Uplawmoor is a village in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. Its population was 700 as of 2016. Historic Uplawmoor, associated for centuries with the Barony of Caldwell and the Mure family, is still a vibrant community today, although bereft of the shops once to be found there. It has a primary school, hotel , village hall , sports ground for tennis and football and a golf club . Nearby is the extensive Caldwell Estate with the roofless 18th century Caldwell House, which was designed by Robert Adam. The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures featuring kelpies, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron, in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Scotland.The sculptures were opened to the public in October 2013 . Uplawmoor station was opened in 1903 and closed in 1962. The line remains open from nearby Neilston to Glasgow. Caldwell Station was renamed Uplawmoor in 1962 and closed itself in 1966.

SCOTLANDS HIDDEN ASYLUM

CALDWELL HOUSE

Originally built in 1771 as a mansion house designed by famous Scottish architect Robert Adam, Caldwell House has been hidden deep in the outskirts of Glasgow for over 245 years.

In 1927 it was converted into a hospital for the treatment of children with mental illnesses and brutal deformities, it continued to be used for this purpose until it was closed in 1985.

It was then bought by a private owner with intentions of turning it into a nursing home, however plans for this were brought to a sudden and eerie end in 1995 when the main house was burned down under suspicious circumstances.

Ever since then the house has stood derelict and dilapidated, with rumors of ghostly apparitions and paranormal activity giving residents in the surrounding areas shivers up their spine.

Caldwell is a mansion and old estate with the remains of a castle nearby. These lands lie close to the Lugton Water and the villages of Uplawmoor in East Renfrewshire and Lugton in East Ayrshire.
A new mansion house was built around 1712 by William Mure on the lands of Ramshead, however the present Robert Adam designed house was built by his son, William 'Baron Mure' about 200 yards lower down from the original. Caldwell is the last in a series of early experimental houses in the castle style which began in England with Ugbrooke House and in Scotland with Mellerstain House in Berwickshire. The house is protected as a Category A listed building.

In 1799, Jean Hunter Mure, writing from Caldwell, records that Mr Mure is at present in the very agony of making a new garden on the Brandy Hill behind the stables and offices. He has converted the old house into stables and means next year to take away the offices entirely which will make an immense improvement to the place for at present they are not a beautiful ornament . This new garden was extensive and incorporated a hot-house.

Caldwell House was the Mure family home until 1909. In 1927 Govan District Health Board converted the building into a hospital for the mentally insane and later a children's home which operated until 1985. Alterations, including the removal of the main stair to accommodate a lift shaft, led to a general decline in the state of the interior. External changes also occurred. These included fire escapes and additional boiler room and laundry buildings attached to the house. In 1987 the estate was sold off in lots by the Secretary of State. In 1995 a serious fire caused further internal deterioration and the loss of most of the roof. The building has been on the Scottish Civic Trust's Buildings at Risk register for some years. In 2006 attempts to secure restoration of the building through a Council led restoration project were initiated

Being at this place made me think of the second season of the show American Horror Story... ASYLUM! With thoughts of the opening scene of the first episode when Adam Levine explores the abandoned Briarcliff Manor. Altho we didn't come face to face with bloodyface ( Zachary Quinto ). Hes exploring this in present day, but then we get to see its rich history and dark past with characters such as Sister Jude ( Jessica Lange ) Sister Mary Eunice ( Lily Rabe ) Lana Winters ( Sarah Paulson ) and Kit Walker ( Evan Peters ). It makes me wonder what would have went on here at Caldwell House, and how it is steeped in history and moments that no one will never know about except from the people there at the time, whose ghostly spirits may still be there now!
