This is the Second video of Day-10 of my Russian trip in which you will see me exploring the Altai Mountains, the unexplored part of beautiful Russia. I managed to reach Onguday with the help of a lovely elderly couple. After that, I got a lift in another car from Onguday to Geyzernoye Ozero, a place near Aktach. I stayed with Dima and Tanya in a log hut in Geyzernoye Ozero. We all paid 500 Rubles each for a night. Interestingly that was the coldest night of my trip. The temperature dipped to almost -10-degree Celsius. More details -

Russia Siberia Roadtrip
Siberia in Russia is huge! The distances are so insane you really have no idea before you try to move from one city to the next. Doing so by train often takes at least one night. After a week or so on rail it was time to hit the road!
The cities of Novosibirsk and Altai are 11 hours apart by car. That didn't stop me and a friend from attempting the drive on a whim with zero planing.
As mentioned, in this part of Russia the distances are huge but the scenery is quite picturesque. The nature and wildlife is beautiful. Siberia was a very enjoyable part of the country and I would like to visit again. Preferably during the winter when the temperature goes down to -50 celsius!

Irkutsk/Иркутск
Irkutsk, is a city and the administrative center of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, and one of the largest cities in Siberia. Population:650.000
The city proper lies on the Angara River, a tributary of the Yenisei, 72 kilometers (45 mi) below its outflow from Lake Baikal and on the bank opposite the suburb of Glaskovsk. The river, 580-meter (1,900 ft) wide, is crossed by the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Dam and three other bridges downstream.
The Irkut River, from which the town takes its name, is a smaller river that joins the Angara directly opposite the city. The main portion of the city is separated from several landmarks—the monastery, the fort and the port, as well as its suburbs—by another tributary, the Ida (or Ushakovka) River. The two main parts of Irkutsk are customarily referred to as the left bank and the right bank, with respect to the flow of the Angara River.
Irkutsk is situated in a landscape of rolling hills within the thick taiga that is typical in Eastern Siberia.
According to the regional plan, Irkutsk city will be combined with its neighboring industrial towns of Shelekhov and Angarsk to form a metropolitan area with a total population of over a million.
Irkutsk is the administrative center of the oblast and, within the framework of administrative divisions, it also serves as the administrative center of Irkutsky District, even though it is not a part of it. As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the City of Irkutsk an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[citation needed] As a municipal division, the City of Irkutsk is incorporated as Irkutsk Urban Okrug.
The coat of arms of Irkutsk features an old symbol of Dauria: a Siberian tiger with a sable in his mouth. When the coat of arms was devised in 1690, the animal was described as a tiger (babr, a bookish word of Persian derivation) with a sable in his mouth. This image had been used by the Yakutsk customs office from about 1642. It has its origin in a seal of the Siberia Khanate representing a sable and showcasing the fact that Siberia (or rather Yugra) was the main source of sable fur throughout the Middle Ages. (Actually, the English word sable is derived from the Russian sobol).
By the mid-19th century, the word babr had fallen out of common usage, but it was still recorded in the Armorial of the Russian Empire. Furthermore, the tigers became extinct in this part of Siberia. In the 1870s, a high-placed French heraldist with a limited command of Russian assumed that babr was a misspelling of bobr, the Russian word for beaver, and changed the wording accordingly. This modification engendered a long dispute between the local authorities, who were so confused by the revised description that they started to depict the babr as a fabulous animal, half-tiger and half-beaver.The Soviets abolished the image altogether, but it was restored following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Important roads and railways like the Trans-Siberian Highway (Federal M53 and M55 Highways) and Trans-Siberian Railway connect Irkutsk to other regions in Russia and Mongolia. The city is also served by the Irkutsk International Airport and the smaller Irkutsk Northwest Airport.
The Federal road and railway to Moscow and Vladivostok pass through the other side of the Angara River from central Irkutsk.
Trams are one major mode of public transit in Irkutsk. Other modes are trolleybus, bus, and fixed-route taxi, cycling (marshrutka). Irkutsk is characterized by an extreme variation of temperatures between seasons. It can be very warm in the summer, and very cold in the winter. However, Lake Baikal has a tempering effect thanks to which temperatures in Irkutsk are not as extreme as elsewhere in Siberia. The warmest month of the year is July, when the average temperature is +18 °C (64 °F), the highest temperature recorded being +37.2 °C (99.0 °F). The coldest month of the year is January, when the average temperature is −18 °C (0 °F), and record low of −49.7 °C (−57.5 °F). Precipitation also varies widely throughout the year, with July also being the wettest month, when precipitation averages 113 millimeters (4.4 in). The driest month is February, when precipitation averages only 7.6 millimeters (0.30 in). Almost all precipitation during the Siberian winter falls as flurry, dry snow.Wikipedia

Once again Russia makes our list thanks to extremely harsh subarctic climate. Be sure to pack an ushanka if you decide to come here because most of the land is made up of permafrost or frozen soil. Located in the Sakha, Republic of Russia, you wouldn’t have to travel far to reach the arctic ocean The temperature differences between summer and winter are quite shocking. The town holds the guinnes sworld record for the greatest temperature range that can differ 189 degrees F. How is that even possible. It can reach temperatures of 99 degrees in Summer but has gone as low as -90 degrees in both January and February. You do the math! Despite the drastic changes, about 2,000 call this place home.
5. Brocken Mountain, Germany
This place in Germany is certainly home to some extreme weather conditions. It might not have the record for coldest place on Earth, but it certainly has the capability of continuous, relentless snowstorms that can last months without stopping. Due to its exposed location of storms coming from Scandinavia and high elevation, it has an alpine like climate similar to Alaska or Iceland. Brocken Mountain has the highest precipitation of point in Northern Central Europe, the lowest temperature ever recorded was -18 degrees but take into consideration the surrounding ice and snowstorms this place is capable of, you should try to watch. This photo here, shows snow crystals clinging onto the trees in Brocken mountain, after a snowstorm covered the area in 31 inches of snow.

What do you think the coldest capital on earth is? Moscow, Bern, Ottawa? All Wrong! If you guessed Ulaanbaatar located in Mongolia good job! This city is regarded as the coldest capital on earth and suffers from long and unbearable freezing winters! We don’t even think Genghis Khan could have handled temperatures this cold. Just walking on the street with any exposed skin can result in pain. You really wouldn't want to forget a jacket living here. It’s also the largest city on the list with roughly 1.3 million inhabitants which is nearly half the country's population. Due to it’s high elevation, proximity to Siberia and lack of precipitation, it’s a rough place to live nonetheless. Due to a large amount of permafrost soil in Mongolia, it makes building foundations difficult. It’s believed this is why many Mongolians live in houses known as Yurts.
3. Eismitte, Greenland
Located in Central Greenland, this was the site of an expedition that took place during 1930 and 1931. Eismitte in German means central ice and refers to the campsite that was built. The coldest temperature recorded here was -85 degrees F and the warmest only reaching 27 degrees; which is still below freezing. It never seems to get above freezing here even during summer. The record high recorded in the month of July was still only 28 degrees. There’s basically no summer here. Here in this photo you the frigid campsite that was built in 1930. A 45 foot deep pit was built which served as a living quarters for the 7 month long expedition.
2. Plateau Station Antarctica
This is currently an inactive research center at the Antarctic plateau . Construction first began on December 13th 1965 and it was built for solar observation, micro meteorology studies, atmospheric studies and other things. This is the 2nd coldest place on earth and the lowest recorded temperature here was negative 123 degrees F on July 20, 1968. Summers here are obviously short and are always below zero degrees F. The winters are long, frigid and dark, making you wonder why anyone would want to do research here. A scientist there stated that every breath he took outside was painful and you had to worry about freezing your lungs or throat while inhaling.

This is the coldest place on earth. This was formerly a Soviet research station, very far inland on Antarctica. If anyone could deal with the extreme cold here, we imagine it would be the Russians!. The coldest month in Vostok Antarctica is the month of August, which would normally be the hottest for most people in the Northern Hemisphere! But this is Antarctica! But that doesn’t mean their summers are warm at all. The hottest temperature ever recorded here was in the month of January, reach 10 degrees F in 2002. The record low was an astonishing -128 degrees here. The research station has 4 months of no sunlight during its winter.
