Paris [France] Saint-Germain Des Pres is an amazing neighourhood in Paris [France]!
The Saint-Germain-des-Prés area stretches just south of the Seine and east of the Latin Quarter, and was once a large monastery and a tiny market town. Its name in French means Saint Germain in the meadows, and that was exactly where it was located: outside the walls of the city.
The monastery was founded in 532 by Childebert, the second king of France. It became rich and powerful, but did not survive the Viking raids of the 9th century. The monks then camped in the ruins until 990, when the monastery was rebuilt by King Robert the Pious.
The town between it and the city was a very lively place. Eventually theaters started popping up. By the 17th century, the town boasted the composer Lully's first opera house, Moliere's first theatre and the first Comédie Française. It eventually became a well-known literary and artistic center.
With construction starting in approximately 1000 A.D., the Eglise Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the oldest existing church in Paris. Most of it is Romanesque. The rounded arches, small windows and heavy walls of the bell tower are typical of the Romanesque style.
The area soon became a center for artists, intellectuals and writers. Already in the 17th century, the village was home to writers like Racine and La Rochefoucault. In the 19th century painters like Delacroix and Manet, and writers like Balzac settled here. Benjamin Franklin and Oscar Wilde lived near the square, as well. In the 1920s, many Americans were attracted by the charm of the neighborhood. Hemingway and his wife lived here, and Henry Miller often found himself in the district. Later, Picasso moved here and this is where he painted Guernica.
Life here still centers on the square in front of the church and on 3 famous cafés nearby. The square is a popular meeting place, often featuring musicians and sculpture displays.
Les Deux Magots, located at 6 place de l'Eglise Saint-Germain-des-Prés, is named for 2 Chinese figures on the wall inside, left over from when the café was a silk merchant's shop. When it opened, the café was a favorite of the poets Verlaine and Rimbaud. In the 1930s, Picasso liked to come here. In the late 30s, the café was frequented by the existentialist philosopher Jean Paul Sartre and the writers Camus and Prévert.
When the café became a favorite of the Germans occupying Paris, Sartre and his colleagues abandoned it for Café de Flore on the next block, at 172 Boulevard Saint-Germain. The owner gave them the upstairs to sit, drink coffee and write. Sartre wrote his famous treatise Being and Nothingness in this location.
The other famous drinking place is the Brasserie Lipp, across the street at 151 Boulevard Saint-Germain. It was favored by the poets André Gide and Paul Valéry in the 1920s and it was here that Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms.
The Institut de France, at 23 quai Conti, with its distinctive dome was built in the 17th century for Louis XIV's Prime Minister, Mazarin. It is now the French Institute, the headquarters of the five French academies of arts and sciences. The most famous academy is the Académie Française, whose jurisdiction is the French language.

Places to see in ( Calais - France ) Calais Town Hall
Places to see in ( Calais - France ) Calais Town Hall
The town hall of Calais was built in 1885 on the merging of the cities of Calais and Saint-Pierre, on a barren piece of land at between the two cities. It was designed in the neo-Flemish style of the 15th century, by the architect Louis Debrouwer. Work started in 1911 but was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1914. Repair of war damage and the completion of the building delayed its inauguration until 1925. It was again damaged in 1940. The belfry 75 metres high, contains one of the most beautiful chimes in the north of France. Rodin's statue the Burghers of Calais stands outside.
One of Calais’ finest landmarks is the Town Hall (1911-25) whose clock towering belfry can be seen for miles around. This magnificent neo-Femish-style structure built of brick and stone was finally completed in 1925 after being interrupted by The Great War. Its purpose was to commemorate the merging of the cities of Calais and Saint Pierre in 1885 on a piece of barren land between the two towns. Today it dominates the main square and can be visited by tourists. It houses paintings and is adorned with stained-glas windows telling the story of the departing English.
The windows also act to diffuse the sunlight around the grand staircase. The interior is renowned for the elaborate décor of the reception rooms. Attached to the town hall is an ornate brick clock tower and belfry that stands 74m/246ft high. The chimes of the bells are most appealing.

Victoria Apartment in Paris, France
This is a light and spacious one bedroom luxury apartment in the first arrondissement, the very center of Paris. Located on the 5th floor of a 1860 Haussmann building on a quiet, tree-lined avenue only steps from the banks of the Seine and minutes from Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Marais District or the Latin Quarter. The Chatelet metro station is a block away.
The Victoria apartment is very centrally located... almost in the exact geographic center of Paris. It is on a small side street one block from the Chatelet plaza with its beautiful fountain. The apartment is also one block from the quay along the Seine and adjacent to the transportation apex of the metro and bus network for Paris. There are many busses... and the metro is just at the end of the block. From this location you can literally walk to the following destinations: - Ile de la Cite (the original site of Paris) and Place Dauphine - Notre Dame Cathedral and La Chapelle - The Louvre - The historic 17 Century Maris district and the Pompidou center - The Ile Saint Louis - The Place Saint Michel on the Left bank and the Latin Quarter... and the Sorbonne - The Saint Germain des Pres district
The main metro line at Chatelet is line 1 and it runs directly to the Champs Elysées, Arch de Triumph, the Place de la Concorde, and the les Tuileries in one direction and the Place de la Bastille and the eastern side of the Marais district in the other direction. There is also a taxi stand just at the end of the block at the fountain/plaza.
Originally a typical Beaux Arts style apartment, the recent renovation and contemporary furnishings have added a modern twist to the elegant decor. Through two doors equipped with electronic card readers, you enter into the renovated historic hallway with access to the elevator; a short set of steps leads from the elevator to the apartment.
The large and impressive living room has high ceilings and two tall double-glazed windows (with black-out curtains) giving attractive wide views of the sky and street below. The classic feel of the original marble fireplace and over-mantle mirror is contrasted with the modern - and very comfortable - queen size sofa bed.
The bedroom is pleasant and light, also with two tall windows and black-out curtains. It has its own original polished marble fireplace and a very generous amount of built in wardrobe space. There is a separate flat screen television. The bed is queen size with a deep but firm mattress. Bed linens and towels are of the finest quality and there is an iPod player on the mantleplace.
The dining room features large windows as well and is contiguous with the kitchen but can be completely separated by an ingenious system of 'pocket doors' which slide away completely when not needed. The elegant Gustavian dining room table will seat four.
In the Swedish style kitchen there is a catalytic oven, vitroceramic stove with four hot plates, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and a very effective exhaust hood. All cooking utensils and other small appliances are top quality.
The large bathroom has a full size shower, basin, designer toilet and bidet, as well as a mirrored cabinet with power outlet. (A hairdryer and bathroom radio are provided.) A washer and separate dryer are located in a built-in cupboard (instructions are in English).
The apartment is equipped with fax and answering machine and two Ethernet DSL internet connection outlets and Wi-Fi.
Two LCD televisions plus cable decoders with 150 channels including CNN and BBC, a DVD player and a separate CD and radio sound systems complete the entertainment lineup.
In the hall closet, as well as space for baggage storage, there is a cyclonic HEPA vacuum cleaner, steam iron and ironing board plus a personal safe. The apartment has smoke alarms and a fire extinguisher.
SPECIAL NOTE: The elevator access is to alternate floors. There are ten steps to walk up from the elevator landing to the apartment if you press #4 or you can walk down if you press #6.
