The Transylvanian Saxons are a people of German ethnicity who were settled in Transylvania in waves starting from the mid-12th century until the late Modern Age . After 1918, when, in the wake of the Treaty of Trianon, Transylvania was separated from Hungary and became part of the Kingdom of Romania, Transylvanian Saxons, together with other German sub-groups in newly enlarged Romania , became part of that country's broader German minority. Relatively few still live in Romania, where the last official census carried out in 2011 indicated around 36,000 Germans, out of which approximately 13,000 were of Transylvanian Saxon descent.
