Cairns Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Cairns is a small port city, yet what it may lack in size it makes up for with its access to a bounty of natural beauty. In fact, Cairns is considered a gateway to tropical North Queensland. This eastern Australia city is where the rainforest meets the reef, with Daintree Rainforest to the north and the Great Barrier Reef to the east.
Start your day in Cairns by visiting some of the open parkland in the city center or going for a short swim in the man-made lagoon. Rent a bike on the promenade or hit the waves at Trinity Beach if you want to experience some Aussie surfing.
After a morning of activity, you might be ready to slow things down. A trip on the Skyrail® Rainforest Cableway is Cairns sightseeing at its best. The cable car will take you over the canopy of tropical rainforest and waterfalls. The last stop on this breathtaking 90-minute ride is Kuranda, a small mountain village where you can do a bit of shopping before heading back down to Cairns. The rail also takes passengers to Smithfield, which is less than one hour from Port Douglas, an excellent destination for upscale shopping and dining.
After your spectacular rail ride, consider checking out some of the Cairns tourism that puts you up close and personal with some of Australia’s more… dangerous wildlife. Hartleys Crocodile Adventures lets you immerse yourself in the daily life of a croc by taking a boat ride through a swamp-like habitat where several of the reptiles live.
If softer animals are more up your alley, fear not. Cairns tours should always include a stop to the Cairns Tropical Zoo, where you can make some kangaroo and koala friends.

Ellis and Trinity Beach - Cairns
Ellis Beach is located (12 mi) north of Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas. It’s located on the northern side of a rocky outcrop that separates it from the bustling Palm Cove. Ellis Beach is long and thin, stretching for just over 1 kilometer and is totally undeveloped which makes it look very natural and less busy than other beaches around. There is very little swell or surf here because of the rocky outcrop at the southern end and the large Double Island that blocks the sea. At the southern end of the beach the fishing is excellent, and at all other places, the sunbathing is great.
Trinity Beach is one of the favored Cairns beaches amongst locals. Trinity Beach is just as beautiful as the other northern beaches that line the Cairns Coral Coast but with a more down-to-earth and laid back casual atmosphere amongst classy surrounds. Trinity Beach is a family-friendly beach and the kids will love the sandy beach and shady trees with year-round safe swimming.

Australia: Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation
Traveling Australia, Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation. If you're looking for a tropical getaway on your next vacation, checkout Queensland's far north coast! Situated on the fringe of the world's oldest rainforest. The Daintree stretches along a ribbon of coastline and white sandy beaches that kiss the Great Barrier Reef.
Port Douglas is a small beach town with friendly locals, great accommodations, tasty eateries and fun shopping. The town is easy to walk with most of the food, shopping and several hotels situated around the main street, Macrossan. The main grocery store is Coles in the town center, a small Food Works is also nearby. Accommodations typically cost more in this popular vacation town, so it's a good idea to shop around online for cheaper deals. We like Agoda, Booking, Trip Advisor, and Wotif.
Cape Tribulation is an awe-inspiring experience. Getting there is easy, from Port Douglas take the Cook Highway north and follow the signs to the Cape Tribulation ferry, it's $23 roundtrip. No need for a 4x4 if you stay on the main road. This region is truly where the Daintree rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Explore the area by taking a bush walk (there are several great walk paths and boardwalks) or relax on the white sand beaches. Cape Tribulation has a handful of accommodations but a day trip from Port Douglas is a great option and we found a full day to be a good amount of time to see the sights.
Thanks for watching!

Christine

We stopped in to check out the some of the great natural experiences that can be enjoyed in Tropical North Queensland. We started in Cairns and went out for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
We sailed out to the reef to Michaelmas Cay with Passions of paradise. The great thing about this location is that you can snorkel right of the beach and if you are a certified diver you can also scuba dive this location.
We then decided to head north to check out the Daintree Rainforest. To get to the Daintree head towards Port Douglas. On your way to the Daintree be sure to check out Mossman Gorge, if its a hot day its a great place to go for a swim.
When you get to the Daintree there are many great walking tracks. As you adventure out along these tracks there are many different experiences that will enjoy and if you are lucky enough you may even see a Cassowary in the wild.
The Atherton Tablelands offers a range of things to do and see. Some of the places to visit are the crater lakes of lake Eacham and Barrine through to the Curtain Fig a must see. Heading further into the Great Dividing range you visit Mount Mulligan.
