The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gardon River near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France. The Pont du Gard, built as three tiers of archways to bring water to the city of Nîmes, is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts, and one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 because of its historical importance. The aqueduct bridge is part of the Nîmes aqueduct, a 50-kilometre system built in the first century AD to carry water from a spring at Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus . Because of the uneven terrain between the two points, the mostly underground aqueduct followed a long, winding route that called for a bridge across the gorge of the Gardon River. The RLS Trail: Le Bouchet St Nicholas to Pradelles, France

Horses, cows, more pastures and through high weeds. Very little shade and we sat in the gravel under a lonesome tree to snarf down huge ham sandwiches. An eternity until we reached Pradelles and Hotel de l'Arche, our home for the night. Nobody at reception, we helped ourselves to a key and schlepped the bags up two steep, curvy flights of stairs.

The daily mileage is a killer in the heat. A hot bath and at least we smell like a new person!

Bergerac : Vue sur le Vieux Pont et la Dordogne

Dans le Périgord pourpre, Bergerac est une belle petite ville (30.000 habitants) toute chargée d'Histoire et l'une des trois sous-préfectures de la Dordogne. Le bourg et le château de Bergerac (qui a disparu depuis), apparaissent dans l'histoire en 1080. Tandis que la première mention du pont de Bergerac date de 1209. Histoire marquée depuis le 14e siècle par de nombreuses guerres, révoltes et trêves. Dans les vieux quartiers on trouve des ruelles bordées de maisons à colombages. La ville est traversée par la Dordogne, l'une des plus belles rivières de France. La ville est célèbre dans le monde entier pour ses vins qui proviennent des 12.600 hectares de vignoles qui l'entourent. Bergerac comporte de plus un aéroport international qui dessert le Royaume-Uni, les Pays-Bas et la Belgique. Le nom de la ville est rattaché à un personnage célèbre, Cyrano de Bergerac, qui est d'abord le personnage d'une non moins célèbre pièce de théâtre d'Edmond Rostand (1897). Pièce librement inspirée d'un personnage réel, Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), un écrivain français qui ne vécut jamais à Bergerac. Le panoramearth est pris de la rive gauche de la Dordogne, juste en aval du Vieux Pont. La vidéo commence par un zoom sur un bateau à voile, appelé Carpe Diem, ancré au milieu de la Dordogne. Au dézoomage se dégage progressivement la vue sur le vieux port, transformé en parking, la vieille ville, de laquelle émerge le clocher de l'église Notre-Dame. On voit la rampe de la Rue Hippolyte Taine monter vers le Vieux Pont. Dont on a une belle perspective à la seconde 56 de la vidéo. Puis, des maisons de la rive gauche. A 1 minute 51, on a une belle vue sur l'aval de la rivière. A la fin de la vidéo, zoom sur des rameurs sur leur canoë.
