The Date Museum (伊達博物館, Date Hakubutsukan) commemorates the Date Clan, who ruled over Uwajima for more than 250 years during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The first Date lord of Uwajima was Date Hidemune, who hailed from the main branch of the family based in Sendai. Uwajima grew and prospered under the rule of generations of lords from the Date Clan.
The museum exhibits a lot of artifacts and possessions of the Data family, such as weapons, family crests, scroll paintings, writings and daily-used items. It displays a sizable collection of beautiful folding screens (byobu) with precious paintings. Maps depicting Uwajima in the past enable visitors to see how the castle town has been reformed over the years. In particular, the waterfront west of the city has changed quite dramatically as a result of land reclamation.
Access info Date Museum is located close to Tenshaen Garden and it is a 20-30 minute walk from Uwajima Station. Or Uwajima Bus operates hourly buses between the station and Tenshaen-mae bus stop (天赦園前, 10 minutes, 150 yen one way), which is located a few steps from the museum.

Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (entry until 16:30)
Closed: Mondays (or following day if Monday is a national holiday), December 29 to January 3

Vlog 19: A Day in Nara
We went to Nara in this video! It's a good distance away from where we were staying in Namba. It was close to 2 hours away. However, it was definitely worth it. I came here four years ago with my host family and I loved it! It is definitely a great place to visit with friends, family, or just on your own.
I want to say in advance that over the next few weeks, videos might not go up at the usual time. This is because I'm going back to my university and will be adjusting to my schedule. Sorry!

The Oboke Gorge (Ōboke) has unusual geological strata, including a rudaceous schist formation designated as a natural monument. Oboke Gorge and neighboring Koboke Gorge a little ways downstream, are narrow, steep sided gorges near the entrance to the Iya Valley. Their names mean big dangerous steps and small dangerous steps as their jagged, rocky walls can be dangerous to navigate. Yoshino River has cut through the Shikoku Mountains over the ages, eroding crystalline schist into winding gorges with myriad shapes and forms, which almost look like marble statues.
The gorges are one of the leading outdoor destinations in Japan and are known for their beautiful natural scenery and for the variety of outdoor attractions.
River Rafting
The upstream of the Yoshino river, called Oboke and Koboke is famous for its torrent. And the river is one of Japan's most well known destinations for whitewater rafting. There are several outdoor adventure companies which offer guided tours. Full day and half day rafting tours are available, as well as a variety of other adventures sports such as hydrospeed and canyoning.
Hours: 8:00 to 20:00
Season: April to November
Admission: Half day tours start from 5200 yen

Access Information
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.

Oboke Sightseeing Boat Cruise
Guides show interesting rocks, many of which resemble different animals, along the way on this gentle 30 minute boat ride down the Yoshino River. Boats depart and return to a dock a short ways away from Lapis Oboke and Oboke Station. Passenger requires taking off their shoes and sitting on the floor of the boat during the cruise.

Admission: 1080 yen
Access Information
A rental car is recommended to visit the area.
1. The hourly limited express trains between Okayama and Kochi stop at Oboke Station along the way.
2. Oboke can be reached by train (30 minutes, 450-770 yen, hourly departures) or bus (40 minutes, 660 yen, 4 per day) from Awa Ikeda Station and then walk 30 minutes to 1 hour from the station.
