This cave is considered unique in the international volcano-speleological field and its genesis is associated with an important, effusive phase that involved the formation of a lava lake.

The Furna da Maria Encantada, also known as Furna do Castelo, is a Portuguese cave located in the parish of São Mateus, Santa Cruz da Graciosa county, Graciosa island, Azores archipelago.
This cavity presents a geomorphology of volcanic origin in the form of a lava tube located on a volcanic caldera slope. It has a length of 56.5 m for a maximum width of 4.9 m for a maximum height of 5.8 m. [1]
This lava tube, of very easy progression, is located on the summit of Caldeira da Graciosa, roughly aligned vertically with the entrance tunnel inside it. It has the peculiarity of having been originated by the transhipment of the lava on the edge of this crater which gives it a curious origin and the fact that the 3 openings that it has been caused by the lateral reduction of the walls and not of the ceiling, as well as the possibility of enjoying of a beautiful panorama on the interior of the Caldera of Graciosa and on the localities of Light and White Stones, as well as the Pico Timão and Serra das Fontes.
