Places to see in ( St Osyth - UK )
St Osyth is a village and civil parish in northeast Essex. It is about 5 miles west of Clacton-on-Sea, and about 12 miles southeast of Colchester. It is located on the B1027 road and is named after Osyth, a 7th-century saint and princess. The name is locally pronounced Toosey. St Osyth is claimed to be the driest recorded place in the United Kingdom.
Before being renamed to commemorate Saint Osyth, the village was called Chich (also Chiche or Chick), from an Old English word meaning bend, in reference to St Osyth Creek. Thomas Darcy, the first Baron Darcy of Chiche was buried in St. Osyth.
St Osyth was the subject of an episode of Channel 4's Time Team programme, Lost Centuries of St Osyth, (series 12 episode 9, first broadcast in February 2005). This programme sought to uncover the early origins of the village, which was presumed to have grown up at around the same time as the Priory, in the twelfth century. Many of the investigations around the current village centre found little evidence of settlement earlier than the fourteenth century; it appeared that the early village centre lay some way off, between the Priory and the river.
The village was a focus for the St Osyth witch persecutions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with a total of ten local women being hanged as a result. In 1921 the skeletons of two women were discovered in the garden of a house in the village. One was claimed to be the witch Ursley Kempe who was the first to be prosecuted. The skeletons became a local tourist attraction.
St Osyth is claimed to be the driest recorded place in the United Kingdom with an average rainfall of just 513 mm per year. Although a significant part of the parish boundary is coast which does not need to be beaten, St Osyth is one parish which maintains the tradition of beating the bounds on Rogation days.
The neighbouring settlement of St Osyth Beach contains Essex's largest concentration of static caravan parks, including Seawick, St Osyth Beach (owned by Park Holidays UK) & Hutleys. The holiday parks boost the local population in the summer months by an estimated 7,000 people. Part of the beach is usd by naturists for nude bathing.

ENGLAND`S OLDEST HAUNTED CHURCH
Here Haunted Earth visit the oldest church in England of St Peter Ad Murum at Bradwell Juxta Mare, (Bradwell on Sea), Essex.
Reputedly 1,350 years old, the church was built from the ruins of the abandoned Roman Shore Fort of Othona by St Cedd when he converted the East Saxon tribes of Essex to Christianity.
The church is modelled on an early Coptic Christian design that originated in the former Christian countries of Syria and Egypt.
For many years the church was used as a cow barn until 1920 when it was re-consecrated and opened to the public.
Will Haunted Earth make contact with spiritual presences that still abound there? Tune in to find out.
FOOTNOTE:
Today the area is threatened by the presence of 10 off-shore wind turbines, and the re-opening and expansion of nearby Bradwell Nuclear (Magnox) Power Station which although closed by the government in 2002 they now want to re-open and increase it`s operation in the near future.
The future of this area of outstanding natural beauty looks very bleak.

50 Berkeley Square - London's Most Haunted House
50 Berkeley square is not only believed to be the oldest unaltered building in London but also the most haunted.
The four-storey town house dates back to the late 18th century, the first ghastly tale is that of a young woman who committed suicide by throwing herself out of a top floor window, after being abused by her uncle.
Mr. Myers lived in the house from 1827, he renovated it in preparation of his pending marriage but after being jilted by his fiancee, became a recluse. He spent his time living alone in the attic slowly going mad, while the rest of the house fell in to disrepair.
In 1872, Lord Lyttleton was challenged to stay a night in the attic, he took a shotgun with him and during the night fired at an apparition. The next morning he attempted to find evidence of what he had shot but could not even find the gun's cartridges.
Others who stayed in the attic weren't so lucky, in 1879 a night in the attic drove a maid mad, she died in an asylum the next day. The next night a curious man took up the challenge to spend a night in the room and went on to become the first person to be recorded dead in the house, the coroner's verdict was death of fright.
The second reported death at 50 was a sailor from HMS Penelope in 1887, several sailors stayed the night, the next morning one was found dead, having tripped as he tried to run from the house. The other sailor reported seeing an agressive ghost of Myers.
