Journey to Kamchatka, Russia, 2013
I am Adam from Australia. In July, 2013 I decided to travel to Kamchatka which is located in the Russia Far East. This trip was part of my short, month journey across Russia. Kamchatka remains an isolated and off road location with planes being the most practical means to transport to get there. It is a land full of active volcanoes, mountains, wild and untouched nature and animals. The remote nature of Kamchatka means that traveling around without a guide or proper vehicle/knowledge is very difficult. I booked a tour with a Russian company where it was a young couple from Ukraine and I. In this trip we were mainly based in the small town of Paratunka, outside of the main city Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. We visited 3 volcanoes: Avacha, Gorely and Mutnovsky. Rafted down the rivers and sailed out into the Pacific Ocean. Kamchatka is truly one of the last untouched wonders of the world, unspoiled by both development and tourism. I have a fairly solid knowledge of Russian which has greatly assisted me in traveling in this region.

Peter and Anke's Surprise Wedding!
Life in Costa del Sol is always filled with neighborhood gatherings for Potluck dinners, Sunday Funday at the beach and Friday Fish Fry's. When Peter & Anke announced they were having a party with a special musician guest coming to entertain us we all looked forward to a gala evening. The guest list included friends from all over the world and was catered by our favorite restaurant the Poseidon in Jaco. We would be dining on fresh shrimp, melt in your mouth Ahi Tuna and smoked fall off the bone ribs. But this soirée turned in to an event to remember....when after our first round of listening to Sergei play the most beautiful music on his accordion we were told that Peter and Anke were getting married and this was their wedding! And a beautiful weddng celebration it was! Congratulations to the handsome groom Peter and Best Wishes to the lovely bride Anke and thank you for making us all a part of your very special party!

Sergei was born near Donetsk, Ukraine in 1973. He taught himself to play a squeezebox accordion at the age of seven. In 1982 at the age of nine, he moved with his mother to Provedeniya, Siveria, a remote town on the northeastern coast of Russia, where he was fortunate enough to come under the teaching of Nina Andreevna Dronova, a master music teacher. Sergie studied and practiced the accordion from seven to ten hours each day for many years. He blossomed and was soon competing in regional and national music competitions, winning awards for his accordion playing. He studied music performance and education at the Kamchatka Music College under Dr. Vladimir Fedorovich Shashin from 1988 to 1993. He was the first place winner of the international program of the European New Names Contest in 1992, held at Moscow's Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. He studied music performance at the Moscow Conservatory for two years before he emigrated to the United States in 1998.
What an amazing and accomplished musician . . . and he can make a surprise wedding very special indeed!
