Places to see in ( Liverpool - UK ) Mathew Street

Mathew Street is a street in Liverpool, England, best-known worldwide as the location of the Cavern Club, where The Beatles played on numerous occasions in their early career. Mathew Street is the centre of the Mathew Street Festival, which fills the streets of Liverpool every Summer.

Mathew Street connects Rainford Gardens (off Whitechapel) to North John Street, and is located in an area of the city centre known today as The Cavern Quarter. Historically it was the centre of Liverpool's wholesale fruit and vegetable market. Mathew Street is visited by thousands of tourists a year, who visit the Cavern Club and many surrounding attractions including a statue of John Lennon, a Beatles store and several pubs formerly frequented by The Beatles. A wall in Mathew Street is adorned by a sculpture by Arthur Dooley entitled Four Lads Who Shook the World.

Mathew Street was also home to the influential music club Eric's, which played host to many famous punk bands from its opening in 1976, despite only being open for 4 years. The fame of Mathew Street led to the arrest of 3 men in 2006 when a resident of Dallas, Texas, viewing the street's webcam, saw a burglary in progress and called Merseyside Police.

As a result, a statue of Jung was erected in Mathew Street in 1987, but being made of plaster, was vandalised and replaced by a more durable version in 1993. Today, Mathew Street is one of Liverpool's most popular nightlife destinations.

Coming Up

We have LMS 4-6-0 heaven on The West Coast Mainline.

We start at Carnforth the famous railway Steamtown also famous for the war time film The Brief Encounter.

The reason for our visit to Carnforth was to witness the return to the mainline after nearly a 2 year absents of Black 5 45231 Sherwood Forester.

This was her 1st mainline appearance since October 2015 & also the change of ownership of the locomotive when The Hitchen family sold 45231 to Jeremy Hosking in 2015.

Here we see her head for Hellifield on the little north western route from Carnforth as she does her test run.

We have a look round Carnforth including looking over from the station & road bridge Carnforth Steamtown the home of West Coast Railways.

While looking over we notice NELPG's ex BR Peppercorn K1 2-6-0 62005 undergoing her steam tests ready for her 2017 season on The Jacobites & also her roll in the Scottish legs in The Railway Touring Company's The Great Britain 10.

A while later we see 45231 returning from Hellifield tender 1st a successful test run on the 5M51 path to Hellifield.

We next see her head back to the MPD depot for turning & servicing ready for her move to her new home at Crewe H.S later in the evening.

We head off to Lancaster to see David Smith's ex LMS Jubilee 45699 Galatea as she heads for home back to steamtown on the 5Z43 Southall WCRC to Carnforth WCRC.

We end this video at Preston in darkness as we see 45231 coming to a stop at the station for a few moments before resuming her journey to her new home on the 5Z31 Carnforth to Crewe H.S.

Riding of the Bounds - Berwick-upon-Tweed - May 1st 2011

On a wonderfully sunny day 75 riders and horses left Berwick Barracks for the annual ride round the boundaries of Berwick (currently all of England north of the Tweed). Proceeded by the Coldstream Pipe Band and the flags of Berwick, Northumberland, Scotland, England and Norway they rode first to the Town Hall to be instructed by the Mayor.
