콧사앗 소금마을을 뒤로하고, 젓갈 마을로 향했다. 젓갈마을은 남능호수 옆에 위치하고 있다. 우리나라 청평호수의 20배 정도 크기인 남능호수는 라오스 최대 인공호수이다. 댐을 건설하면서 수몰된 지역 주민들이 물고기를 잡아 가공해 팔면서, 지금의 젓갈 마을이 형성됐다고 한다. “남능 호수에서 물고기를 잡아 가시를 제거하고, 생선육질을 두드려서 부드럽게 만든 후 마늘, 고추, 돼지고기들을 섞어서 발효과정을 거쳐 판매하고 있어요.” 우리나라도 젓갈 문화가 있지만, 열대지방인 라오스에도 젓갈 문화가 발달했다. 젓갈 마을의 거리에선 남능호수에서 수확한 생선들로 젓갈을 만들어 판매한다. 라오스인들은 끼니마다 생선 젓갈을 즐겨 먹는다고 한다. “이 젓갈과 함께 채소, 육류 등을 섞고 참기름을 뿌려서 먹으면 맛있어요.” 라오스에선 찹쌀밥인 까오냐우를 많이 먹는다. 찹쌀밥을 적당한 크기로 떼어내 동그랗게 뭉쳐서 국이나 반찬을 곁들인다. 나는 젓갈을 얹은 찰밥을 먹어봤다. 어묵과 비슷한 맛이었다. 젓갈 마을에 어둠이 내린 지 오래지만, 이곳을 찾는 사람들의 발길은 계속 이어진다. “가족과 함께 방비엥으로 가는 길이에요.” 라오스의 음식문화는 국경을 접한 태국, 베트남, 중국의 영향을 받았다. 그래서인지 이곳은 아시아 여행객들 사이에서 필수 여행지로 꼽힌다.
