The Blackbuck Lodge, Velavadar, Gujarat
Visualise this: You are sitting in the verandah of your cottage in grasslands extending for miles around. A gentle breeze is caressing your face while you sip a hot cuppa of your favourite tea, even as the setting sun lends a glow to your immediate universe around. And the picture gets complete when a group of Blackbucks amble in to munch at some grass, quenching their thirst in a water hole and then looking toward you to say, Isn't it a beautiful world?
It sure is when you are at the relatively new Blackbuck Lodge, one of the lesser known wonders of the hospitality world, spread across 70 acres. Just being there is an uplifting experience for the soul - you are at once connected to Nature's wondrous ways and to the cosmic. I am not exaggerating. You don't need any spiritual or religious or yoga gurus when you are here - whatever they may offer comes without guidance if you just allow the silence and serenity around to talk to you.
The next time you have a break, head out to Velavadar and book yourself at the Blackbuck Lodge. Other than a basic forest rest house, this is the only place to stay if you are visiting the Blackbuck National Park. If someone suggests you stay at a nearby town and come for a day visit to Velavadar, tell them there is now a much better option at the Blackbuck Lodge.
Designed to blend with its immediate environment, the cottages are aesthetically designed with all modern comforts. A restaurant serves good meals of your choice, and a lounge cum library is ideal for after-dinner relaxation.
Here is more:
* Rooms: The cottages are as good as they get. Luxuriously furnished, with high quality linen and light fittings. Rooms are spacious, with king beds, a study table and chair and space created by the windows to sit with your legs stretched - or even for a child to sleep. Air-conditioning is very effective for warm days, or you can enjoy fresh air on the deck chairs in the veradah - ideal for sunbathing and watching Blackbucks. The bathrooms are big too, with a tub and shower. There is a separate shower open-to-the-sky too; it's fun, and no one can see you! Surprisingly, each cottage has a flat screen television set connected to a dish for clear reception. There are facilities to make your tea / coffee in the room.
* Service: Impeccable. You can see the staff taking pains to ensure the newly built resort is well kept. Many a property lose their mint condition look after a while, but does not look like happening here. We sure hope so!
* Location: Unbeatable. Surrounded by wild country all around, with barely any man-made structures to mar the views. The park gates are about half a mile away, but you don't even need to go there all the time when Nature's creations come to you in your lodge anyway.
* Amenities: You can go for safaris in your own car, or book one in the lodge's old Wiley jeeps. Other amenities include a library with comfortable sofas and a dining where you can request cuisines of your choice.
* Liked Best: The location and the design of the cottages.
* Food Quality: Meals are made using fresh ingredients, taste good and served in fine crockery. There are no other eating options around, but you will not have reasons to complain here.
The Blackbuck Lodge is one of those places you go for a reason - or none at all. Check in, sit back and watch the magic of this world unfold.
Herd of blackbuck at Velavadar National Park - Gujarat
Herd of Blackbuck seen grazing in grassland at Blackbuck National Park, Gujarat.
Blackbuck National Park at Velavadar is situated in the Bhavnagar District of Gujarat state, India.
The blackbuck is the only living species of the genus Antilope. Its generic name stems from the Latin word antalopus, a horned animal. The specific name cervicapra is composed of the Latin words capra, she-goat and cervus, deer.
Established in 1976 in the Bhal region of Saurashtra, the park is located around 42 km from the district headquarters city of Bhavnagar. Hugging the coasts of the Gulf of Khambhat on the south, it is spread over an area of 34.08 km², which was primarily a vidi (grassland) of the Maharaja of the princely state of Bhavnagar. On the northern side, it is surrounded by wastelands and agriculture fields. The National park has been classified as 4B Gujarat-Rajwada biotic province of semi-arid bio-geographical zone.
Flat land, dry grasses and herds of antelopes have always attracted visitors to this park which has a unique grassland ecosystem. A successful conservation program for the Blackbuck, the Wolf and the Lesser Florican (a bustard) among others is ongoing. Considered to be an exclusive Indian species, the Lesser Floricans, which were free dwellers throughout the country, have their numbers plummeting in the recent decades almost everywhere in India. Today, the largest population has been sustained in this park. Local wolf numbers are increasing, as are Striped Hyena, with sightings quite frequent during daylight in winter 2012-2013.
The blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) is an ungulate species of antelope native to the Indian subcontinent that has been classified as near threatened by IUCN since 2003, as its range has decreased sharply during the 20th century. The native population is stable, with an estimated 50,000 individuals as of 2001.
