Keonjhar || travel guide || Sanaghagara Waterfall || Tourism place in Odisha!
Kendujhar District, also known as Keonjhar District(Odia: କେନ୍ଦୁଝର ଜିଲ୍ଲା)is an administrative district of Odisha state and one of the 5th Scheduled areas in Eastern India.[1] The town of Kendujhar or Kendujhargarh is the district headquarters.
The district has an area of 8240 km², and lies between 21°1' N and 22°10' N latitude and 85°11' E to 86°22' E longitude. It is bounded by Mayurbhanj District, Balasore District and Bhadrak District to the east, Jajpur District to the south, Dhenkanal District, Anugul District and Sundargarh District to the west, and West Singhbhum district of the state of Jharkhand to the north.
The district of Keonjhar presents a panorama of millennia, both from the geographical and anthropological point of view. It is as varied as the whole of Orissa with water-falls roaring gorges, mountains and minerals. The manifold expressions of nature in this district are unique in Orissa.
After the integration of the feudatory states with Orissa on 1 January 1948 the state of Keonjhar emerged as one of its districts of Orissa, with its headquarters at Keonjhar. Since then the name has been changed to Kendujhar District.
The whole district of Keonjhar was a princely state before its merger with Orissa. The early history of the State is not adequately known. It was most probably a part of the old Khijjinga territory with headquarters at Khijjinga Kota, identified with modern Khiching. It became a separate state with Jyoti Bhanja as its ruling chief sometime during the first half of the 12th century A.D. The then State of Keonjhar State comprised only the northern half of the modern district for a long time prior to the installation of Jyoti Bhanja as King. During the latter part of the 15th century the southern half was occupied by King Govinda Bhanja under whose rule Keonjhar was extended from Singhbhum in the north to Sukinda (a Zamindari in Cuttack district) in the South and from Mayurbhanj State in the East to the borders of the States of Bonai, Pal Lahara and Anugul in the West. During the rule of Pratap Balabhadra Bhanja (1764–1792 A.D.) two small areas of Tillo and Jujhpada were purchased from the Zamindar of Kantajhari and were added to the State. These were recognised as parts of Keonjhar in the Sanad granted by the East India Company to Raja Janardan Bhanj in 1804. Since then there had been no territorial changes of the State till its merger with the Province of Orissa. But after merger largely for the reasons of administrative expediency the areas of Tillo (7.51 km2) and Jujhpada (9.06sq.km.) were transferred to the districts of Baleshwar and Cuttack respectively, while a number of villages called Ambo group (14.84 km2.) of Balasore district were added to Keonjhar district.

Kendujhar District, also known as Keonjhar District (Odia: କେନ୍ଦୁଝର ଜିଲ୍ଲା) is an administrative district of Odisha. The district is one of the 5 scheduled areas of Odisha. The town of Kendujhar (or Kendujhargarh) is the district headquarters. The district has 3 Subdivisions, Anandapur, Champua, and Keonjhar.
Keonjhar is a land locked district situated in the northern part of Orissa. It is bounded by Mayurbhanj District, Balasore District and Bhadrak District to the east, Jajpur District to the south, Dhenkanal District, Anugul District and Sundargarh District to the west, and West Singhbhum District to the north.
The district of Keonjhar is highly rich in mineral resources and has vast deposits of iron, manganese and chromium ores. About 30% of the district's total area is covered with tracts of dense forests. Keonjhar also contains one of the oldest rock formations in the world, which covers an area of 100 km2. The district also bears the oldest stone inscription found in Orissa. In Sitabinj, fresco paintings were found in the cave shelter of Ravana Chhaya, which date to the 5th century A.D.
On the eastern half of the district are the planes of Anandapur. To the West is a range of hills containing some of the highest peaks of Orissa. These peaks include Gandhamardan (3477 ft), Mankadnacha (3639 ft), Gonasika (3219 ft) and Thakurani (3003 ft). About half of the area of this district is covered by forests of Northern tropical deciduous type trees which include Sal, Asan, Piasal.[2][additional citation(s) needed]
The highlands consist of clusters of rugged crags and the mountaintops appear to be sharply ridged or peaked, however they have extensive tablelands on their summits. In some areas, isolated hills rise abruptly from the plains, but most areas have a general elevation of over 600m. The highlands form the watershed for a number of rivers, including the Baitarani River.
The temperature in the district begins to rise rapidly in the spring with the highest temperatures recorded in the month of May. The maximum recorded temperature is 44 °C.[additional citation(s) needed] The weather cools during the monsoon in June and remains cool until the end of October. The temperature in the month of December can drop down to 11.7 °C. The minimum temperature recorded was 7 °C. The average annual rainfall is 1,534.5 mm.
In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Kendujhar one of the country's 250 most backward districts.[3] The district is one of the 19 districts in Orissa currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
As per the Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act of 2015 the district is set to receive aid from mining companies and lease holders.[3]
Kendujhar district is largest iron ore producing district in India with the highest mining revenues generated in Odisha. However, the region is still neglected by both Central and state Government.

A scary Jungle trip to Orchha forest reserve
After covering the Sukma Dukma dam we reached Orchha forest reserve at around 4 PM in the evening. We enquired about the Jungle, the forest guard informed that presently no human being is available in the Jungle area. We took a daring decision to enter the Jungle. Since no conveyance was available, we borrowed forest guard's motor bike at Rs 250 and entered. Immediately after entering the Jungle we were fascinated by the natural beauty all around but soon we realised that we have entered into the life threatening surroundings. We were simply horrified by our own voice. As we proceeded, the bike has started giving trouble like non availability of both the brakes, lack of power etc. With great efforts we reached at our first destination i.e. view point. No doubt the scene was simply mesmerising all around with flowing river under the dense forest trees. It can be compared with Amazon's dense forest and river as shown in discovery channel. Suddenly we realized that Betwa, Chambal and Jamuni rivers are famous for crocodile. Also we realized that the situation is perfect for crocodile hide outs. We frightened a lot with simply the feeling of appearance of crocodiles. Very hurriedly we winded up and proceeded to the next location named Shikargaah. As we started the bike and proceeded it was noticed that no clear indication was available for Shikargaah. With our best judgment we proceeded and reached to a location which has no further indication of path. We got down and proceeded towards river and saw an old structure very next to the flowing river and under the shed of thick forest. We took a round and noticed that probably the structure was used for crocodile hunting. It had 4 doors towards land side and few raised window on river side making it fit for hunting. The scene was simply awesome and perfect amalgamation of flowing river under thick forest shed and availability of lot of stone surfaces. Any grazing sound was making us uncomfortable and driving us to leave immediately. Suddenly we heard loud grazing sound mixed with swimming splash. Without even conforming the cause we rushed towards our motor bike to make our ultimate efforts for scape route. I started applying kick to start the bike but it refused to start. In the mean time my fellow officer also jumped towards the route by which we came to this place. I had started sweating profusely and with my full effort I shouted and called him for help. After few attempt he turned around and noticed that I was shouting for his help. He hurriedly came to me and enquired about the problem. With dry throat I explained hurriedly that the bike is not starting. He took bike and started kicking it. After few attempt the bike got started. We both jumped over it and started the bike with full accelerator. None of us turned back to check the existence of the huge creature.
