Cyrene, or, the ‘Athens of Africa’, is an ancient city on the slopes of the green mountain of Kyrenaika, a coastal region in eastern Libya.A kind of natural canyon connects the lower city with the upper city that originated later. In the rock walls of the canyons, on the same level as the lower city, are a number of well preserved caves in which the Greeks had their baths. These bathing places contained niches and annexes and were supplied with water by the Apollon Spring. The Forum became the centre of city life, built above a Greek agora and surrounded by temples and monuments. Like that of the Greek Ship Monument that was erected following a successful battle at sea, with the winged goddess of victory, Nike, on the bow of a stone ship. The ruins of Cyrene have survived for thousands of years and continue to fascinate with all the intriguing mystique of antiquity.

Not forgetting the places and fortresses of GHARYAN, MIZDAH, AL-QARYAT, YIFRAN, JADU, NALUT, MISALLATAH, and AWINAT. The first site most tourists visit is TRIPOLI, Libya's biggest city, the queen of the seas.
It is an historical site. the city of Islamic civilization, Arab art and handicraft, where every monument tells a story. TRIPOLI has changed little since its foundation in the first millennium BC: it is still a lush garden filled with olive trees, palms, grapevines, and orange groves. The city has a wealth of old and new monuments. Travel east or west, to nearby LIBDAH or SABRATAH, and soak up all the history.

Take the highway east to the magnificent cities of the Green Mountain: DARNAH with its falls and splendid coast; AL BAYDA', a quiet city high up in the mountains; ancient SHAH'HAT (Cyrene) and beautiful SUSAH (Apollonia), TULMAYTHAH, TUKRAH, RA'S AL HILAL.... Libya offers you two thousand kilometers of splendid beaches, and some beautiful small cities each with its typical architecture and special characteristics, like AUWARAH, TUBRUQ, MISRATAH, AZ ZAWIYAH, AL-KHUMS, and ZLITAN. Explore Libya's desert in WADI ASH SHATI, the plain of AWAYNAT, BRAK, MURZUQ, and the oasis of AL KUFRAH, ZALLAH and BAZIMAH. Then cool off in AL BAYDA' or near AL MARJ, or on the plain of DARNAH.
As you go further and further into the desert, all you meet are waves and waves, the great sand sea, but then there are the refreshing oasis. Tunis is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film ‘Star Wars’. Tamerza is the largest mountain oasis in Tunisia, known as Ad Turres by the Romans. It has a pleasant canyon and has an abandoned old town. The town was abandoned after the river flooded for 22 days in 1969. It is located north of the salt lakes and receives fresh water from the nearby hills. It is in the hillcountry near the border with Algeria, and is 6km from Mides.

Tamarza is located close to the Algerian border, 70km from Tozeur. Tamerza is surrounded by steep and wild area country and is renownd for its clear water cascades and springs that irrigate the towns park.
Chebika is an oasis mountain south of Tunisia , specifically west of the governorate of Tozeur .
It probably corresponds to the ancient advanced post of Ad Speculum. Located on the limes Sahara linking Tebessa in Gafsa , the Romans there were using mirrors to communicate with other stations and report possible enemy incursions.
The present village of Chebika is built near the old abandoned village in 1969 as a result of floods deadly that left more than 400 dead in Tunisia. The site writes Jean Duvignaud , is placed in the intersection of two advanced mountain that opens here to the desert .
The urban fabric consists of a chessboard whose lines are formed by streets intersecting at the level of the market place.
