University of Texas marks 50th anniversary of tower mass shooting
This animation depicts events at the University of Texas on August 1, 1966, and marks the 50th anniversary of sniper Charles Whitman shooting 14 people dead and wounding 31 others.
As the bell tower clock at the university’s Austin campus ticked towards noon that day, the 25-year-old student and former U.S, Marine Corps sharpshooter embarked on a devastating onslaught, which lasted more than 90 minutes and caught the Austin Police Department completely off-guard.
The massacre ended when police officers shot Whitman dead. Police found an arsenal of weapons in a storage chest next to Whitman, including three rifles, three pistols and a sawn-off shotgun. An autopsy revealed the shooter had a brain tumor, which may have impacted his ability to control his emotions.
At the time, the massacre was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history — an unwelcome record that stood until 1984.
Mass shootings have become a regular occurrence in the United States in the 50 years since the Texas tower shooting. Last year alone, there were 372 such incidents, of which 64 were on school campuses, according to the FBI.
August 1 sees a “concealed campus carry” law come into effect, allowing license holders to carry concealed handguns on public university campuses in Texas.
Fifty years on from Whitman’s deadly attack, the role of mental health in mass shootings remains an issue and the country appears unable to learn the lessons of its bloody past to provide a safe and secure environment for students.

Dedication ceremony held for Louisiana Veterans Memorial Park
A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony was held for the Louisiana Veterans Memorial Park in Baton Rouge on Friday.
The grounds of the Old Arsenal Museum was designated as the new memorial park.
The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs (LDVA) said the park is the first on state property to recognize the hundreds of thousands of people from Louisiana who have served, been wounded, or been killed while serving in the US
military.

Baton Rouge's Downtown Development District celebrates 30 years
When Davis Rhorer was hired to work for the Downtown Development District in 1987, he had a vision for a downtown Baton Rouge.
In the beginning, Catfish Town was closed, old State Capitol was closed, the old Arsenal was closed, the old Governor's Mansion was closed, so we had a lot of things to do just to get them back open, said Rhorer.
But now, all of those buildings are open and many now function as tourist attractions. From restaurants and bars, to housing, grocery stores, and more than 11 acres of green space, downtown has now somewhat become its own city.
My generation of people do not have a history with downtown Baton Rouge because there was nothing to go to. They did not have any bars or anything when I was at LSU, so it is a whole new generation of people that have taken ownership, first to have fun, and then to live, said Rhorer.
As the company begins to celebrate 30 years since downtown's revival, there are 12 ongoing projects, including a renovated library. One new project is the Desoto Park Nature Trails. It's 20 acres of land right on the Mississippi River next to the State Capitol that Rhorer says they want to put to good use. At this time, it's still a proposal and they're looking for grants to fund the project, but the group is hopeful it will soon become reality and one more thing to attract people to downtown.
