Rabbi Yosef Greenberg, Lubavitch Jewish Center of Alaska, Anchorage, Senate prayer, Feb 3, 2016
Rabbi Yosef Greenberg, Lubavitch Jewish Center of Alaska, Anchorage, Senate prayer, Feb 3, 2016
Almighty God, I invoke Your blessing today on this honorable body, the United States Senate. In these troubling times, when misguided people use religion to commit the greatest crimes against humanity by stabbing and murdering innocent men, women, and children in the Middle East, Europe, Israel, the U.S.A., and all over the world, may You grant, Almighty God, that the Members of this honorable body have the wisdom and courage to embody the universal values of the Seven Commandments which You, Almighty God, issued to Noah and his family after the Great Flood, the foremost of which is not to commit murder. Grant, Almighty God, that the Members of the Senate, who assembled here today, to fulfill one of Your Seven Commandments, the Commandment to govern by just laws, understand that the United States has the ability to lead the entire world and be a role model in spreading and incorporating Your Seven Laws, and in doing so, have the power to bring healing and peace to a struggling and broken world that is facing ongoing terror and violence. Almighty God, I beseech You today to bless the Senate, in the merit of one of the spiritual giants of our time and our Nation, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of saintly blessed memory, who launched the universal campaign to bring the awareness of Your Seven Sacred Laws to all mankind, that we may all see the fulfillment of humanity's great future, as proclaimed by Isaiah [2:4], ”nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.'' Amen.
Sen. Murkowski: Mr. President, I thank the minority leader, and I rise this morning to thank and to welcome Rabbi Yosef Greenberg from Anchorage, AK, who was introduced by the President pro tempore, the Senator from Utah. This Senator thinks it is important to appreciate and realize that today there is a little bit of history being made. It is the first time we have had a rabbi from the State of Alaska who has been willing and able to provide the morning prayer before the Senate. The rabbi has led our State for two decades, beginning in 1991, not only leading a small but vibrant Jewish community across the State but also reminding us of the significance of the Jewish culture, the Jewish history, not only to Alaska but throughout the Nation. He has been instrumental in the building of the Jewish cultural center and a museum that recognizes that history and culture. Every year he is truly a leader in the broader community within Anchorage as he brings together people from all faiths at the Jewish Cultural Gala, which is probably one of our more preeminent social gatherings and which is for a good cause. The leadership of Rabbi Greenberg is not only strong and recognized within the Jewish community but across all faiths within our very broad and inclusive State of Alaska. It is indeed a pleasure to be able to listen to his words, reflect on his words, and thank him for his leadership in my State.

Teri May (Laws) Rofkar
Tlingit Name: Chaas’ Koowu Tia’a
Teri Rofkar, a Raven from the Snail House, was a renowned Tlingit artist, a weaver know nationally and internationally for her spruce tree root baskets and Ravenstail robes. She explored and mastered the gathering and Ravenstail weaving technique of twining used in the 6,000 year-old Tlingit traditional culture. Then, throughout her thirty-year career as an artist Rofkar generously shared this traditional knowledge by leading workshops, teaching and giving demonstrations and, of course, through the examples of the baskets and Ravenstail robes she created.
Born in California, she moved to Anchorage as a young child, graduated from Dimond High School in 1974, was married in October 1974 and arrived in Sitka, Alaska, in 1976. She grew up in a household where both parents were artists. In the summers Rofkar visited her maternal grandmother in the village of Pelican, Alaska who introduced her to traditional Tlingit weaving and gathering techniques at an early age.
Her Ravenstail robes and spruce root baskets are in the collections of museums throughout the country. She received many distinguished awards for her art, such as the NEA Heritage Fellowship Award for Traditional Arts in 2009 (the nation’s highest award for traditional folk arts and crafts), the Rasmuson Foundation Distinguished Artist Award in 2013 and an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of Alaska Southeast in 2015.
The more Rofkar practiced her art utilizing the traditional techniques, the more she gained insight into Tlingit culture and its connections between the present and the past, the culture and the natural world, science and math. As an individual, she cared deeply about how to live, and create, responsibly in today’s world.

SUMMARY
=======
Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage; Dena'ina: Dgheyaytnu) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. state of Alaska. With an estimated 298,192 residents in 2016, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 401,635 in 2016, which accounts for more than half of the state's population. At 1,706 square miles of land area, the city is larger than the smallest state, Rhode Island, at 1,212 square miles.Anchorage is in the south-central portion of Alaska, at the terminus of the Cook Inlet, on a peninsula formed by the Knik Arm to the north and the Turnagain Arm to the south. The city limits span 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 km2) which encompass the urban core, a joint military base, several outlying communities and almost all of Chugach State Park.Due to its location, almost equidistant from New York City, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, Anchorage lies within 9 1⁄2 hours by air of nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason, the Anchorage International Airport is a common refueling stop for many international cargo flights and home to a major FedEx hub, which the company calls a critical part of its global network of services.Anchorage has won the All-America City Award four times: in 1956, 1965, 1984–85, and 2002, by the National Civic League. It has also been named by Kiplinger as the most tax-friendly city in the United States.

Lithuanian Poet Judita Vaiciunaite (1937-2001), with Svaja Worthington and Leslie Fried
The art, life, and times of Lithuanian Poet Judita Vaiciunaite (1937-2001) is highlighted at this bi-lingual event with Svaja Worthington and Leslie Fried.
Judita Vaiciunaite's poetry explored a wide field of experience, from Lithuanian mythology to jazz, and from historical figures to contemporary city dwellers. Regarded as a poet of the city and the night, she is also a re-creator of myths... She was fascinated by human events which occur within the backdrop of Vilnius' Old City, where she spent most of her life... The beauty and meaning for her are contained in details of everyday life and fragments of our daily existence.
Svaja Vansauskas Worthington was just 18 months old when her family fled Lithuania to escape the devastation caused by World War II. For the past 40 years, she has called Alaska home. In 2013, she was named the Honorary Consul from the State of Alaska to the Republic of Lithuania. Her translations of 2 poems by Judita Vaiciunaite appear in Cirque Literary Journal Vol. 6, no. 2.
Leslie Fried is the curator of the Alaska Jewish Museum in Anchorage. She received a BA in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Oregon and holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington.

Earth Day 2009 #1: Upper Peninsula EarthKeepers plant first of 12,000 trees across northern Michigan
Marquette, MI - Despite a major snowstorm a day earlier, bishops and leaders from northern Michigan's largest faith communities planted the first of 12,000 trees during an Earth Day ceremony on the shores of Lake Superior.
Standing on a hillside surrounded by huge pine trees two bishops and several other faith leaders blessed a three-foot native species white spruce tree and took turns putting shovels full of dirt into the hole.
With a cold wind blowing and the icy waves of Lake Superior crashing in the background, the Earth Day 2009 blessing of the trees ceremony on Presque Isle, thats surrounded on three sides by the largest freshwater lake on the planet.
The storm dumped up to 20 inches of snow in parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, however several weeks of mild weather ensured the ground was not frozen.
Anticipating the cold April weather, organizers earlier decided to plant the rest of the trees on Sunday, May 3 when the weather is more appropriate for planting the 12,000 12-to-16-inch seedlings at numerous locations across northern Michigan including 100 churches and temples.
The EarthKeeper team includes ten faith traditions (Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist Church, Unitarian Universalist, Baha'i, Jewish, Zen Buddist, Quakers) with over 150 participating churches/temples, nonprofit Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP), nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute (CTI), and the Northern Michigan University EarthKeeper (NMU EK) Student Team.
The concept of EarthKeeping goes beyond the Upper Peninsula because throughout the Great Lakes states we're having a ripple effect as people and groups are replicating the work that the EarthKeepers have done here, said Carl Lindquist, SWP executive director. Theyre patterning their events after some of the successful programs we have had here.
Michigan faith leaders favor protecting the environment.
This is very much a marvelous moment in the life of our work together as faith communities, said Rev. Jon Magnuson, CTI executive director and EarthKeeper Initiative co-founder. This is another step in our interfaith work. We have found an expression of our faith in very, very hands-on work like this the EarthKeeping Tree Project.
All humans are called to be steward's of God's creation - and no matter what faith tradition we come from that responsibility lies with us human creatures, said Roman Catholic Diocese of Marquette Bishop Alexander Sample.
Those of us endowed with intelligence and with the ability to choose good and avoid evil, said Bishop Sample, who oversees 94 U.P. parishes and missions with 61,000 members.
Bishop Sample said the book of Revelations speaks of the life-giving power of water and how the tree draws its life from the water.
Bishop Sample said he grew up in the desert southwest and didn't see a lot of water or the beauty of the forests and trees. Sample said I truly thought I had entered paradise when he moved with his family to the Upper Peninsula at the age of 17.
This whole movement has focused on how the faith communities can work together to preserve this great gift that we have here in the Upper Peninsula, this great watershed and it's wonderful combination of lakes and streams, and forests everywhere, said Northern Great Lakes Synod Lutheran Bishop Thomas Skrenes.
Trees cover the earth and trees are part of healing the earth, said Skrenes, the head of 94 U.P. Lutheran congregations with 40,000 members
The Earth Keeper's ten faith communities have various ways of doing things and looking at life but come together for this important task, said United Methodist Church (UMC) Marquette District Superintendent Grant R. Lobb.
We are glad to be part of EarthKeepers, said Lobb, whose district has 8,372 parishioners and 60 northern Michigan congregations.

Easter Totem Pole (UMTV)
Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest area in North America often passed knowledge on through totem poles. These carvings in cedar tell stories as books do. United Methodist pastor David Fison spent years serving congregations in Alaska. Fison was inspired to create totem poles to tell the biblical stories of Easter and Christmas in symbols familiar to the native peoples. Alaska native Charley Brower says, The story that they tell, is heartwarming for us. People like Dave Fison saw that there are natives there with their own way of telling stories and relating to our Creator. In this video, Fison shares what each symbol on his Easter totem pole signifies and his own spiritual journey as a craftsman.
UMTV videos feature United Methodists living their faith and making a positive difference in the world. This channel is managed by United Methodist Communications in Nashville, TN. Contact FWalsh@UMCom.org for more info.
OTIS/Adams/GAL Hydraulic Elevator-Connecticut River Museum; Essex, CT
Well, here it is again, the OTIS with Adams buttons and GAL components. What an odd elevator! It's not everyday you find an OTIS with Adams fixtures (don't believe me, watch the video, and you will see OTIS inscribed on the panel). It's just as odd as the OTIS with GAL I found. However, I believe they come from the same time period (early 1980's to mid 1980's).
The elevator itself was installed somewhere in the mid to late 1980's (I doubt 1982 as I had previously stated). Since then, it seems to have survived the test of time. In 2010, there was a fire on the exterior of the museum. Although the fire happened on the other side of the building, some smoke or water damage may have happened on that side, though. In 2012, the first floor of the museum was flooded out by Hurricane Sandy. Despite all of that, the elevator still runs.

Dover Classic Elevator - Arizona State Museum (Tucson, AZ)
[Filmed on March 28, 2013 in 1080p60.]
Dedicated to cubsrule2040, because this is the only original Dover elevator I found in Tucson.
This is the only interesting elevator in all of the University of Arizona campus. Like I stated before, all of their elevators have generic Epco/Adams Survivor Plus fixtures. [Revision Note: Most of the elevators at U of A that I filmed were newly modernized, not newly installed. That gave the impression that the elevators were new.] This elevator has been slightly modified. You can tell they added the ADA compliant emergency phone and added a keyed stop switch (which is probably Innovation).
