America's Wildest Places - Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is the most remote and far flung unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System. A place of great distances and greater dramas, the Refuge includes the spectacular volcanic islands of the Aleutian chain, the seabird cliffs of the remote Pribilofs, and icebound lands washed by the Chukchi Sea. Established in 3.4 million acres, the Refuge is home to mammals such as the polar bear, northern fur seal, Steller sea lions, otters and walruses; 40 million seabirds of more than 30 species such as puffins, auklets, cormorants and other migratory birds, and the marine resources upon which they rely.
Because it is spread out along most of the 47,300 miles of Alaska's coastline, the sheer span of this refuge is difficult to grasp. Its more than 2,500 islands, islets, spires, rocks, reefs, waters and headlands extend from Forrester Island, to the north of Canada's Queen Charlotte Islands deep in the southeast tongue of the state, to the westernmost tip of the Aleutians (and of America!), and north to Cape Lisburne on the Arctic Ocean. Traveling between its farthest-flung points would be the equivalent of taking a trip from Georgia to California.
So many facets of Alaska's history happened on the lands and waters of the Alaska Maritime Refuge that the Refuge seems like a time-capsule story of the state and the conservation of island wildlife.
Pre 1800s -- The first people come to the islands, the Russian voyages of discovery, the beginnings of the fur trade, first rats and fox introduced to islands, Steller sea cow goes extinct.
1800s -- Whaling, America buys Alaska, growth of the fox fur industry, beginnings of the refuge.
1900 to 1945 -- Wildlife Refuge System is born and more land put in the refuge, wildlife protection increases through treaties and legislation, World War II rolls over the refuge, rats and foxes spread to more islands.
1945 to the present -- Cold War bases built on refuge, nuclear bombs on Amchitka, refuge expands and protections increase, Aleutian goose brought back from near extinction, marine mammals in trouble.
Getting There
The refuge is headquartered in the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center located in Homer, which is at the end of the Sterling Highway, approximately 225 miles south of Anchorage. Regularly scheduled flights are available from Anchorage. The Alaska State Ferry System also serves Homer. Since most of the refuge is very remote, access is difficult and expensive. Tourists and visitors should contact the refuge for specific information about particular sites.

Checking out bears with Bearfoot Tours | Homer Alaska
While in Homer, we had the pleasure of going on an Airplane tour of Lake Clark National Park. We landed on the beach, and hiked around looking at Bears. It was an amazing experience, if you are going to be in Homer, give Bearfoot Tours a call....
Bearfoot Tours Alaska
Get a real up close view of grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Hop aboard a 6 person airplane, travel across the bay to a remote National Park and walk around with the grizzlies. It's like being in a zoo without bars. On your flight you may see whales in the water below, glaciers and volcanoes. Your pilot will guarantee that you will see some bears
Things to know:
• Located in Homer Alaska.
• Boots are provided.
• Plan for 4-6 hours.
• You may land on several different beaches until you find bears.
• The pilot has been flying for years and has an excellent safety record.
• Park rangers are sometimes present at Lake Clark National Park to give out Jr. Ranger badges and answer questions.
• The pilot is very knowledgeable about the bears and their environment.
• Bring snacks, sunscreen, bug spray and be prepared for changing weather.
This is a mind-blowing experience. If you truly want to see what Alaska is all about this is a must. Starting with the breathtaking views of glaciers and volcanoes to the exciting beach landing in the plane and finally watching the grizzly bears just yards away catching fish, munching on grass and cubs following their mothers, this is something you don't want to miss. After spending several months in Alaska we couldn't find anything to top this adventure and I bet you won't either.

Alaska 2018 - 35 [Homer, Kenai, & Beluga whales!]
In this video, we hang out in Homer, overnight in Kenai, and sleep on the side of the road so we can see Beluga whales. For more info and still photos, see our blog post:
Homer
We stayed at Mariner campground in Homer. RVs are $24 no hookups. But you can park right on the water.
We found vegan options at Two Sisters Bakery and The Bagel Shop.
We toured the town and stopped in to the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center to learn more about the area.
Kenai
Kenai was just an overnight as we made our way towards Anchorage. We had an uneventful stay at the Walmart. This is a good place to restock your supplies if you’re not planning a stop in Soldatna. We didn’t find much to do here.
Pullout near Beluga Point on the Seward Highway
We’d heard people were seeing Beluga whales at Beluga Point so we planned to stay in a pullout near there so we could hang out through a high tide or two. And we were lucky enough to see the Belugas come in twice during our stay.
Turnagain Arm sees the largest tidal range in United States, with a mean of 30 feet

SUMMARY
=======
The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (often shortened to Alaska Maritime or AMNWR) is a United States National Wildlife Refuge comprising 2,400 islands, headlands, rocks, islets, spires and reefs in Alaska, with a total area of 4.9 million acres (20,000 km2), of which 2.64 million acres (10,700 km2) is wilderness. The refuge stretches from Cape Lisburne on the Chukchi Sea to the tip of the Aleutian Islands in the west and Forrester Island in the southern Alaska Panhandle region in the east. The refuge has diverse landforms and terrains, including tundra, rainforest, cliffs, volcanoes, beaches, lakes, and streams.
Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is well known for its abundance of seabirds. About 75 percent of Alaskan native marine birds, 15 to 30 million among 55 species, use the refuge. AMNWR also provides a nesting habitat for an estimated 40 million seabirds, representing 80 percent of all seabirds in North America. The birds congregate in bird cities (colonies) along the coast. Each species has a specialized nesting site (rock ledge, crevice, boulder rubble, pinnacle, or burrow). Other animals present in this refuge include caribou, sea lions, bears, coyotes, seals, Canadian lynxes, beavers, foxes, muskrats, wolf packs, moose, walrus, river otters, marten, whales, Dall sheep and sea otters.
The administrative headquarters and visitor center are located in Homer, Alaska.

Alaska from Anchorage to Seward
From Alaska Travel Guide: for stock footage and complete travel program availability
Transcript:
One of the more popular day trips from anchorage
follows the seward highway along turnagain arm
Past the potter point state game refuge on the way
To portage glacier. Potter flats, a mere ten miles
From anchorage, is a wonderful place to view wild
Fowl. Over 130 species of migratory birds feed
and nest here.
The road to portage glacier also passes several
areas where you can watch salmon spawning in the
Creeks. Just inside the park a viewing platform
extends out onto the water for a birdseye view
of this natural spectacle.
Portage glacier itself is one of the most photographed
Spots in alaska. This clear blue lake with its thousands
of floating icebergs becomes a playground for
Hundreds of visitors every day.
Several trails allow
hikers to get away from the crowds and get a closer
Look at the glacier which spills into the lake some
Two and half miles from the parking area.
Some 70 miles south of portage glacier, the highway
And the alaskan railroad end at the foot of the
Chugach mountains and the port town of seward.
seward has been an important connection to the
outside world since it was founded in 1903.
These pilings are all that remain of the original
Cannery and port facility after the 1964 earthquake,
But the port was rebuilt, and stands today as one of
the best equipped fishing ports in the western
united states.
In addition to its extensive commercial fishery,
Seward is one of alaska's favorite spots for ocean
Sportfishing.
The salmon in ressurection bay are sometimes so thick that they
Seem to push each other out of the water (fish jumping),
And for the bottom fisherman, rockfish, lingcod and
Halibut abound.
But there's more to do than fish in Seward.
