I started by having a delicious breakfast at the Real Intercontinental Guatemala and some fantastic coffee. From their we drove one hour south to Antigua. We partnered up with A La Carta Tours and Antigua Rides to give us this unreal food tour of Antigua.
We started by heading to the neighborhood of San Juan del Obispo. Their we saw a 15th century church and had some Chuchitos (Guatemalan version of Tamales). They were spicy and delicious!
Next up we entered Chocolateria Antigua to see how they turn Cacao into chocolate bars. We then tried 13 different chocolates. They were all so good! I had to buy myself some.
From their we walked down the street to El Abuelo del Vino which is a fruit fermenting factory. They ferment over 40 different fruits and turn them into fruit wine. We saw the process and tried a dozen very strong wines!
After that we drove across town to Cerro de la Cruz to get an incredible view over the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Antigua. To end the tour we hit up La Cuevita de los Urquizu to have a truly unique Guatemalan meal. When you visit Antigua you have to eat here!
Next time you head to Guatemala I recommend working with my friends at A La Carta Tours: and Antigua Rides

Aquí podrás encontrar museos, extensas áreas verdes, juegos para niños, lagos, unidades deportivas, centro culturales y un balneario que sólo abre en vacaciones de verano. Masks of Guatemala
By putting on another face, the mask wearer magically enters an altered state. Today in Guatemala, many distinct indigenous Mayan groups use masks in the performance of dances and pageants. The exact meanings of these ceremonies may be long forgotten, but they typically enact a mythical story intended to bring fertility, yield a good harvest or scare away evil spirits. All traditional fiestas include folk dancing whose forms date back hundreds of years to the conquest and beyond. Some of these dances are rooted in traditions brought from Spain - these are usually the religious celebrations. Then there are the dances rooted in Mayan tradition where animal masks are often used in dances like Toritos (the Little Bulls), or El Venado (the Deer)..
FIRE: Dia de los Muertos 2013; Antigua, Guatemala
In Guatemala, kites are associated with the commemoration of loved ones for Days of the Dead as symbols of souls flying off to heaven. Here I combine the Guatemalan symbols with the Mexican ofrenda-- this year especially dedicated to my friend Rosa Yllescas, who worked for me for most of ten years, and who passed away too young last December.
Hotel Casa Anita - Concheros dance
During your holidays at Hotel Casa Anita in Puerto Vallarta you an expect to see some public shows along the Malecon or at one of the parks around town. The Concheros dances are one of my favorite public shows.
The Concheros from Mexico City and the central provinces are one of the most important associations of dancers with thousands of members. Their name is derived form their musical instruments similar to mandolins, the concha, made of armadillo shells, from the Altiplano.
The Danza de los Concheros, of nahuatl descent, takes place in every state across
the Mexican nation where this ethnic group still remains; of a profound spiritual origin,
it is based on the veneration of the Sun, king creator of all things, and features dancers
which layout geometric figures as they follow astronomical patterns indicating the
position of the gods across the firmament.
Concheros or Shell Players celebrate the great events of life. The sounds of the shell rattles tied to their feet urge them to dance until they drop with fatigue; their plumes take them close to the skies, to a floating sensation, to the possibility of soaring to the rhythms created by long-gone ancestors, which give the dancers a unique opportunity to express their courageous nature and their personal conceptions of life and the universe. Each movement is born from the deep remembrance of ancestral theology and, when combined they become a dance of fused Catholic and pre-Hispanic traditions; a dance which started long before the Spanish conquest and evolved to embrace the Holy presence of the Virgin de Guadalupe, Patron Saint of Mexico. Simply put, is a tradition that has never been interrupted.
