This archipelago consists of five islands, three of which are uninhabited due to either their low elevation or infertile composition.
The two inhabited islands feature a vast array of landscapes, including arid limestone, dense woods, and sandy beach.
Some of Italy's political prisoners, from as far back as the Roman Empire to the years of Mussolini's reign, have been confined here.
In 1989, the Tremiti Islands' importance and beauty were confirmed when it was named a natural marine reserve.

Tremiti Islands Travel - Tremiti (Italian: Isole Tremiti) is an archipelago of the Adriatic Sea, north of the Gargano Peninsula. It constitutes a comune of Italys Province of Foggia, and forms part of the Gargano national park (Parco Nazionale del Gargano); the name of the islands is linked to their increased seismic hazard, with a history of earthquakes - the source word tremolanti is linked to tremors.
The islands were used for the internment of political prisoners during Benito Mussolinis Fascist regime. This was not exactly a novelty: two millennia earlier Augustus had sent his granddaughter Julia the Younger in exile to one of these islands (then named Trimerus).
The islands are now an important tourist attraction - due to the clear waters surrounding them. ( source Wikipedia )
