Moselle river, Metz, Lorraine, France, Europe
The Moselle is a river flowing through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. It is a left tributary of the Rhine, which it joins at Koblenz. A small part of Belgium is also drained by the Moselle through the Sauer and the Our. Its name comes from the Latin Mosella, meaning the Little Meuse (Mosa in Latin). The river gave its name to two French départements: Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle. The source of the Moselle is at the western slope of the Ballon d'Alsace in the Vosges mountains. The Moselle flows through the Lorraine region, west of the Vosges. Further downstream, in Germany, the Moselle valley forms the division between the Eifel and Hunsrück mountain regions. Its total length from source to mouth is approximately 546 kilometres (339 mi). The Moselle was celebrated in Mosella, a Latin poem by Ausonius (4th century). In the 20th century, the river and the folklore and local history of the towns along its banks were described by British travel writer Roger Pilkington. In the tale, The Seven Swabians of the Brothers Grimm, the eponymous Swabians drown trying to cross the Moselle. From the left: Madon, Terrouin, Esch, Rupt de Mad, Orne, Fensch, Gander, Syre, Sauer, Kyll, Salm, Lieser, Alf, Endert, Brohlbach, Elz. The Moselle valley between Metz and Thionville is an industrial area, with coal mining and steel manufactures.
The Moselle valley is famous for its beautiful scenery and the excellent wine produced. Most well-known is the German Mosel wine region, while the Luxembourgish winegrowing region is called Moselle Luxembourgeoise and the French region is called AOC Moselle. Most notable among the wines produced here are Riesling, Elbling, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, and Auxerrois. The German part of the Moselle is a popular tourist destination. An important asset is today's Moselradweg, the 311-kilometre (193 mi) long cycleway from Metz to Koblenz, which also connects to nine other cycleways. The Moselle has been made navigable for large cargo ships up to 110 metres (360 ft) long from the Rhine in Koblenz up to Neuves-Maisons, south of Nancy. For smaller ships it is connected to other parts of France through the Canal de l'Est and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin. There are locks in Koblenz, Lehmen, Müden, Fankel, Sankt Aldegund, Enkirch, Zeltingen, Wintrich, Detzem, Trier, Grevenmacher, Palzem, Apach, Kœnigsmacker, Thionville, Richemont, Talange, Metz, Ars-sur-Moselle, Pagny-sur-Moselle, Blénod-lès-Pont-à-Mousson, Custines, Pompey, Aingeray, Fontenoy-sur-Moselle, Toul, Villey-le-Sec, and Neuves-Maisons.

Places to see in ( Nimes - France ) Cathedrale Notre Dame Et Saint Castor de Nimes
Places to see in ( Nimes - France ) Cathedrale Notre Dame Et Saint Castor de Nimes
Nîmes Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Nîmes, France. The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to the local Saint Castor of Apt. The cathedral was the seat of the Bishops of Nîmes until 1877, when the name of the diocese was changed. It is still the seat of their successors the Bishops of Nîmes (–Uzès and Alès). The cathedral is believed to stand on the site of the former temple of Augustus. It is partly Romanesque and partly Gothic in style.
The Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Nîmes , in the French department of Gard in the Occitan region. Dedicated to Castor d'Apt , it is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Nîmes, Uzès and Alès. The cathedral has known three successive states.
A cathedral Romance , built on the site of older buildings (especially the Roman period), was consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II , though the work certainly encroached on the xii th century. From this period, there remain some facades of walls: a gable-wall surmounted by an old bell-wall leaning against the current bell tower which housed the first bells. The facade is punctuated, in part, by Lombard arches, and a triangular antique pediment typical of Provençal Romanesque art , housing on the left a suite in bas - relief of the Old Testament . During the wars of religionNotre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor was seriously damaged twice by the Reformed in 1567 and 1621 .
One of the two steeples of its so-called Treasury Tower facade, to the south, comparable to the Fenestrelle tower in Uzès, was destroyed, except that it was square and higher than the second one. According to the plans of Poldo oF Albenas the xvi th century and had the twin arches (as in Uzes). It is the Protestants who participated financially in the reconstruction of the nave. Only the northwest tower escaped destruction, serving as an observation post.
The north tower, whose top floor is Gothic is completed by a roof terrace which is accessed by a turret with a spiral staircase, is about 40 m high . The vaulted height of the nave is 20 m . This is not a large building since the nave is only 55 meters long. The building is surpassed on the surface by the Saint - Baudile church .
The organ of the cathedral was built from 1643 by Gaspard and André Eustache at the request of the Bishop of Nîmes; from this period dates the large buffet whose sculptures were made by Christophe Noiratte from Marseille and Michel Péru from Avignon who carved the two cherubs flanking the cornice of the large central turret and the three saints summoning the coronation of the grand-corps.
