Rishop or also spelt as Rishyap is a Himalayan hamlet in West Bengal. 2591 m above sea-level, it's a nice quaint village away from city crowds, with picturesque views of snow-capped mountains. The sun plays vermillion through the day. At night the big sky seems to come closer. Beneath the sky the twinkling lights of Gangtok & Pedong are similar to the twinkling stars above. Tourists are attracted by the natural beauty of Neora Valley National Park (Sikkim) & Tiffindara. Both are enjoyed through trekking route which is a deep silent forest of pine, birch, fir & orchids with some soothing path following the chirps.
Lava is a small village, surrounded by virgin pine forests and often hidden in mists and clouds at an altitude of 2,350 meters, this small village lies 34 kilometers away from Kalimpong on the old trade route to Bhutan. It has a beautiful monastery of Bhutanese origin and a Nature Interpretation Centre. Lolegaon is a fabulous destination for the lovers of wildlife in their natural habitat. The age-old forest of towering pine, cypress and oaks with their mossy trunk is an ideal place for watching endangered Himalayan species like black bear and mountain goats, numerous colourful birds and butterflies and rare orchids. It is one of the few places in West Bengal to receive snow in winter. It is the entry point to the Neora Valley National Park from Kalimpong. The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch. The verdant forests are a popular spot for picnicking, trekking , hiking and bird-watching. Lava has gradually become a favorite tourist destination.
It has a beautiful Buddhist monastery of Bhutanese origin and a Nature Interpretation Centre. Popular for nature exploration and bird watching, it is also the starting point for treks into the Neora National Park, which abounds with floral and faunal wealth. Wild animals such as the Himalayan black bear and barking deer are found in these parts. Notable sites include Changey Waterfalls , Ratnarishi Gumpha and Lava Jamgyong Kongtrul Monastery.

On your way back, visit the Nature Interpretation Center of Neora Valley National Park which is located in Lava itself. The Nature Interpretation Center is open from 8am - 12noon, 1pm - 4pm. It remains closed on Thursdays.
Changey Waterfall is about 12kms from Lava. You should take a jeep type vehicle as the narrow winding road is full of boulders and can hardly be negotiated by a small car. It'll take about an hour to reach the Changey base and then walk down for about 20 minutes to see the wonderful waterfall gushing down from high above and disappearing into the lush foliage below. It's a quiet lovely place with nobody around.

Dooars are the foothills of eastern Himalayas in North East India. The Place is the gateway to Bhutan from India. Famous for natural beauty it is one of the most popular tourist destinations of West Bengal.
In our opinion it is better to start your journey from Rajabhatkhawa. Rajabhatkhawa is considered as the gateway to Bengal Dooars.
By train reach New Jalpaiguri station or Alipurduar Junction first.
By air reach Bagdogra airport.
The distance of Rajabhatkhawa from NJP is 171 Km and from Bagdogra is 183.4 km. It will take around 3-4 hours to reach Rajabhatkhawa from NJP or Bagdogra. Car rate is around Rs 2500.

Rishyap : The Land of Tranquility , Nature & Kanchenjunga . Rishop , Kalimpong , Darjeeling Himalaya . Best place for birding , butterflying , nature watch & peace. rishyap WBFDC, Lava Rishyap, Neora Valley Resort.
Rishyap is a small village and hill station in the Kalimpong district of the state of West Bengal, India. Rishyap is also spelt as Rishop. Rishyap was developed as a tourist destination recently in 1998. There are many myths and legends associated with the name Rishyap - Ri stands for mountain peak (some say it is lofty) and shop means age-old trees in Tibetan.
Rishyap is located at 27.03N & 88.18E. It has an average elevation of 2591 meters (8500 feet). The place is well known for the majestic views of the Kanchenjunga range. Over the years, many tourists accommodations have come up at Rishyap. The local Sherpas and Lepchas have built small cottage-type accommodations for tourist. Tiffindara, a sunrise-view spot, is about 1 km from here. The village is about 10 km from Lava and 28 km from Kalimpong. National Highway No. 31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes through Chalsa. The journey time from Chalsa to Rishyap is about 1 hour. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri.
During summer (March to May), the temperature varies from 22 °C to around 8 °C. Average winter (November to February) temperature is about 3°C.
Rishyap is a tranquil, small rural settlement of the Lepcha community in the mountainous landscape at an altitude of 8,500ft. It is only about 28kms to the east of Kalimpong in Darjeeling district. If you are visiting Lava, there is a motorable road of 11kms and also a trekking trail of 4kms from Lava to reach Rishyap.
Rishyap actually forms an integral part of the well known Neora Valley at the foothills of Tiffindara. Although it's a relatively new tourist destination compared to several others in the vicinity, it is still a virgin spot clothed in forests of pine, birch, fir, colorful rhododendrons and orchids with a wonderful view of the vast range of Kanchenjunga and many other Himalayan snow peaks. And this is exactly what the name 'Rishyap' stands for - 'Mountain Peaks and Forests'. And at night look below, and you get amazing sights of the sparkling lights of Gangtok and the small town of Pedong.
And that is all what you can expect to get there. You won't get any city or town life. Which means no restaurants, drinks, food stores or shopping. It's only the nature.
So if nature is all what you get in Rishyap, let's try to take an account of that. As I had mentioned earlier, from most places in Rishyap you get wonderful views of the Himalayan mountains, and there are some spots that offer you sweeping views of the snow peaks over a vast stretch of snow. And from one such spot like Tiffindara if you look around, you will get to see (from left to right) Mt. Kharg, Kokthang, Rathung, Kabru, Talung, Pandim, Kanchenjunga, Simvo, Narsingh and Mt. Siniolchu.
You will also be able to see some parts of the famous Nathula and Jelepla passes. And you will be among the dense concentration of pines, birch, fir and orchids. So if you are a nature lover, then Rishyap is one place which you should keep in your agenda.
Attractions and Activities in and around Rishyap
Note that most of Rishyap doesn't have motorable roads. So your only option is to walk and trek around to visit the nearby attractions.
Tiffindara is a view point for watching sunrise & sunset and about 1.5 kms of uphill trek from the base of Rishyap. You walk through the forests of birch, fir, pine and rhododendrons as you hear the chirping of the birds. It's a narrow forested trail and should be avoided during the monsoon. There are few places along the way where bamboo made benches are provided (now in bad conditions though) where you can take rest before you start your climb again.
Likely there will be some stray mountain dogs accompanying you and showing you the way. It takes about 40 to 45 minutes trek to the top. And the top is like a flat rocky platform created as a view point. And here on a clear day your hard work will be rewarded with a panoramic view of all the Himalayan peaks I mentioned earlier including that of Kanchenjunga. During sunset you can see the gold capped peaks with a play of rainbow colors. Try to carry trekking stick.
At Rishyap you can also walk down to Shiva Buddha Temple. As you climb up the red staircase you will see idols of Lord Shiva and Buddha mounted side by side.
Trek along the Neora Valley forest and reach Jorepokhri (a twin lake).
Other than Rishyap itself, another popular settlement in Neora Valley is the small sleepy village called Kolakham which is about 20kms away. Near to that is the wonderful Changey waterfall which gushes down from high above. Vehicles can't reach all the way up to the fall. You will need to walk down a narrow pathw
