Abomey was the capital of Ancient Dahomey for around 300 years starting in the 17th Century. The influence of the Portugeuse in this area are still clear to see in the present day. Sights in the city include the Royal Palace and gardens as well as the museum of Porto Novo kings.

The town of Grand-Popo has an intriguing history mainly due to the important role it played in the slave trade. The town oozes with African charm and the people are friendly. The town is about an hours drive from Cotonou and offers a perfect change of pace from the busy city. There are many backside hotels and resorts in the town and the beaches are a great place to relax and swim. Benin
Benin, formally the Kingdom Dahomey, located in Western Africa, is rich with history and culture. History tells us Benin has seen its fair share of demise as well as the rise to accomplishment. Here are a few facts about Benin that you may or not have known.
5 Facts You Might Not Know
1
Benin's main exports are cotton, oil, palm products and cocoa. While the primary industries are textiles, chemical production and food production, Benin imports very little necessities. Capitol goods, petroleum products and food stuffs are the top imports with China being the largest supplier. While Benin's economy is severely under developed, the country continues to maintain a steady flow with it's economy being based upon agriculture and cotton.
2
Benin's type of Government is Republic and is based upon French civil law. Benin, formally Kingdom of Dahomey, became self governing in the french community in 1958 and found it's independence from France in August 1, 1960. This is now a national holiday in Benin. Porto-Novo is the capitol of Benin but most business is conducted is Cotonou.
3
Benin, primarily a Fon speaking nation and French the official language, has a population of over 8 million residents. More than 42 ethnic groups create the population including African, Adja and Bariba just to name a few. Several religions also are present, with Catholicism being the largest practiced at 42 percent of the population.
4
At one point the coast of Benin was more commonly called the West African Slave Coast. The Portuguese were the first to explore the Benin coast and introduced slave trading around 1472. Slave trading was later abolished by the French but not until 1826 which brought about nearly 300 years of enslavement of African people.
5
Beninois, in the south of the country, have Akan-based names. The names usually indicate the day of the week that person was born. This is a long held tradition originally introduced by the Akan people.
The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo. The currency of Benin is the CFA Franc BCEAO †(XOF) Flag of Benin

Benin Travel Video
Benin Travel Video - If youre heading to West Africa to unearth lost treasure, look no further than Benin. This club-shaped country, on the western edge of Nigeria, was once one of the most powerful empires in Africa -- the Dahomey kingdom. The ruins of the Dahomeyans palaces and temples can be seen in Abomey, while Ouidah is a poignant reminder of where their riches came from: the slave trade. The Route dEsclaves in Ouidah was the last walk on African soil for slaves bound for Brazil and the Caribbean. Museums here and in Porto Novo, Benins lagoon-side capital, examine the resultant Afro-Brazilian society and culture. Cotonou, on the other hand, is urban Africa at its most frazzling and polluted - but is not without its own charms, a lively nightlife and good shopping being a couple of them.
Regardless of the ill-gotten Dahomeyan gains glittering in the Musée Historique dAbomey, there are plenty of treasures on Benins dusty streets and palm-fringed beaches. This is the birthplace of voodoo, the countrys national religion, exported by the slaves and distorted by Hollywood. Voodoo is an important part of everyday life and most towns bear signs of it, such as the fetish markets stocked with the heads and skins of every animal imaginable.
Elephants, lions and crocodiles can be seen in more animated form in the northern wildlife parks, notably Pendjari, one of the best in West Africa. Then there are the stilt villages, home to thousands in the southern lagoons, and the northern tata somba (fortlike mud huts) built by the insular Somba people. Not only is Benin a richly historical and cultural country, this politically stable nation is one of the easiest parts of West Africa to travel in.
