Vulcano: Hot mud bath, and Gelso, punta Aria. (#09)
After Stromboli, we sail along other Eolian islands (eg.: Lipari) and stop in Vulcano, Ponante, to have a go at the hot mud baths.
We explore the anchorage southeast of Gelso (Punta Aria) to prepare the crossing to Messina strait. In calm conditions Punta Aria is a great place to stay: lush green vegetation, black sand, no construction except one agro-tourism restaurant farm . Mind the posidonia when dropping anchor...

Vulcano island Sicily- where to dock? & things to do | SeaTV
#Vulcano #island #Sicily- where to dock? & things to do | SeaTV
This video is about docking options in the Volcano island, depending on the wind direction
At Gelso- you can Anchor off the beach to the NE to the jetty in depths between 3-10m
Depths drop off quickly.
Porto Di Levante lie
s on the E side of the island
N of the Ferry- you can anchor- clear of moorings.
Porto Di Ponente- the pinnacle rocks on either side of the bay
Volcano
In the north of the island, two convenient and safe docking options, depending on the direction of the winds. We chose to anchor in Porto Di Levante, that lies on the E side of the island.
It is also possible to tie the dingy to the next restaurant platform. In a few minutes' walks, you can cross the island spur and reach the shopping area and the commercial anchorage in Porto di Levante.
Anchored in the magnificent bay of Porto Di Levante, on sandy soil (bright) and good grip on its northern part. Many commercial ferries should be considered in this bay, but it will be highly protected by northern and western winds.
A tour of the active maw of the mountain (with a steady emission of sulfuric fumes), an hour's hike, led us to a spectacular view of the whole chain of islands to the north and Sicily to the south. The hike is a marked walk of about 800 meters. Near the Black Sand Beach, you can soak in mud pools and hot water bubbling from the ground and pay for the nearby showers.
Near the centre of the life of Porto Di Levante, there is a supermarket next to it is a fruit and vegetable store. If necessary, get fuel only from the gas station using jerry cans. Scuba and paragliding enthusiasts will find active clubs. Rent a light car or scooter, you will be able to tour the island for about forty kilometres of paved roads leading to observation points where you can view all seven islands in the chain.

Ischia Island, Italy, History & Tourism
Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is almost entirely mountainous; the highest peak is Mount Epomeo, at 788 metres. The town is divided in two. Ischia Porto is the harbor district and commercial center of the island. and Ischia Ponte, the historic quarter, with its ancient castle and its stone streets. It is the largest of the three islands off the coast of Naples, (Procida, Capri and Ischia).
LOCATION
It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 kilometres from the city of Naples. It measures approximately 10 km east to west and 7 km north to south and has about 34 km of coastline.
POPULATION
The island is very densely populated, with 60,000 residents. More than 1,300 inhabitants per square km. And every year Up to 6 million tourists visit to the island for its volcanic thermal spas and as well for its beaches and food.
TOURISM
Ischia's main industry is tourism. Tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island's natural volcanic activity, its hot springs, and its volcanic mud. Most visitors head straight for the north-coast towns of Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte, Forio and Lacco Ameno. Of these, Ischia Porto boasts the best bars, while Forio and Lacco Ameno the prettiest spas and gardens. Every summer Italian families flock to Ischia's beaches in their thousands. Ischia a popular destination for German tourists.
HOW TO GO
The island is easily reached by ferries and hydrofoils from Naples.
HISTORY
Ischia is part of a large volcanic area that was very active in the distant past, and its rocks and mountains bear witness to their volcanic formation. In the eighth century BC, Ischia was colonised by the Greeks, and belonged for a time to Gerone of Syracuse (Siracusa), who built a fortress on the spot of the present Castello Aragonese. Repeated earthquakes and eruptions finally caused the Greek colonists to leave the island. In Roman times, the island belonged to the Emperor Augustus, who gave it to the Neapolitans in return for Capri. Earthquakes have been more common in recent centuries, and a large earthquake in 1883 destroyed many of the island's historic buildings.
