Crowd witnessing Nanda Devi Mahotsav, Nainital
Crowd witnessing the Nanda Devi Mahotsav, Nainital - Uttarakhand.
The Nandadevi fair is held at Almora, Nainital, Kot (Dangoli), Ranikhet, Bhowali, Kichha and also in the far flung villages of lohar (like Milam and Martoli) and Pindar valleys (like Wachham and Khati). In the villages of the Pindar valley people celebrate the Nanda Devi J aat (journey) every year, while in lohar people come from far and wide to Danadhar, Suring, Milam and Martoli in order to worship the Goddess. In Nainital and Almora thousands take part in the procession carrying the dola (or litter) of Nanda Devi. It is said that the Nanda Devi fairs started in Kumaon during the reign of Kalyan Chand in the 16th Century. A three day fair is held at Kot ki mai or Kot bhramari devi. The fair at Saneti comes every second year. Both these fairs are rich in folk expressions and many village products are brought for sale.
The name NAINA which means eye is derived from a temple to the goddess 'Naini Devi built on the upper edge of the lake and was destoyed by the landslip of 1880.
It was subsequently replaced by the present structure. The word Naina means 'Eyes' and 'Tal' means 'Lake'. The perimeter of the Naini Tal lake is of nearly 2 miles.
The word Naina is synonymous with Sati's eyes. Since then, devotees started visiting this temple. Once the devotee reaches the hill top, prasad can be bought from any of the various shops or it can also one's own offerings from home. After crossing the main gate, there is a big Peepal tree on the left side. On the right side of the temple there are idols of Lord Hanuman Ji and Ganesh Ji. After reaching the main entrance of the temple, there are two statues of lions.
Inside the temple, devotees have darshan of three deities. On the extreme left is Mata Kali Devi, the centre representing two Netras or eyes is Maa Naina Devi and to right side is idol of Lord Ganesh.
Though the temple is named after Naina Devi (another name for Sati), the biggest social occasion here is the festival held in honour of Nanda Devi.
The patron goddess of Kumaon hills and a local princess Sunanda Devi.
On the northern side of the lake is built a temple dedicated to Sati and is called the Naina Devi temple.

Durga idol immersion in Yamuna River
The idol of Goddess Durga Devi is installed on the first day and worshipped for nine successive days during Durga Navratri. The immersion, also called as Nimajjan or Visarjan is performed in an enthusiastic and entertaining atmosphere. Devotees participate in the immersion of Durga Devi idol with great devotion. Based on the regional traditions and culture Durga Devi Visarjan is performed .On the last day of Durga Devi Puja, Durga Devi is worshipped with utmost devotion. Devotees praise and pray to the idol of the Goddess for the last time in the year.Idol of Durga Devi is taken for a procession on the main streets to give an opportunity to all devotees to visit.. The procession of the idol of Durga Devi ends with the immersion of the idol into water.
The Yamuna, also known as Jamuna or Jumna, is the largest tributary river of the Ganges in northern India. Originating from the Yamunotri Glacier at a height of 6,387 metres on the south western slopes of Banderpooch peaks in the Lower Himalayas in Uttarakhand, it travels a total length of 1,376 kilometers and has a drainage system of 366,223 km2, 40.2% of the entire Ganges Basin, before merging with the Ganges at Triveni Sangam, Allahabad, the site for the Kumbha Mela every twelve years. It crosses several northern states as India which is why nearly 57 million people depend on the Yamuna waters. With an annual flow of about 10,000 cubic billion metres and usage of 4,400 cubic billion metres, the river accounts for more than 70 per cent of Delhi's water supplies.
Just like the Ganges, the Yamuna too is highly valued in Hinduism and worshipped as goddess Yamuna, throughout its course. In Hindu mythology, she is the daughter of Sun God, Surya, and sister of Yama, the God of Death, hence also known as Yami and according to popular legends, bathing in its sacred waters frees one from the torments of death.
The water of Yamuna is rendered safe through its course from Yamunotri in the Himalayas to Wazirabad in Delhi, about 375 km. However, the discharge of wastewater through 15 drains between Wazirabad barrage and Okhla barrage Wazirabad in Delhi is severely polluted. In 1909 the waters of the Yamuna were distinguishable as clear blue, as compared to the silt-laden yellow of the Ganges. However, due to high-density population growth and rapid industrialization today Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi, the capital of India, which dumps about 58% of its waste into the river. One official describes the river as a sewage drain with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values ranging from 14 to 28 mg/l and high coliform content.
The main sources of pollution in the river are households & municipal disposal sites, soil erosion resulting from deforestation occurring to make way for agriculture along with resulting chemical wash-off from fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides and run-off from commercial activity and industrial sites.
