San Onofre State Park 2013 - San Onofre State Park Tour
San Onofre State Park Tour 2013
This tour of San Onofre State Park takes us from Trestles to Camp Pendleton, California. We start off on a shuttle that drives us from the beach to the main highway (5-Freeway). From there we continue the tour via car along the 5-Freeway where we get a high-level view of the park as we move south toward Oceanside.
The tour begins from the northern point of the state park near San Clemente, California. This video starts by capturing a sunny day at Lower Trestles with Small Waves in the background during a surfing contest. See ocean water rushing across the rocky shore-line at Trestles. Trestles Gets its name from the train tracks and bridges that run through the beach.
San Onofre State Park and the Surfrider Foundation have staved off countless attempts to build a Toll road along the San Mateo creek (creek that drains into the northern portion of the park). This section of coastline is the last undeveloped beach area in Southern California and is fairly pristine. The San Onofre State Parks sits between the Christianitos Exit on the 5-Freeway in San Clemente and the Oceanside Harbor in Northern San Diego County. The park is intertwined with utility facilities, a newly retired nuclear reactor, a transportation weigh station for trucks, and Camp Pendleton.
This fertile area is actually a semi-arid desert featuring rolling hills that transform into large bluffs at the shore. The beach is lined with a variety of rocks that have traveled down the local creeks and rivers and from the deteriorating bluffs that stand tall over the beach area. The sand is a bit coarse. The ocean water quality is fairly good in the area as sewage and run-off is minimal since there are not any developments in the immediate area.
There are a number of small animals in the area, birds, and thriving sea-life. The plant-life in the area reveals the indigenous characteristics of the area that are typically replaced in the urban developments of Southern California. Many of the trails are dirt-trails so be ready for a little silt and dust.
In 2013 there are several parking locations available to tourists and visitors. The price is currently 15.00 per day for parking. Camping is also available although San Onofre State Park is not known for having the most comfortable accommodations. There are restrooms but they are a sparse and not always in the place you would like to have one. The park has added more restroom location in recent years.
If you come to San Onofre be prepared to walk. The place is all about beach trails. You will also see bicyclers and skateboarders traveling along the main cement path and road that runs along the coastline.
We get from one end of the park to the other in less than 10-minutes.
Some of the popular areas within the park include:
San Mateo Creek
Trestles
Old Man's
Trails

The US Centers for Disease Control has issued a travel alert suggesting that pregnant women postpone travel to Ecuador, where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. All travellers should protect themselves from mosquito bites. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all travel within the 20km exclusion zone along the border with Colombia except for the official border crossing town of Tulcan in Carchi province. There are a number of active volcanoes in Ecuador. The Cotopaxi volcano has experienced renewed activity in August 2015 and restrictions are in place. Don’t climb the Tungurahua, Reventador, Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes.
===================================
Ecuador is a country in Northwestern South America, with a Pacific Ocean coastline, lying on the Equator between Colombia, to the northeast, and Peru, to the south and east.
Cotopaxi is the world's highest active volcano. Many cities and sites in Ecuador are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Such cities and best known places are the Galapagos Islands, and the city of Cuenca.
Ecuador is the most biodiverse country in the world. Ecuador has over one hundred different types of hummingbirds and thousands of orchid varieties. Cuyabeno Wild Life Reserve, Mindo and San Luis de Pambil are all good places to see many types of flora and fauna. The Galapagos Islands are justly famed for their wildlife.
The Cuyabeno Wild Life Reserve is probably the best place to see the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador, even though there are other national parks which are also interesting (such as the Yasuni National Park). It's a place of high biodiversity and nature lovers should feel in paradise. That's a good way to discover the indigenous communities of Ecuador and to eventually meet a local shaman. It's necessary to get to Lago Agrio to reach the reserve. Private transportation is made possible by the local accommodation, which is provided by eco-lodges.
The beaches in Ecuador are amazing, including: Salinas, Bahia de Caraquez, Manta, Crucita, San Jacinto, and San Clemente. They offer very inexpensive hotel accommodations, great food and friendly people. But there are also very upmarket establishments as well.
History
=========
The Republic of the Ecuador was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Venezuela). Between 1904 and 1942, Ecuador lost territories in a series of conflicts with its neighbors. A border war with Peru that flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999.
Climate
=======
Ecuador has many climate zones, from tropical along coast to cooler and dryer inland at higher elevations; tropical in Amazonian jungle lowlands. Ecuador is unusual in that one can choose any climate one wishes by where in the country one travels to. Lying on the equator means there is no summer or winter; however, there are typically wetter and drier seasons. The 'wetter' season is usually between December - June , while the drier season runs from July - November.
Crime
=========
Ecuador has quickly become the safest country in Latin America (South and Central America). Its violent crime rate is half that of most of the United States with the popular cities of Cuenca and Loja being the safest.
Cities
=====
Quito - Quito, the capital of Ecuador stands at an altitude of 2,850 m. The city has the best-preserved, least altered historic centre in Latin America.
Ambato - The central city of Ecuador. Special celebrations during Carnival time.
Baños- The adventure capital of Ecuador at the foot of an active volcano having small eruptions of ash and lava. Volcano Tungurahua. There are also many hot spring mineral baths as its name would imply.
Cuenca - The third largest city in Ecuador and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Trust site
Guayaquil - Largest city in the country and largest port city
Loja - The oldest colonial city
Manta - Largest coastal city and third largest city in Ecuador. Fastest growing city in Ecuador. Home to the largest port in Ecuador
Otavalo - Small town only two hours north of the capital famous for its Saturday market of indigenous crafts and livestock
Ibarra - Town of 100,000 inhabitants halfway between Quito and the northern border
Riobamba - Starting point of the famous train ride down the Nariz del Diablo and gateway to Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak

From the historic city center to recommendable food places this video is meant to also help you find your way around and plan your stay in the area of Cartagena. All my tips can also be found on my website, this includes sights as well as restaurants and hotels in Cartagena.
In the next episode we are going to explore the various sights in and around the city of Medellin and take a look at the violent past of the country as well as at the transformation of it.

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.
