Corsica - Corse - Korsika
Corsica is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 18 regions of France. It is located southeast of the French mainland and west of the Italian Peninsula, with the nearest land mass being the Italian island of Sardinia to the immediate south. A single chain of mountains makes up two-thirds of the island.
While being part of Metropolitan France, Corsica is also designated as a territorial collectivity (collectivité territoriale) by law. As a territorial collectivity, Corsica enjoys a greater degree of autonomy than other French regions; for example, the Corsican Assembly is able to exercise limited executive powers. The island formed a single department until it was split in 1975 into two historical departments: Haute-Corse (Upper Corsica) and Corse-du-Sud (Southern Corsica), with its regional capital in Ajaccio, the prefecture city of Corse-du-Sud. Bastia, the prefecture city of Haute-Corse, is the second largest settlement in Corsica. The two departments, and the region of Corsica, merged again into a single territorial collectivity in 2018.

Megalithic walk to the plateau of Cauria dolmen and menhir timelapse in Corsica to Sartene
Megalithic walk to the plateau of Cauria (dolmen and menhir) timelapse in Corsica to Sartene
the Pallagiu alignments, the Stantari Menhirs statues, the Renaghlu alignments and the Funtanacia dolmen.
The number and importance of megalithic remains make southern Corsica a paradise for prehistoric enthusiasts.
Close to Monacia and Tizzano, the plateau of Cauria, south of Sartenais is particularly rich in megaliths.
With their belts, their loincloth and their cupules the statues of Cauria, reported from the 19th century by Prosper Mérimé, is among the most beautiful and important of Corsica. Between 5500 and 1500 BC, they are the work of the megalithic also called Torres.
Menhirs of Pagliaju
The north-south cardinal orientation of the seven groups of Pagliaju menhirs is characteristic of all alignments of menhirs. Note that most of these menhirs are only sketched and can not be considered as standing menhirs.
Seven groups of menhirs constitute all the alignments. Their axes are oriented north-south, only one has an east-west direction.
This general orientation of Palaggiu is characteristic of all alignments of menhirs and unrevised menhirs statues. All menhirs have been carved. Most of them are only sketched and although they can not be considered as menhirs statues, since none of them have a head clearance, they all have a human silhouette.
Stantari Menhirs
I Stantari's alignment includes beautiful menhir statues bearing weapons. These standing menhirs are called in Corsica stantari: the petrified.
One can admire, in the alignment of I Stantari beautiful statues menhirs armed with rapiers.
Menhirs of Rinaiu
This beautiful alignment of menhirs also has fragmented slabs from a dolmen associated with the whole
To get to Rinaiu's alignments you have to cross a field of cows. Note the importance of the alignment of menhirs and the presence of fragmented slabs from a dolmen associated with menhirs.
Dolmen of Fontanacica
Located on a small mound near the site of Stantari, the dolmen of Fontanaccia, bears the Corsican name of Stazzona di u diavulu (devil's forge). This dolmen consists of a monolithic cover slab resting on six uprights, its weight is estimated at fifteen tons. The burial chamber it houses is oriented to the east was sealed by a slab of which there remains today only the threshold.
at the foot of the hill of U Gregu, the Fontanaccia dolmen is the best preserved of the Corsican dolmens. The name of dolmen or stazzone, means big room.
The alignments of I STANTARI and RINAGHJU are megalithic monuments made of standing stones, menhirs and statues-menhirs in granite, evidence of the occupation of the site by men from the Neolithic.
Some of these menhir statues, armed, are characteristic of the primitive island art and have contributed to the reputation of the site.
Corsica currently has more than 900 menhirs located mainly in southern Corsica and more particularly in the region of Sartène.
The prehistoric sites of the plateau of Cauria
The plateau of Cauria, 15 km south of Sartène, was for a long time difficult access. According to popular belief, megaliths were used at night for devilish practices.
The statues of Cauria bring perhaps more novelties by themselves than dozens of other statues menhirs of Corsica together. First, by new details such as belts, loincloths, arms and hands, as well as cups dug on each side of the head ... Then by their position north of an alignment, by their identification with the other so-called classical menhirs, as well as by their orientation
It is at the foot of the hill of U Gregu, between Sartene and Tizzano, that lies the Fontanaccia dolmen. This monument, whose famous writer and archaeologist Prosper Mérimée made the discovery in 1840, is a true reference for lovers of megaliths. The area in which it is located abounds with other dolmens (called stazzone) and menhirs (stantari) to explore.
The alignments of Renaggiu (or Renaghju) and Stantari, respectively containing 25 and 40 menhirs arranged in single file, are to be seen absolutely.
An enigmatic nickname
It should be known that between 5000 and 2500 years before J-C, the dolmens had for function to shelter the dead but also to remember them.
It is therefore funerary monuments that some have long taken for sacrificial altars or places of night worship.
Some still regard them as the tombs of the victims of Satan, hence the name forge of the devil given to the Fontanaccia dolmen
