Gola Di Gorropu Sardinia Mountains
The Gorropu Canyon marks the border between the territories of Orgosolo and Urzulei and it is about 1,5 km long. Its features make this place an unmissable masterpiece of nature. It is said this is the Grand Canyon of Europe. A 7.5km ( return ) hike which is relatively easy until the last 100 meters .
Scenery is superb.

La gola di Gorropu o di Gorroppu è un profondo canyon ubicato nel Supramonte, in Sardegna, e demarca il confine tra i comuni di Orgosolo e Urzulei. La gola si è originata grazie all'intensa azione erosiva provocata delle acque del Rio Flumineddu. La Gola di Gorropu, con i suoi oltre 500 mt. di altezza ed una larghezza che varia da poche decine a 4 metri, è considerata uno dei canyon più profondi d'Europa ed ospita diversi endemismi sardi, tra i quali, la splendida aquilegia di Gorropu, detta altrimenti nuragica.
l territorio di Baunei, punteggiato quasi ovunque da rocce calcaree, si distende nel tratto centro-orientale della Sardegna, nella provincia dell'Ogliastra, un'area di cui rappresenta storicamente e geograficamente il confine a nord, a ridosso di Codula Elune, un'area incontaminata che sfocia nell'omonima cala, più nota ai turisti come cala Luna.
L'agglomerato più importante di Baunei si allunga su un costone calcareo esposto a sud-ovest, suddiviso dalla S.S. 125 (la cosiddetta Orientale Sarda) che lo connette al quartiere di monte Colcau. A una distanza di 8 km si affaccia sul golfo di Arbatax la frazione di Santa Maria Navarrese, confinante con il borgo di Tancau sul Mare, frazione di Lotzorai.
Fra le varie testimonianze quella più verosimile pare quella di Francisco de Vico membro del Supremo Consiglio di Sua Maestà il re di Spagna che nella sua Historia general racconta che la Sardegna, ormai liberata dal barbaro dominio e dal giogo tirannico dei saraceni, mentre genovesi e pisani litigavano fra loro per spartirsi quella parte di Sardegna che era stata occupata dai Mori, fu nuovamente aperta al libero commercio delle nazioni cristiane d'Europa. In questo contesto storico, secondo il Vico, nel 1065 una figlia del re di Navarra che di proposito cambiò sia il suo nome che le sue origini si rifugiò in Sardegna, in Ogliastra, ove, senza sentire la mancanza della sua patria, bene accolta come se fosse nata in Sardegna, edificò una chiesa alla Vergine che porta ancora il suo nome. La chiesa infatti è intitolata alla Beata Vergine Assunta e il borgo rivierasco prende il nome di Santa Maria Navarrese.
La sua primitiva popolazione è relativa ad immigrazione di pescatori ponzesi.
È presente un faro come riferimento per la navigazione che ha preso il posto di una torre di avvistamento medievale.
Il nome Arbatax, secondo un'etimologia diffusa, deriverebbe dall'arabo arba'at 'ashar (dialettale arba'ṭash), che significa quattordici, e che potrebbe indicare la quattordicesima torre di avvistamento, simile a tutte quelle presenti nelle coste sarde (la località è in effetti caratterizzata da una torre spagnola tuttora ben conservata). La difficoltà di dar credito a un tale etimo sta tutta nell'assenza di stanziamenti arabi nell'area, occupata in modo effimero dall'Amiride Mujāhid al-ʿĀmirī di Dénia (noto alle cronache come Mugetto o Musetto), che aveva occupato una parte minimale dell'isola nel 1015-16 (406 dell'Egira): periodo troppo breve per incidere tanto profondamente nella toponomastica sarda.

It is a great place to cycle in spring and fall.

Cala Luna is a beach of the Gulf of Orosei, in the province of Nuoro. The beach is the mouth of a river that marks the border of the municipalities of Dorgali and Baunei, the common claim that, in turn, the properties of the site, the stream, called Codula Moon, stretching for several kilometers, originandosi the slopes of M. Oseli (984 m asl) in the municipality of Urzulei.
The beach is characterized by the presence of some caves and inlets in the front of the shoreline, due to the action of sea erosion on the rock of calcareous origin.
Cala Luna is famous for its beauty and particularity, and has been used as a framework for the registration of many films of the Italian and foreign cinema.
You can easily reach by sea, through the service provided by some boats that make commuting to the nearby port of Cala Gonone, Santa Maria Navarrese, The Cove or Arbatax.
Reach the beach by land takes a couple of hours, with the path that starts from Cala Fuili, a latch on the cliffs overlooking the challenging enough Bue Marino caves, one branch leading to the entrance of the cave by land, and Cala Oddoana before down to the Cala Luna.
Alternatively, you can reach the beach from the junction at km 172.100 of the SS 125. You go through a narrow paved road with steep uphill and downhill, for about 10 km to the town of Telettotes where it ends. From here you must walk for about another 10 km inside the Codula Moon by following the river bed.
A third option is nell'imboccare the cart track leading from the street Dorgali - Cala Gonone opens up to the M. Malopes (253 m asl). From here we continue for about 8 km towards Cuili Bucchiarta. From here a steep path leads into Codula Luna about 2 km from the beach.
The coastal hike along the Gulf of Orosei, Cala Luna passes through several canyons and valleys. Although it is not a secret, but leads through a beautiful landscape and shady juniper forests and ends at one of the most beautiful bays of Sardinia not only, but of the whole Mediterranean area at all. Cala Luna offers not only a beautiful beach and fabulous water colors, but also a stunning cliff that is unparalleled. Cala Luna is one of the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia From the paved access road to Cala Fuili is a narrow path with wooden railing down to the Bay of Fuili. On the drifts distance at Cala Gonone of coarse pebble beach is the only way to stop for swimming. The path towards Cala Luna does not lead on the beach, but the other side of the canyon back up. An old ceramic panel shows the way Bue Marino / Cala Ilune. Here begins perhaps the most strenuous part of the walk: on a narrow, rocky trail to the tight uphill.
At the top are rewarded with a superb view over the coast evergreen shrubs to the azure blue waters of the Gulf of Orosei. From here, you can still take a look back at Cala Gonone. Through juniper forests and past fragrant macchia bushes towards Cala Luna continues through a forest of centuries-old gnarled trees. The so-called Phoenician juniper comes here in the rare tree form - because the popular precious wood was often used for centuries throughout the Mediterranean due to its fine-grained wood as construction, joinery and carpentry of wood, and is now correspondingly rare.
Many of the centuries-old cypress family form impressive archway over the trail at a junction towards Grotta del Bue Marino (the cul leads to a locked with a grid input to the monk seal grotto, is accessible only by boat from the sea side), you have to keep right. After a great vantage point on the coast and the southern foothills of the Cala Luna, which is still far off, it's easy inland on a well recognizable Hirtenpfad. Anyone who walks in the spring here, can discover on his way endless Affodilllilien.
The long sandy beach of Cala Luna and the stunning cliffs in the north, the dreamlike and therefore in Sardinians and holidaymakers so famous how popular beach is one of the top Beach locations in Sardinia, and is perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches, the Mediterranean has ever has to offer.
