Natives Honored for Protecting Alaska in WWII
(27 May 2017) Relatives of deceased members of a largely Native Alaskan citizen militia who guarded the U.S. territory during World War II have received Army discharge papers meant as a posthumous honor.
Gov. Bill Walker was among the officials who presented the documents to family members of 16 volunteers from the Alaska Territorial Guard during a ceremony Friday in Anchorage.
Nearly 2,600 discharge papers have been issued since 2004 as militia members or relatives are found or apply for them. Alaska Native Heritage Center officials plan to make the ceremony a yearly event.
In 1942, before Alaska was a state, the 6,400-member militia was formed to defend the territory from the threat of Japanese invasion.
The unit disbanded in 1947, but its members weren't recognized by the Army until 2004.

Alaska at War
The Alaska at War film project was an effort to document events of World War II in Alaska. It was funded by the Alaska Legislature through the Alaska Historical Commission and was supported by the Alaska Historical Society and private subscription. The production work was performed by aurora Films, assisted by a citizen's advisory committee. The production Alaska at War was first shown in public on Alaska Day, October 18th 1986.
This collection was deposited in the University of Alaska Anchorage, Archives and Special collections Department by the Alaska Historical Commission in 1987. Additional papers were presented to the archives by the Alaska Air Command Historian's Office in 1989; and by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, in 1990. The University of Alaska Anchorage offered these records to the Alaska State Archives July of 2010. Copyright to the production is retained by the State of Alaska. Reproduction of some photographs, oral history recordings, and film out takes requires the permission of the State of Alaska, Aurora Films, the interviewee, writer, or library of origin.
A special thanks goes to Damon Stuebner of the Alaska State Library, Historical Collections for his technical assistance.

Alaska Public Lands Information Center Museum in Anchorage Tour (4K)
We toured the Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Anchorage. This is actually a nice museum and free to get in. We heard it about it from our guide in the Alaska City Trolley Tour (see our video on that here: )
Interestingly it is actually a Federal building so you must submit to a security screening process similar to one you would undertake nowadays at an airport. The exhibits were pretty realisitic and informative. There is also a theater where you can watch short (~15 minutes) informational/educational features regarding Alaska.
There was even a scavenger hunt for kids where they can get a small prize.
The Alaska Public Lands Information Center was a short walk away from where we were dropped off from a free Port of Anchorage shuttle. This was from our June 2017 14 day Alaska Cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam.

Alaska Aviation History (1978)
Excerpt from Alaska Review 11. In this segment, Alaska Review reports on early Alaska aviation, with photos and film clips of Alaska pioneer aviators and their aircraft. The report leads into a discussion of current air routes and the controversies surrounding air service to bush communities in Alaska. (Sound/Color/2-inch quad videotape).
Airing from 1976 to 1987, Alaska Review was the first statewide public affairs television program in Alaska. The show was designed to explore public policy issues confronting Alaska, and to assist citizens in making decisions about the future of their land. Produced by Independent Public Television, Inc., (IPTV), the series eventually consisted of 16 one-hour shows, 46 half-hour shows, and one three-hour special broadcast. Funded through the Alaska Humanities Forum and State of Alaska, the series won multiple awards for public service and educational programming. IPTV dissolved in 1988. Videotapes for all finished productions and raw footage were later moved to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where they became housed with the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives department in the Rasmuson Library at UAF, shortly after the unit was founded in 1993. The Alaska Film Archives is currently seeking funding to preserve and digitize all of the original full interviews gathered in the making of the Alaska Review series. Copies of finished productions are also held by Alaska State Library Historical Collections in Juneau. For more information, please contact the Alaska Film Archives at University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-4956 from the Alaska Review collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska Film Archives is supported by the Rasmuson Rare Books Endowment. For more information please contact the Alaska Film Archives.
Anchorage Downtown Tour (Visitor Information Center, Reindeer Sausage, Veteran's Memorial Monument)
Take a look and see what downtown Anchorage looks like. We arrived there via a complimentary shuttle service from the Port of Anchorage (see our video of that here: ). Once downtown, we checked out the Anchorage Visitor Information Center, a cool log cabin with a garden roof. From there we took a one hour Anchorage city tour on a trolley (video: ), saw the historic City Hall, then visited the Alaska Public Lands Information Center Museum (video: ). We then hiked the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail (video: ) before checking out Veteran's Memorial Monument at Delaney Park, and then taking a look at the grounds of the Alaska Center of the Performing Arts. If you do visit Anchorage, don't forget to check out the Reindeer Sausage which was pretty tasty!

Trump stops off in Alaska on way to Japan for troops meet and greet
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are on their way to Tokyo, Japan to meet with the nation's new emperor and empress. The U.S. president fielded 14 minutes of questions from reporters about the trip as he left the White House - and none of them were about Japan, suggesting his mind was elsewhere. He proceeded to rage about the Mueller report from aboard Air Force One. He said in a tweet several hours into the longhaul fight: 'The Dems want a second shot at Bob Mueller, are very unhappy with the No Collusion Report. They should not be allowed to play this game any longer - no second chances - must get back to work. So bad for our Country!' Trump spoke told reporters on the South Lawn, before he boarded Marine One to depart for the five-day trip, that Democrats are asking for a re-do of the investigations, and they can't have one. He ignored questions about his intentions and plans for the visit and answered questions about his strained relationship with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the 'transparency' of his Attorney General Bill Barr, instead. Since he embarked on the trip, he's sent a single tweet acknowledging the visit. 'Departed the @WhiteHouse and am now on Air Force One with the First Lady heading to Japan and looking forward to honoring, on behalf of the United States, His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan. I will also be discussing Trade and Military with my friend, Prime Minister @Shinzo Abe,' he said. A senior White House official told press before Trump left that trade negotiations were not the focus of the trip and were unlikely to come up. But Trump signaled with his tweet that he plans to will the conversation in that direction.
