Ye Olde Fighting Cocks St Albans | Euro Trip 2018 Pt3
We meet up with Ye Olde Friends at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans.
Wikipedia:
Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is a public house in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. It is one of several pubs that lay claim to being the oldest in England.[1] The building is described by Historic England as being of sixteenth century appearance, but as the earliest date for which it can be proved to have been licensed is 1756 - and even that date is not certain - its claim to this record is somewhat uncertain.[2] Others such as the Ye Olde Man & Scythe in Bolton, Greater Manchester and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham may have better claims. Even in St Albans, the White Hart and the Fleur de Lys (currently called 'The Snug') have claims to have been trading as inns in the late medieval period.[3]

High in the north of Germany, right on the Danish border, lies the Flensburg Fjord - a holiday region with a maritime flair and Scandinavian cosiness. The special feature is their exciting history: sometimes the areas on the Baltic Sea were Danish, sometimes German.

Entry from: Manu National Park, Peru
Entry Title: Snakes, spiders and giant guinea pigs
Entry:
Manu National Park has to be one of the coolest and scariest places on earth. It´s also the most remote place we have ever been - it took 14 hours on a bus, and another 10 hours by boat just to get in.
As I may have mentioned before, we had to get up at 5am (again!) and jump on the bus for the first leg of our trip into the jungle. As we´d only got back from the Inca trail the night before, we immediately fell asleep. We were woken up a couple of hours later to look at some strange round buildings on a hilltop that were apparently built by a pre-Inca tribe from Bolivia in order to either store food, or as burial tombs. No-one really knows.
Back on the bus and now wide awake we realised that the lady in the tour office may have been lying to us when she said the road into the jungle was good, and that no-one ever got stuck in the jungle (we were worried about getting out in time to fly to the Galapagos). The road was similar to the Most Dangerous Road in the World that we had mountain biked down in La Paz - only scarier! There is only one lane, and the only vehicles on it seem to be giant trucks. There are the remnants of landslides every few kilometres, and our guide told us that the previous month 60 tourists had to be flown out of the jungle by helicopter because the road was closed.
Generally the traffic goes into the jungle on Mondays, out on Tuesdays, in on Wednesdays etc, and so the traffic usually flows all in one direction. Unfortunately for us, we were going in against the flow of the traffic, and quite often had to back up the road a few hundred metres around hairpin corners, and with a sheer drop of hundreds of metres on one side in order to let a truck pass who was coming up the hill. Our bus got stuck a few times, so it was a long, slow journey to our first lodge. We went down from about 4200m to around 300m so it was strange going from cold weather, to very hot and humid.
Our lodging in each place was a series of very clean and tidy bamboo huts on raised platforms above the ground, usually with your own ensuite which was very unexpected. There was no electricity, but you really didn´t need a hot shower in 95% humidity and 35 degree heat. We made sure we tucked our mosquito nets in VERY tightly each night, and I also checked the room, under the bed, and in between my sheets for snakes and spiders every night.
On the first day on the way to the lodge we visited a flock of male birds called the Andean Cock of the Rock, which is the Peruvian national bird, and which all gather in the same bunch of trees waiting for the females to come. They were bright red and very noisy. Very pretty and unusual though. As we´d lost our good camera, our guide managed to take a couple of photos of them with our camera through the lens of his telescope.
When we got to the lodge after 14 hours on the bus we first visited their coca plantation where our guide Locito told us all about it, and explained how to make cocaine (see Anton´s blog about Locito, to learn more about our crazy guide). Then it was an early dinner, and early to bed again, given that we were getting up at 5 the next morning.
After another 2 hours on the bus (stopping only about 4 times to dislodge our bus from various giant potholes int he road) we reached the port of Atalaya where our boat was waiting for us. There were 8 of us altogether; me and Anton; a group of three rather odd Americans about our age (more about them later); two Swiss guys who we got along with really well; and a skinny English guy who never spoke unless spoken to. Then we had Locito our guide, Evers the chef, and two boat drivers: Augusto and Raul. Altogether a rather odd bunch.
The boat trip ...
