We visited LIMA, PERU for a week & this is what happened...
It's our first time in South America! We traveled from Mexico to Peru, and Lima completely took us by surprise.
►Get your Tangerine Travels swag!
In today’s travel vlog, we fly from Cancun, Mexico to Lima, Peru. After taking an Uber to our Airbnb in the heart of Miraflores, our exhaustion from a long travel day caught up with us. Despite wanting to get out and explore Lima, we had to sleep for practically an entire day. That wasn't ideal, but we decided it was better to be refreshed for our week in Lima. After all, we're making our first ever Lima vlog!
A Lima, Peru travel vlog wouldn’t be complete without the neighborhoods of Miraflores and Barranco, so on our first real day in the city, we decided to let a professional cyclist (a Lima local) guide us around on a bike tour of the city.
Miraflores is the most popular neighborhood for travelers visiting Lima. It sits right next to the coast with cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Barranco is Miraflores' colorful, bohemian neighbor, filled with murals, art, and historic architecture.
At first, we were worried the food in Lima wasn't as special as people had led us to believe. The first restaurant we tried, Buena Vista Cafe, was quite underwhelming (not typical food from Peru, though). We soon realized that authentic Peruvian foods like causa, ceviche, anticuchos, cancha, and picarones, are DELICIOUS. The more Peruvian food we tried, the more our mouths were watering for it!
Before our travels to Lima, we weren’t the biggest fans of ceviche but after tasting Peruvian ceviche, it’s now one of our favorite foods on the planet!
Come along with us as we explore the food scene in Lima and visit some popular attractions throughout the city!
------OUR LIMA RECOMMENDATIONS------
WHERE TO EAT IN LIMA, PERU
1. Mangos Restaurant (Peruvian Food, Located in Larcomar)
2. La 73 Restaurant (Peruvian Food, Located in Barranco)
3. Makoto (Japanese Food, Located in Miraflores)
4. Muya (Peruvian Food, Located in Barranco)
5. Panchita (Peruvian Food, Located in Miraflores)
6. Peru Gourmet (Peruvian Food, Located in Historic Center)
WHAT TO DO IN LIMA, PERU
1. Take a bike tour. We found one on Airbnb and felt like it was the perfect way to get ourselves more comfortable with Lima.
2. Visit Parque del Amor. This park is in the Miraflores neighborhood on the malecon. It's a great place to take some pictures and watch the sunset.
3. Explore the Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods. There are so many things to see, do, and eat in each of these zones in Lima. They are also considered some of the safest parts of the city.
4. Watch the changing of the guards. Every day at 12:00pm, you can see this fantastic ceremony at the Presidential Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) in the historic center. We recommend going early (the concert portion starts at 11:30am) to get a front-row seat.
5. Browse Peruvian arts and crafts at Inca Market. There are a few of these markets to choose from. They all contain thousands of local artesanías (handicrafts) such as blankets, colorful decor, stuffed animal llamas/alpacas, and so much more. You can walk around there for hours!
6. Stroll down the coast. In Miraflores, the malecon runs along the coast for miles. There is a walking/bike path through the entire thing and also benches, workout equipment, dog parks, playgrounds, and tons more to see and do.
7. Visit the 3rd most popular attraction in Peru, Larcomar. This oceanside shopping mall has dozens of shops, restaurants, and cafes.
8. Visit the Pre-Inca Ruins. If you enjoy learning about ancient civilizations and their impressive history this is a must-see.

The fun of outdoor adventure in Illinois at Starved Rock State Park
Starved Rock State Park is located near Utica in Illinois. It hosts more visitors than 10 of the 59 National Parks in the United States. And there is a good reason why!. Whether you enjoy hiking along the nature trails or viewing the many spectacular overlooks along the Illinois River, recreational opportunities abound. From picnicking to fishing to boating, from horseback riding to camping to enjoying winter sports, there’s so much to do that you’ll come back again and again. The backdrop for your activities are 18 canyons formed by glacial melt water and stream erosion. They slice dramatically through tree-covered, sandstone bluffs for four miles at Starved Rock State Park, which is located along the south side of the Illinois River, one mile south of Utica and midway between the cities of LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa.
The park is best known for its fascinating rock formations, primarily St. Peter sandstone, laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface. While the areas along the river and its tributaries still are predominantly forested, much of the area is a flat, gently rolling plain. The upland prairies were created during an intensive warming period several thousand years after the melting of the glaciers. The Illinois River Valley in the Starved Rock area is a major contrast to the flatland. The valley was formed by a series of floods as glacial melt water broke through moraines, sending torrents of water surging across the land and deeply eroding the sandstone and other sedimentary rocks.
During early spring, when the end of winter thaw is occurring and rains are frequent, sparkling waterfalls are found at the heads of all 18 canyons, and vertical walls of moss-covered stone create a setting of natural geologic beauty uncommon in Illinois. Some of the longer-lasting waterfalls are found in French, LaSalle and St. Louis canyons. Waterfalls, rivers and streams can undercut a cliff, creating overhangs in the sandstone, like Council Overhang at the east end of the park. Other sights can be seen from the bluffs themselves, which provide vantage points for enjoying spectacular vistas. The porous sandstone bluffs allow water to soak quickly through, only to collect in greater quantities on the slopes below. The resulting lush vegetation supports an abundant wildlife and bird population, including woodchucks, moles, vireos and catbirds. Wood ducks that nest in hollow trees occasionally can be seen paddling along the river’s edge. Evidence of beavers and muskrats can be seen as you walk along the River Trail.
Black oak, red cedar and white oak, as well as white pine and white cedar, grow on the drier, sandy bluff tops. Yellow bellied sapsuckers drill parallel rows of small holes on cedar trees and return to feed on sap and small insects. Service berry and northern honeysuckle–shrubs that prefer a well-drained area–attract scarlet tangers and cedar waxwings.

Episode 7: Bayfield County Wild Talks with Chad Abel About The First Tribal National Park
On this episode of Bayfield County Wild, as Co-hosts Nancy Christopher and Mary Motiff, director of Bayfield County Tourism, speak with Chad Abel, Division Administrator of Natural Resources for the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. They discuss the first tribal national park in the country, located at Frog Bay, as well as area events in the month of March.
Legendary Waters Resort & Casino
Legendary Waters is one of the most appropriately-named destinations you can find. Owned and operated by the Red Cliff band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the entire experience and view for visitors is truly “legendary.” Located on the shores of Lake Superior in Red Cliff, this hotel offers 47 deluxe rooms and premiere suites, each with a Lake Superior and Apostle Islands view. Even the casino has a view! This is a rarity, as most casinos in the United States don’t even have windows. The annual Pow Wow in Red Cliff features drummers, singers and dancers along with vendors selling traditional food and arts & crafts. Check travelbayfieldcounty.com for future dates, and visit the Native American Tourism of Wisconsin website (NATOW) for details on proper pow wow etiquette.
New Apostle Islands Coin
Over the last few years, the United States Mint has been producing quarters that highlight different national parks. It’s exciting to announce that the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is being honored with such a coin! There will be a forum for coin collectors at the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center in Ashland on Tuesday evening, April 10th and the official quarter launch and coin exchange at Legendary Waters Resort on Wednesday morning, April 11th. Further information can be found at travelbayfieldcounty.com.
Frog Bay Tribal National Park
Chad Abel shares his involvement with the first tribal national park in the country, Frog Bay Tribal National Park. Frog Bay is a pristine, undeveloped area on the Red Cliff Chippewa reservation. Though not affiliated with the National Park Service, the tribal national park title refers to the sovereign nation of the Red Cliff Band of Chippewa. This designation protects it from future development and provides public access to a portion of the park.
Located a few miles from Legendary Waters Resort & Casino on Frog Bay in Lake Superior, the park opened in 2012. Originally just a 90-acre parcel, it grew last year when another 87-acre parcel was acquired (the only remaining private property in Frog Bay), along with 80 acres that Bayfield County was using for timber management. In total, Frog Bay Tribal National Park is now approximately 300 acres with two miles of walking trails.
Balancing Tourism and Protection
With so much natural beauty in Bayfield County, it is a big responsibility to protect. Mary explains that there are many laws in place for the protection of Bayfield County’s natural resources, and that Bayfield County Tourism balances nature and tourism every day. Bayfield County is aware that its natural resources draw people from all over the world, and local residents want to continue to protect these assets.
