CYPRUS: Agios Neophytos Monastery [HD]
Agios Neophytos Monastery lies 10 km outside Paphos, near Tala village. Agios (means Saint) Neophytos was the founder of the monastery in 1159. He lived there (from 1170) and died in 1219 at the age of 85. He is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the Church of Cyprus.
Inside the Engleistra (place of seclusion near the monastery) Saint Neophytos led a hermit’s life until 1170. The Engleistra was initially a natural cave on the eastern side of a hill’s slope, and was carved into a place of seclusion by St. Neophytos. It consisted of two areas. One area was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros ( Holy Cross) and the other was the Saint’s cell, in which he also carved his tomb.
A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Engleistra. You can also can see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery. Or in the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period.
The main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after the death of St. Neophytos and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Adonis Bath Waterfall - love or hate it ?
Adonis Baths located in Kili Paphos, is one of the most beautiful and unique areas in Cyprus.Tradition says that Adonis the God of Beauty tended his horses in this place and hunted in the Akamas forest. According to Greek mythology Adonis and Aphrodite had many children here and the citizen of Paphos are supposed to be descendant of these two lovers. However, Artemis the Goddess of Hunting was jealous of the love between Adonis and Aphrodite and tried to find a way of killing Adonis. She threw a golden almond into the baths to try and get his attention. Poseidon the God of Sea saw what was about to happen so he covered the golden almond with a torrent to prevent Adonis from drowning. Artemis had another plan, she asked Mars the God of War to push the mountain onto Adonis at the baths.
Poseidon stopped the rocks moving towards the back of the river and Adonis was saved again. Adonis was not so lucky whilst hunting one day. A man distinguished as wild boar fatally wounded him. He returned to the baths but died in the arms of Aphrodite. Aphrodite could not bear to lose her beloved Adonis and begged for him to send back to earth every six months, each Autumn it is believed. Popular tradition connects Adonis Baths with the legendary visit of Digenis Akritas. The story says that he put one foot on each side of the River Mavrokolymbos and drank water from the baths. Until this day there is a place called Digenis feet.
It is advisable for visitors with bicycles or motorbikes to use the Tala Road. These Natural Exotic Environment gives visitors the opportunity to see and bath in the Two Level Waterfalls. The Traditional House of Adonis, the Traditional Watermill. The biggest statue of Aphrodite 10 metres high, as well as the biggest Statue of Dias stands at 4 metres high. Near the Baths the Statue of the two lovers Adonis and Aphrodite, the Statue of Priapos and Athena.
The road is marked as ''suitable for all cars - it is a bit rocky. As long as you are not in a hurry it's ok just steady away!
The ride to get there is quite rough and we only realised there is a €9 entrance fee when we got there. It should be noted that this place is privately owned and not part of the Cypriot myths and that other naturely formed places are free of charge to visit.
We tried to go down adonis trail but as soon as we saw a big wall of huge spiders and swamps and snakes, we changed our mind and come back. I think it should be said at the entrance that hiking shoes/boots are preferred. The water was freezing but very refreshing in July! We were lucky we were almost alone there.... otherwise the place would loose its charm...
