The first public zoo in New South Wales (NSW) officially opened in Sydney in 1884 on a site known as Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, operated by the Zoological Society of NSW which was founded in March 1879.
After a visit to Germany in 1908 the elected Secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, returned with a vision for a new Sydney zoo, based on the bar-less exhibits of Hamburg Zoo. The site at Moore Park had become too small and was not suited to the vision. A new site for the zoo was sought. On April 24th, 1912 the NSW Government granted 43 acres of land north of the harbour which were part of Ashton Park. Another 9 acres were granted in April 1916.
In 1913, Management of the zoo passed to a Trust named the New Zoological Gardens Trust which became the Taronga Zoological Park Trust.
The first exhibits to be built were the seal ponds, elephant temple, monkey pits, top entrance, aviaries, paths and roadways and the refreshment rooms. In all, 228 mammals, 552 birds and 64 reptiles were moved from Moore Park to Taronga. Many, including the elephants, crossed the harbour on board a flat top barge.
Taronga Zoo Sydney was officially opened on October 7th, 1916.
New exhibits and facilities were developed over time. The Giraffe House was completed in 1923, the Aquarium in 1927, Floral Clock in 1928, Tahr Mountain in 1932 and the Tiger Pits in 1939. Under the directorship of Edward Hallstrom in the 1940's - 1960's several new exhibits were built including those for larger cats, koalas, apes and gorillas.

he Spit Bridge, a steel and concrete girder bridge with a bascule lift span across the Middle Harbour, is located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northeast of the central business district in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The bridge carries The Spit Road (A8) from a point called The Spit, and connects the suburbs of Mosman, on the south bank and Seaforth, on the north bank.
In February 1997, a notice was published in the Government Gazette by Mosman Council advising that they had assigned Mosman as the only suburb in the Mosman Local Government Area. However, Mosman Council decided that residents should continue to be allowed to use the following traditional locality names if they wished
Mosman was originally inhabited by the Borogegal tribe.[4] Bungaree (c1775–1830) was a well known Aboriginal who joined British explorers on voyages, including circumnavigating Australia with Matthew Flinders when he was 26. He later became leader of his tribe, was given land at Georges Head, and enjoyed the patronage of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. He greeted newcomers whose ships entered Port Jackson, and became acquainted with Russian and French explorers. His image was painted many times and shown in London, Paris, and Moscow.
1789 HMS Sirius—the flagship of the First Fleet—entered what is now known as Mosman Bay or Great Sirius Cove. Mosman has been the site of important maritime and defence installations for Sydney since 1801, especially when Sydney's Harbour defences were expanded with the construction of Middle Head Fort, Georges Head Battery and Bradleys Head Fortification Complex. In 1871 the Beehive Casemate was constructed into the cliff side on Obelisk Bay.[5]
A Submarine Miners’ Depot was constructed at Chowder Bay (Georges Head) in the 1880s. In 1888 the site was modified for the latest in harbour defences. The site was a strategic position and considered the best place to observe and fire mines which were laid underwater. Minefields were laid across the main shipping channels of Port Jackson from 1876 to 1922 and a base was built at Chowder Bay for the submarine miners (Clifton Gardens). From Georges Head, miners watched for ships entering the harbour. Their job was to explode the mine closest to an approaching enemy ship. Each underwater mine was attached to an electric cable that ran up the cliff to the firing post.[6][7] During a demonstration in 1891, a crowd of several thousand people watched as a fatal accident killed four miners and injured another eight.
Mosman's Bay by John Mather, 1889
In the 1880s and 1890s, as a result of the enthusiasm for painting en plein air fostered by the Barbizon and Impressionist movements in France, art colonies known as the Sydney artists' camps flourished around the Harbour mainly in the Mosman area.[8] As a result, Mosman became known as Australia's most painted suburb.[9] Notable painters in this community included Julian Ashton, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and John Mather.
In 1942 during the Second World War the Sydney Harbour anti-submarine boom net was constructed on Georges Head and was designed to prevent enemy submarines from entering into Sydney Harbour. The boom net spanned the entire width of Port Jackson and a boom net winch house was located on Liangs Point, Watsons Bay. On the night of 31 May 1942, three Japanese midget submarines attempted to enter Sydney Harbour in what became known as the .[10][11] One of the Japanese midget submarines became entangled in the boom net and after unsuccessful attempts by the crew to free the submarine they detonated charges within the sub, killing themselves and destroying their sub in the process.

Mosman is a local suburb, part of the Lower North Shore of Sydney. Located only 8km from Sydney CBD. It is a prosperous quiet leafy suburb surrounded by 3 sides of water making it an attractive place to live.
Long before European settlers arrived, Aborigines occupied the Australian continent for as long as 40,000 years. Mosman had an Aboriginal tribe known as the Borogegal tribe. Bungaree (c1775-1830) was the leader of this tribe and the most well known Aborigine in Mosman's history. Most of Bungarees' tribe died of smallpox. At age 26 he joined the British explorers on voyages to the far north as well as circumnavigating Australia with Matthew Flinders.
Being leader of his tribe, he was given land at Georges Head. Bungaree welcomed newcomers as their ships entered Sydney Harbour, and made friends with Russian explorers. The French also became acquaintances of Bungaree. He spent most of his life the traditional Aboriginal way, hunting and fishing and providing for his family. Throughout his whole life he was respected amongst his own people as well as the new settlers from Europe. He was known to have been the first Aboriginal to be called an Australian.
The flagship for the First Fleet was HMS Sirius. It was careened at Mosman Bay also known as Great Sirius Cove in 1789. Mosman Bay was chosen because it was best described as a convenient retired cove on the north shore. Mosman has been known for its maritime and defence installations as early as 1801. Thomas O'Neil cultivated land at Balmoral between 1811-1813. Captain John Edwards settled in the area c1823. Not long after a ferryboat was plied across Middle Harbour by Barney Kearns.
The whaling industry was brought to Chowder Bay by the late 1820's, it was also used as an anchorage for American whalers. Grants of land at Mosman Bay were allocated to Archibald Mosman and John Bell in 1831 to establish a whaling station. The whaling industry was good to Archibald Mosman, who then sold his business at its peak and moved to Glenn Innes. By the 1840's the whaling industry was declining and Mosman Bay was then used to overhaul ships.
