about 25 miles) from Bolgatanga, along the Burkina Faso border, is Paga, home to the Sacred Crocodile Ponds. These are purportedly the friendliest crocodiles in Ghana, and it is said that the souls of the royal family reside in them. The crocodiles roam freely throughout the ponds

Petting A Real Life Crocodile At The Chief Pong In Paga - Ghana
Just to mention one thing first, I didn't get close to that crocodile wading out of the Paga pond, lured out by the whistles of our guide and the chirping sound of the fowl.
I had my telephoto lens attached to my camera and stayed clear. Also I have to apologize for the jumping video footage. I dropped my zoom lens the same day I crashed my drone 2 years ago, but I think the jittery, jumps kind of underline how I felt inside.
After Mike was able to pet that beast, the crocodile got its treat and slowly moved into the pond again, right in time for me to fire up my drone to take some videos from above the crocodile pond:
No crocodile or human was harmed in this video.
We will write and publish a full article about our Paga Crocodile Pond visit soon, which will be available on our Ghana Travel Blog, there we will also explain why the people of Paga think the crocodiles are holy:

Pia's Palace - Paga (Upper East Region), Ghana
This clip shows Pia's Palace in Paga, in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It is part of a community-based eco-tourism project for the town, and while the town's two crocodile ponds tend to steal the show, it's really worth spending a full day in Paga to see sites such as Pia's Palace, and the Al Hassan village & old Pikworo slave encampment, which have made Paga somewhat popular amongst tourists from around the World.
The video shows my guided tour, where I got to see the old huts of the palace. It is still a living quarters today, and I was shown things like how to use the traditional cooking implements and also inside the huts.
Please check my other clips if you are interested in Paga, as we have posted several on You Tube !

Hans Cottage Botel - Cape Coast, Ghana
This clip is of Hans Cottage Botel, which is located near Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana (on the road from Cape Coast to Kakum National Park, about half-way between these two points).
It is a resort-hotel, with a crocodile pond, and is popular with tourists. The bar/restaurant is in a double-storey building build over the banks of the pond, so you can sit & watch the crocodiles, as I did with my very lovely female friend, Annie, who is seen in the footage. A wedding was being held at Hans Cottage that day, and you can see the wedding party briefly at one stage, and a few American tourists are also seen looking at the crocodiles.
President Obama in Ghana at the Cape Coast Dungeons pt 1-2
President Obama and his family toured Cape Coast Holocaust Dungeons in Ghana West Africa Saturday 07-11-09. This is an interview with Anderson Cooper of CNN AC 360 around the dungeons. Cape Coast is one of the biggest of the many dungeons on the coast of West Africa that stored Africans in the early 1500s to mid 1800s that were used & abused as cargo on slave ships destined for the plantations of the Americas and the Caribbean. Ghana is one of the most incredible places in Africa and the world. You have to be there to experience the experience of a lifetime. This was Day 1 of my trip to Ghana - searching out amazing Ghanian, West African food!
So I wasn’t totally sure all that I was doing - but this is part of the reason I love traveling and going to places I have never been before - it gives you the chance to learn, and try new things.
Heavy-Do Chop Bar - First restaurant we stopped at in Accra, is Heavy-Do Chop Bar, don’t you love the name? Now a Chop Bar in Ghana is a local style restaurant, oftentimes in a home-like compound or in the backyard. This place is quite well known in Ghana, and they are known for a reason, their food is incredible. I didn’t know it until eating there, but one of their specialties is omo tuo, which are Ghanaian style rice balls, eaten with a variety of different meats and soups. I ordered the rice balls with palm nut soup and red fish. It was insanely delicious!
Lolonyo Tilapia Base (Duncan's Pub) - For dinner on my first day in Accra, Ghana, we headed over to a legendary place to eat grilled tilapia. The actual restaurant is called Lolonyo Tilapia Base, but most people know it as Duncan's Pub, which is right next to the fish spot. In the evening, people come here to eat grilled Ghanaian style tilapia, and it’s excellent. Along with the grilled fish, the part I loved the most was the pepper sauce - a chili mix that was extraordinary.
This was just my first day eating Ghanaian food in Accra, Ghana. I learned a lot, and I have a few more amazing West African food tours of Ghana coming up!

Border Crossing - Côte d'Ivoire into Ghana (via Noe-Elubo border)
This vlog is about border crossing from Côte d'Ivoire into Ghana (via Noe Elubo border).
In my last trip, I did border crossing twice between the two countries via different borders, both tiring yet interesting experiences. Maybe the one in the North was even more memorable but it was more of a mess so I was too tired to record anything.
Noe-Elubo is a more common and regular border for tourists to cross, since it's not too far from the coast line.
