Ferry Ride From Red Hook (St. Thomas) to Cruz Bay (St. John) in US Virgin Islands
Ferry Ride From Red Hook (St. Thomas) to Cruz Bay (St. John) in US Virgin Islands - If you are looking to get an idea how the ferry ride is, this is the video to watch. We'll show you the ferry station, price for the ride and the type of ferry they use.
As we have described in our past videos, it takes almost a whole day to get from continental US to St. John, Virgin Islands. Taking a ferry is part of that journey.
We recommend for you to watch this video:
We basically flew from Houston (using Delta airlines), then stopped in Atlanta (their hub) and then flew to Charlotte Amalie airport in St. Thomas. Luckily, a friend picked us up from airport, so we can stay overnight at their house.
Ordinarily, you would take a cab from the Charlotte Amalie airport to Red Hook (the ferry station in St. Thomas), take the ferry to Cruz Bay on the st. John island and then take a cab or rent a car to get to your hotel/campground.
As you can see, this whole process takes a whole day. We are saying this, so that when planning for your trip, you allot enough time for a full day of traveling. Some people don't realize that it takes a whole day to get there.
The ferry station on the St. Thomas side is called Red Hook and the ferry station in St. John is called Cruz Bay. Note that you will also have to pay per bag that you bring, so just be aware of that especially if you have a tendency to carry many bags when you travel :-)

It Takes A Whole Day To Get To The U.S. Virgin Islands
Oh yeah! It has begun! This is Day 1 of a year long adventure to all 59 US National Parks. And yes, it does take a whole day to get to the US Virgin Islands. It involves flight/s, taxis and ferries, especially if your final destination is St. John, like us. Watch this video to see our experience getting there.
Long planning and discussion and prepping lead to this point of us finally starting this adventure. We owe it to many friends and family who helped us get here.
In this video, Our friend Hawk took us to the airport and we showed how long it takes to fly from continental U.S. to the Virgin Islands. . Clue: it takes a whole day.
We are amazed on how friendly and sincere the people are. It was also different experience to be greeted with free rum samples at the airport even before you claim your luggage. HAHA! That was awesome. After a full day of flying, I needed that.
We basically flew from Houston (using Delta airlines), then stopped in Atlanta (their hub) and then flew to Charlotte Amalie airport in St. Thomas. Luckily, a friend picked us up from airport, so we can stay overnight at their house.

I also shared about cistern water system and showed how scary the roads are at night. Dark, hilly and narrow. If you aren't familiar of where you are going, it might not be a good idea to drive at night as there are many dangerous cliffs. My friend's house was up the hill. However, it was very beautiful. I love their balcony overlooking St. John! Breathtaking!
Also, you should note that they drive on the left side of the road. Very important to note especially if you are renting a car.
