Let’s Go! Osaki Balloon Festival

The Osaki Balloon Festival (大崎バルーンフェスティバル)is accessible via a ten minute walk from the JR Iwadeyama Station in Osaki-shi. From Sendai city, it is approximately a one hour drive North to Osaki without taking the tolled roads. Do note that this 3 day event in late November is weather dependent and will likely be cancelled on days of poor flying conditions (strong winds, poor visibility, heavy rain/snow).

2018 marked the 33rd year for this annual event that attracts pilots and visitors from across Japan to this town in Miyagi prefecture. Waking up at 4:30am was difficult and I apologize for the lack of energy in the video (a combination of catching a cold, lack of sleep and a frigid morning), but once the sun came out by late morning, it was a great day. I hope I was able to capture the wonder and beauty of witnessing so many colorful balloons all at once.

The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my ES children to get outside and explore. Only basic English is used in the videos so that children learning English as a second language can follow along.

Hanami in Mikamine Park at Nishitaga, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. I continue my spring ride through the Mikamine Park in Sendai City. The wind is blowing like mad, but it is beautiful sunshine and after the snowy winter is a nice change. I will say a few words about Sakura and Japanese traditions. Sakura in Japan has always been a symbol of ephemeral beauty, and was closely associated with the samurai and bushi. Life was considered to be short-lived and beautiful, like the cherry blossom flowers. This theme is still present, among others, in popular culture - especially in the manga and anime. Sakura in Japanese poetry is widely used Kigo - finger motif of the season. During World War II Sakura was a symbol of Japanese society motivator. Japanese pilots painted it on their airplanes before taking a suicide mission. Cherry blossom on the side of the bomber symbolized the beauty and transience of nature. The government promoted the belief that the souls of fallen warriors reborn in flowers...
