Brest 1000 years! Beautiful, old, modern city in Belarus!
In 2019, Brest is 1000 years old!
Brest is a city in the south-west of Belarus, the administrative center of the Brest region and the Brest region, which does not belong to itself.
The city's area is 146.12 km². According to estimates, as of January 1, 2014, the city's population was 330,934 people.
It is located in the southwestern part of the region, at the confluence of the Mukhavets River to the Western Bug, at the state border with Poland. A large railway junction, a river port on Mukhavets, an important junction of highways.
Brest is a city with a rich and ancient history. According to the year of the first mention (1019), Brest is the fourth city in Byelorussia, only Polotsk (862), Vitebsk (974) and Turov (980) were mentioned earlier. During its history the city changed its statehood more than once; now is at the very junction of the territories of the European Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States, near the point where the borders of the three countries - Belarus, Ukraine and Poland - converge.
The ancient name of Brest is Berestye. The city was first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years under the year 1019 in connection with the struggle of the prince of Turov and the great Kiev Svyatopolk Vladimirovich with his brother, then Novgorod prince Yaroslav the Wise, for the grand duke's throne of Kiev. The name occurs, most likely, from the word bark (kind of elm) or from birch bark (the outer layer of the bark bark). In 1863 a traveler Pavel Shpilevsky recorded a legend about the origin of the name of Brest, connected with the journey to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of one rich merchant with his comrades. Unexpectedly, the road was blocked by a swamp, around which there were many birches. The travelers cut down the trees and were able to pass through the bog on the birch floor. They came to the island, which was formed by a large river and a small river flowing into it. For the fact that everything went well, the merchant decided to thank the pagan god Veles and built a temple on the island. After a while, returning from Lithuania, where there was a successful trade, the merchant and his comrades again stopped at Velesov's temple, built huts and founded a city called Berestye.
Happy birthday beloved city!
