Retire In Rio San Juan Dominican Republic - Retire In Caribbean - Playa Grande
Rio San Juan and the Playa Grande is the next stop on our tour of favorite towns to retire on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. This area of the North Coast (Rio San Juan and Cabrera) is a favorite with retiring Americans, Canadians and Europeans. Our favorite little village, Cabrera, is only 13 miles from Rio San Juan and either town would be a good choice for nice, peaceful home away from home.
The expats that have moved to this area of the North Coast always brag about: low cost of living, million dollar views at bargain prices, freshest organic foods and seafood straight off the boat, friendly locals and expats and a beach town without all the tourist congestion.
Rio San Juan has several things going for it, including two famous attractions that are unique in the Dominican Republic. First is Laguna GriGri which is a natural lagoon. You can take a small boat through the mangroves at Laguna Gri Gri and make your way to the mouth of the inlet and straight out into the calm seas. A very nice little trip.
The other thing that is unique is the nearby Playa Grande beach and resort complex. Playa Grande beach is a stunning crescent shaped white sand beach that has been a long time favorite of tourists, locals and expats alike. Sitting right next door, overlooking Playa Grande beach is the very high end Playa Grande resort development and the Amanara resort. Latest word is that the developers will be investing over a billion dollars in the Playa Grande resort build out.
With all the development in the area, smart investors and retirees are taking a close look at both Rio San Juan and nearby Cabrera. If ever there was a case for location, location, location.... then one can be made for this area of the North Coast. Come check it out for yourself on one of our Discovery Tours. No substitute for planting your own toes in the sand and talking to other expats that made the move before you.

Number 10: Go for a hike in El Yunque National park – This is the only subtropical rainvforest in the US (besides Hawaii) and is filled with so much bio diversity. Make sure you spot the ylang ylang tree to smell the beautiful flowers used in some of the best perfumes.
Number 9: Have lunch in La Placita at Chef Jose Enrique’s restaurant. Jose Enrique is an award winning chef who uses his master culinary skills to enrich traditional Puerto Rican dishes.
Number 8: Shop in el Mercado in La Placita – Be sure to stop by and talk to Hector Ruiz Housler, who sells herbs and concoctions used to treat all sorts of ailments.
Number 7: Have a cafecito at Café Cuatro Sombras - Located in Old San Juan and has the richest, most authentic Puerto Rican coffee in town.
Number 6: Visit Casa Cortés - Indulge your senses in fine chocolate and fine art here. Try their chocolate and cheese snack and sample one of their delicious chocolate beverages.
Number 5: Go to Piñones for authentic Puerto Rican street food – Try the fresh oysters, clams and all of the delicious fried food offered here. Be sure to pass by the cultural center to learn the history of this important Puerto Rican neighborhood.
Number 4: Spend an afternoon in the Botanical Gardens – Take a tour and smell the cinnamon and bay rum trees and if you’re lucky, you just might spot a coqui.
Number 3: Stay on Condado Beach. I love the San Juan Marriott Resort and Casino. It’s a quick drive from the airport, has breathtaking views, and has amazing service.
Number 2: Have a Bioluminescence experience - Puerto Rico has three Bioluminescent bays which contain millions of micro-organisms, called “dinoflagellates”, that glow fluorescent in the dark when agitated.
Number 1: Explore the beaches. Puerto Rico is blessed with beautiful beaches around the entire island. With warm Caribbean water and happy vacationers relaxing with their good vibes, a visit to the beach is an absolute must. My top picks are Condado, Luquillo, Dorado and Bahia Beach.
Driving through Rio San Juan
Río San Juan is a pleasant fishing and farming town located approximately about a 10 minute drive west of Cabrera. This town's fishermen provide the majority of this region's fish supply. You can see the boats leaving from the end of Calle Sánchez and purchase some of their daily catch from the pescadores (fishermen) along this same street.
The area hosts a few charming places, nice beaches, and other attractive scenery - the most famous being the Laguna Gri Gri.
Boat Tours
You can take boat tours from this lagoon's clear waters entirely surrounded by magnificent mangrove trees, and see unusual rock formations to hidden caves and beaches. Snorkeling and diving can also be done in this area.

Retire In Cabrera Dominican Republic - Retire In Caribbean - Cabrera Expat Favorite
Expats choose to retire in Cabrera Dominican Republic for a lot of different reasons. This is the first Cabrera video on our tour or North Coast towns that expats choose for retirement. We will try to show you just a few of the reasons that so many Americans, Canadians and Europeans end up in Cabrera after checking out many of the places to retire in the Caribbean.
Many consider the region right around Cabrera to be some of the most beautiful scenery in the Dominican Republic. Cabrera is flanked by the mountain ridges to the south and the jagged Atlantic coast to the North. To most people, Cabrera is a hidden gem that they have never heard of. Why? Because Cabrera is not the typical little tourist town like most people see when they come on vacation to the tropics. Techncally speaking, Cabrera is not a beach town at all because it sits perched on rocky ocean cliffs. But it is surrounded on both sides by some of the most beautiful and natural beaches in the Caribbean. We show you a few in the video and there are a few more secret spots you will have to find on your own.
On our frequent Discovery Tours we guide to see the parts of the North Coast that make sense for you and your family. We help you find that perfect vacation home or home to retire full time. We help you meet others that have come to live in the Caribbean before you. We help keep you focused and in some ways help keep you on track to your goals of living the good life away from the icy winters, away from shoveling snow, away from high heating bills, away from high property taxes and even away from unhealthy processed foods.
Check out our website for full details about our Discovery Tour.
JARABACOA 4k Dominican Republic SO LUSH ! DJI MAVIC PRO
We spent the day in Jarabacoa which is a beautiful town in Dominican Republic in a mountainous area. There's so much to do! We had lunch at Corazon de Jesus thanks to our great friends who took us around, we got ice cream and went horseback riding.
We flew our drone in Jarabacoa and captured the palm trees and forest that spans for what seems like an eternity, so stunning & relaxing to be around!
I hope you guys enjoy this vlog, the next one will be CAYO ARENA, I'm so excited to share it with you!
