It’s a significant naval base and the harbor is home to submarines and warships, as well as fishing boats and ferries. The grand Musée National de la Marine in the Port of Toulon exhibits maritime artifacts. Rugged limestone mountains form a backdrop to the city, and a cable car shuttles visitors up Mont Faron.

Standing in the shallows, I let my toes sink into the pearl-white sand. Behind me, waves of peacock blue and green gently gather momentum. Facing me is a delicate strip of beach, shaped like a crescent moon: wide at its middle, with soft, tapered tips at each end. Eucalyptus and pines follow the beach’s curves. The Plage de Notre Dame is one of France's finest.
And that’s it: sea, sand and trees working together beautifully, creating a scene reminiscent of a distant desert island. Yet this beach – the Plage de Notre Dame – is far from remote. Just 20 minutes’ boat trip from Hyères, on France’s Mediterranean coast, Notre Dame dazzles on the north-eastern reach of the Ile de Porquerolles.
One of three islands, collectively known as the Iles d’Hyères, Porquerolles, at just over four miles long and around two miles wide, is intimate in scale. Its beaches are diminutive, too. I paddle the length of Notre Dame in just a few minutes. The fragrance of eucalyptus and pine hangs in the air with nothing to compete against it. There are no beachside shops or cafés pumping cooking smells into the air. Building on the island is tightly regulated, mainly forbidden.
Written records mentioning Porquerolles date back to the third century. Porquerolles’ only village, next to the harbour, was founded in the early 19th century but in 1912 the entire island was bought by a fantastically wealthy adventurer named François Joseph Fournier for his second wife for 1,000,000,010 francs. He planted 450 acres of vines, as well as hundreds of trees; he also built Le Mas du Langoustier hotel (see below). The Belgian writer Georges Simenon was another fan and set two of his novels, Le Cercle des Mahée and My Friend Maigret, there.
In 1971, the French state bought most of Porquerolles, protecting it against urbanisation by granting it national park status and designating it a conservation area during the Eighties. As a result, the island’s landscape resembles the French Riviera of centuries ago: oak forests, olive, fig, juniper and strawberry trees thrive, as do lavender, rosemary, rock rose, myrtle and other Mediterranean flora. Electric green dragonflies add flashes of colour around the island’s creeks and coves. Butterflies find rich sippings in the bountiful supply of nectar. I spot a butter-coloured brimstone floating over lavender bushes at the beach’s edge.
Porquerolles is relatively unknown by the British, but is a favourite with the French, and is busy in the summer and on public holidays. The best months are in late spring, and September and October. Late May sees Porquerolles at its most beautiful. Tender shoots are still green and fresh, blossoms exuberant with new colour. Nature fizzes – just before the burn of the summer sun begins and the fading starts.
I look back at the beach. Turquoise waves break slowly on the pristine shore, making forays onto waiting white sand. The trees, just beyond their reach, sigh in the gentle breeze. I can see why Joseph Fournier thought it would make such a wonderful wedding gift for his bride.
Porquerolles also known as the Île de Porquerolles, is an island in the Îles d'Hyères, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. Its land area is 1,254 hectares (12.54 km2; 4.84 sq mi) and in 2004 its population was about 200.
Porquerolles is the largest, most westerly of the three Îles d'Hyères. It is about 7 km (4.3 miles) long by 3 km (1.9 miles) wide, with five small ranges of hills. The south coast is lined with cliffs, and on the north coast are the port and the beaches of Notre Dame, La Courtade, and Plage d'Argent.

Located between Marseille and Nice, Hyères is considered the original French Riviera, with the aristocracy regularly retreating to its winter warmth in the 18th century, followed by the artistic (Leo Tolstoy, Rudyard Kipling, DH Lawrence) not to mention royalty (Queen Victoria). Hyeres is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. The old town lies 4 km (2.5 mi) from the sea clustered around the Castle of Saint Bernard, which is set on a hill. Between the old town and the sea lies the pine-covered hill of Costebelle, which overlooks the peninsula of Giens. Hyères is the oldest resort on the French Riviera.
Originally a possession of the Viscount of Marseilles, it was later transferred to Charles of Anjou. Louis IX King of France (often known as St Louis) landed at Hyères in 1254 when returning from the crusades. A commandry of the Knights Templar was based at the town in the 12th century, outside the town walls. The remaining remnant is the tower Saint-Blaise.
Its position facing the Mediterranean to the south makes it popular with tourists in the winter and makes it ideal for the cultivation of palm trees. About 100,000 trees are exported from the area each year. As a result, the town is frequently referred to as Hyères-les-Palmiers (palmiers meaning palm trees). The three islands of the Îles d'Hyères (namely, Porquerolles, Port-Cros, and the Île du Levant) are just offshore. Porquerolles and Port-Cros form the Port-Cros National Park. The commune has a land area of 132.38 square kilometres (51.11 sq mi).
The railway station Gare d'Hyères offers connections with Toulon, Marseille, Paris, and several regional destinations. The airport, which is known officially as the Toulon-Hyères International Airport, is 4 km (2.5 mi) to the southeast of the town centre, on a sandy plain close to the seashore. The area was first used by private aircraft at the beginning of the 20th century.
In 1920, after the marsh had been drained, French naval aircraft used the field, and, in 1925, it became an official base of the French Fleet Air Arm (Aéronavale). It has been a commercial airport since 1966, but the navy maintains a significant facility for helicopters and fixed wing aircraft within the perimeter. There are currently (2009) scheduled flights to and from Stockholm, Bristol, Ajaccio, Paris, London, Brest, Brussels, and Rotterdam.

Saxon Switzerland National Park , is a National Park in the German Free State of Saxony, near the Saxon capital Dresden.
It covers two areas of 93.5 square kilometres in the heart of the German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which is often called (the) Saxon Switzerland.
The National Park adjoins Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic.
The National Park is the centre of a natural area of almost 710 square kilometres.
This region is called Saxon Switzerland and is cultivated by humans in many places.
Some smaller towns and villages like Bad Schandau or Königstein in the district of Sächsische Schweiz are part of this region.
The core area of the National Park has a quiescent area of 40% and is covered almost completely by forest.
The status of National Park, which grants the highest natural protection in Germany, was established in 1990.
Saxon Switzerland is an intensively fissured and rocky canyon landscape.
The highest peak of the National Park is at 556 metres above sea level but only in short distance to the valley of the Elbe river at 110 to 120 metres.
It offers several different habitats and microclimate zones due to its strong vertical division.
The National Park still hosts some forms of forest without human intervention, which is an exception in central Europe.
The special forms of mountain forest and gorge forest are endangered in Europe generally.
Because of the sabulous soil and the fissures many places in that area are drier than normal for the temperate zone and offers rough conditions.
This makes this area so special.
The National Parks are, in some cases, in conflict with tourism and recreation.
One objective is to raise the inviolate area to 75%, which means limiting the areas of hiking and climbing.
Today there are some 400 kilometres of hiking paths, 49.9 kilometres of biking paths, and 755 climbing locations with around 12,600 possibilities of climbing routes.
The National Park is part of a larger region that serves as a recreation area close to Dresden.
Bad Schandau has a station in the EuroCity network and is some 45 minutes away from Dresden.

Porquerolles (French pronunciation: [pɔʁkəʁɔl]), also known as the Île de Porquerolles, is an island in the Îles d'Hyères, Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. Its surface area is 1,254 hectares (12.54 km2; 4.84 sq mi) and in 2004 its population was about 200.
Porquerolles is the largest, most westerly of the three islands in the Îles d'Hyères. It is about 7 km (4.3 miles) long by 3 km (1.9 miles) wide, with five small ranges of hills. The south coast is lined with cliffs, and on the north coast are the port and the beaches of Notre Dame, La Courtade, and Plage d'Argent.
The island's village was established in 1820, with its lighthouse constructed in 1837 and church in 1850. The entire island was purchased in 1912 by François Joseph Fournier, apparently as a wedding present for his wife; he planted 200 hectares (500 acres) of vineyards which produced a wine that was among the first to be classified as vin des Côtes de Provence.

We spend an evening in the Haut de Cagnes were we took in some great views and found a great meal.
