Visiting Rügen Island, Germany
With one full day to explore Ruegen Island, the largest in all of Germany, we had an itinerary full of activities. One of the highlights included renting an e-trabi (Trabant) car of the former GDR (East Germany) era taking it for a spin. The typical engine had been replaced by an electric motor making it a more environmentally friendly ride.

We then visited Göhren where we sampled freshly made German bread with generous amounts of butter and herbs before checking out a couple of local museums featuring traditional farming equipment, horse drawn carriage equipment and kitchenware. Nearby we cooled off at North Beach where hundreds flock to tan and swim.
To visit more of Rügen we traded in our car for train ticket passes. Boarding the Roland Racer, a former steam engine commuter train, we passed scenic towns, forests and farmland.
Hearing about the famed chalky cliffs we headed over to Jasmund National Park to marvel at them in person.
Although we packed a lot into one day of travel we left feeling we barely covered the island. Hopefully we'll have a chance to return again soon to visit more areas.

So good morning from Germany. It is day four of our big road trip around the country and today we are exploring around Rügen Island.
So we have a very busy itinerary today. We are planning to visit the white chalky cliffs of Jasmund National Park. We're also going to be riding around in an e-Trabi and we're going to be traveling by steam engine train.
So that should be a real adventure and I think we're also going to finish things off with a few visits to museums.
So a fun day ahead. Let's go start exploring.
So we're about to ride on the Roland Racer which is an old fashioned steam engine train.
Though the train was once used as a commuter train for locals these days you're more likely to find visitors enjoying the scenic route.
The tracks run past farms, villages and stretches of forest. It is an absolutely spectacular ride.
So we have now arrived at a place called Königsstuhl at Jasmund National Park. And this is a world heritage UNESCO site and it is really well known for its white chalky cliffs. I'm sure most of you have seen the white cliffs of Dover. Well, Germany has something just like it.
So this is our sweet ride for the day. We're going to be driving an e Trabi around the island. So this is an old fashioned trabant. It would have been the car that they drove in East Germany the former GDR. And they've put in an electric motor in it so now it is good for the environment and we're going to be cruising. It is nice and colorful so I think we're going to make quite the impression on the roads.
So we are still visiting the town of Göhren but right now we are down at the beach here at the promenade. So this area is called North Beach and it is beautiful for strolling, maybe doing a bit of sunbathing and we have some great weather today so a lot of people are out just enjoying the sun.
We've got a slice of the local bread here. It has just been freshly made and if you look down you can see that it has got a generous portion of butter and also herbs. So let's try this out. It is amazing. So fresh. Such a generous amount of butter. That's probably about three times as much butter as I would normally put on my bread but it tastes really good.
We then visited a few local museums in Göhren which showcased life as it was a few centuries back. Their collection included a mixture of farming equipment, horse drawn carriages and furniture that would have found in local households.
That was a really busy day. We've just arrived back home. We're going to rest up because tomorrow we're off to a new destination.

Rügen is Germany's largest island by area.
It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The gateway to Rügen island is the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, where it is linked to the mainland by road and railway via the Rügen Bridge and Causeway, two routes crossing the two-kilometre-wide Strelasund, a sound of the Baltic Sea.
Rügen has a maximum length of 51.4 km (from north to south), a maximum width of 42.8 km in the south and an area of 926 km².
The coast is characterized by numerous sandy beaches, lagoons (Bodden) and open bays (Wieke), as well as projecting peninsulas and headlands.
In June 2011, UNESCO awarded the status of a World Heritage Site to the Jasmund National Park, famous for its vast stands of beeches and chalk cliffs like King's Chair, the main landmark of Rügen island.
The island of Rügen is part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, with its county seat in Stralsund.
The towns on Rügen are: Bergen, Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz.
In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow.
Rügen is very popular as a tourist destination because of its resort architecture, the diverse landscape and its long, sandy beaches.
The island receives about one quarter of all overnight stays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Most visitors come to Rügen between April and October, the peak season being from June to August, but its quiet atmosphere in winter is also appreciated.
The island offers a huge variety of different beach and shore areas.
Rügen is often visited by windsurfers and kitesurfers and offers more than fifteen different locations for surfing.
The most popular locations are Dranske, Rosengarten, Wiek, Suhrendorf and Neu Mukran.
On the peninsula of Jasmund is the Jasmund National Park, which consists of the beech forest of Stubnitz, including the famous chalk cliffs of Rügen.
On the Königsstuhl itself is the Königsstuhl National Park Centre, which has a multivision cinema and audio-guide exhibitions with information about the national park in several languages.

Prora, The Massive Nazi Resort Complex with 10,000 Bedroom
Prora the concrete complex is extend over a length of 4.5 km or 2.8 miles long and stretches like a ribbon along the beautiful sandy beaches of the East German, Ruegen Island. It is especially known for its colossal Nazi-planned tourist structures, in fact, the mega-resorts complex is six stories high, with a usable area of 185,000 square meters and 10,000 rooms, all are sea facing. Approx 150 meter from the beach and although they were planned as a holiday resort by the infamous Adolf Hitler, they were never used for this purpose. The complex has a formal heritage listing as a particularly striking example of Third Reich architecture. This massive building complex was began to construct in between 1936 and 1939 as a Strength Through Joy Kraft durch Freude or KdF Seebad Prora project and originally envisioned by Nazi politician Robert Ley. During the few years that Prora was under construction, all major construction companies of the Reich and nearly 9,000 workers were involved in this project. The onset of World War II in 1939, building on Prora stopped and the construction workers transferred to the V-Weapons plant at Peenemünde.
The hotel would be operational in the summer of 1940, but in 1939 when World War II broke out, the construction was halted immediately. Only the hotel blocks, the theater and the quay were at that time in carcass ready. Prora was never used for the purpose for which it was designed. During the war, parts of the complex used as a military hospital, an SS training school and, when the war was nearing its end, an inn for Germans whose homes were destroyed by the Allies.
In 1945 the Soviet Army took control of the region and established a military base at Prora. The Soviet Army's 2nd Artillery Brigade occupied block 5 of Prora from 1945 to 1955. In the late 1940s two of the housing blocks - one on the North and one on the South - were demolished and the remains mostly removed.
Hitler’s plans for Prora were ambitious. He wanted a gigantic sea resort, the “most mighty and large one to ever have existed”, holding 20,000 beds. In the middle, a massive building was to be erected. At the same time, Hitler wanted it to be convertible into a military hospital in case of war. Hitler insisted that the plans of a massive indoor arena by architect Erich Putlitz be included. Putlitz’s Festival Hall was intended to be able to accommodate all 20,000 guests at the same time. His plans included two wave-swimming pools, a cinema and a theatre. A large dock for passenger ships was also planned.
In the late 1950s the East German military rebuilt several of the buildings. Since the buildings had been stripped to the bare brick in the late 1940s, most of the exterior and interior finish that can be seen today was done under East German control. After the formation of the German Democratic Republic's (GDR's) National Peoples Army in 1956, the buildings became a restricted military area housing several East German Army units. The most prominent were the elite 40. After German reunification, the National People's Army of the GDR was absorbed into the West Germany Bundeswehr, that took over the building. Initially consideration was given to demolishing the buildings, but it was later given landmark protection and a tax break offered to developers to renovate it. Parts of the building were used from 1990 to 1992 by the Military Technical School of the Bundeswehr. From 1992 to 1994 a part of the building was used to house asylum seekers from the Balkans.
Today, Prora still stands mostly empty. Some of the rooms are used as gallery space, while another section houses a small museum devoted to the site, and most successfully, a portion houses Germany's largest youth hostel. Most recently it seems that there are attempts being made to turn some of Prora into luxury condos. Turning Hitler's vacation rooms for the common man into homes for the wealthy may be the best way to make sure Prora is purged of its checkered beginnings.

Rügen - The beautiful island in the Eastsea. Or rather Baltic Sea (Germany)
For Germans this Island is very well known for its beaches and spa like atmosphere. Especially the chalk cliffs are famous. I did a roadtrip and visited a friend on Ruegen and had to realize again, that my home country has also really nice places to visit...if the weather is good:) See places like Sassnitz, Binz, Sellin, Proras. But the east coast has even more interesting places like Strahlsund, Lübeck, Fehmarn or Timmendorfer Beach. Enjoy the film.

A bright sunny day is extremely encouraging to do something outdoors and I felt visiting the Rugen island is a good idea for this weather. Since there were no direct connections to reach the island from Hamburg, AND cycling around 300 kms was a bit toooo far, opting for a train was the most obvious choice.
Looking at the packed train compartments, I contemplated if I should have started earlier to beat at least some of crowd. No kidding, but it was so packed that people were sitting on the floor and the train conductor even asked 1 person to leave the train as his cycle wasn't parked in the correct spot. That's Germany for you, rules are followed by the books without any exception.
Anyway, so in order to reach Rugen, I will first change at Lubek to a train which will bring me to Rostock. From there I have regional connections before finally reaching my stay location for the night at Sagard.
During the ride, the sun kept playing hide and seek with the clouds, but the views were fantastic throughout. Rostock onwards was bright sun again which was rather reassuring.
Rügen is Germany's largest island. It is known for its sandy beaches and chalk cliffs. With water all around in sight, I quite enjoyed the bridge crossing before reaching Rugen. Reminded me of being on ship again! The train was still rather full, but having this little friend called Bouncy around sure was entertaining!
Due to the island's popularity over the years, it is easy to find accommodation at all price and comfort levels. Holiday apartments are a practical and cheap way to stay as well. If you prefer to stay in hotels or hostels, there is plenty to choose from too. Mine looked good and had a great view up front.
As per Maps, the mountain was about 12 kms and just under an hour's ride away, so, fueling up (for the body) at hotel's restaurant before the ride was an obvious choice. But then, this is what happened along the way:
After battling some really steep tracks and staying lost in the woods for quite a bit thanks to a lost GPS signal, I was overjoyed to finally see some 'civilization'. GPS signal was back as well and next stop was going to be at the Chalk mountain itself.
I also learnt about an incident that happened here a few years ago where in a big chunk of chalk came loose and fell down over a group of people who were hanging around by the beach below. This chalk totally buried them and few of theose people were never ever found. So, guys just be careful and aware of your surroundings while you're by that beach below. 19'
Next up - Sassnitz
Sassnitz is a small coastal city and it's only a short walk to the center from both the bus and the train station. The town itself is on cliffs above the harbor and the main attraction is the U-boat museum. I enjoyed my short trip here, the vibe was relaxing, view were stunning and the swing - definitely fun!
