Journey to Askja, Iceland. October 2016
We drove to Askja via F905 (Route 1 from Myvatn then F905). This ride requires fording two small rivers.
Askja | ICELAND #8????????
Just north of the Vatnajökull glacier is where Askja, a massive caldera and volcano, can be found amid the Dyngjufjöll mountains. The caldera is made up of bedrock that sits atop a huge magma chamber that is still growing. It was the 19th century before Askja was properly explored, with a series of eruptions between 1874 and 1875 making the area a place of interest for locals and scientists alike. There was a particularly large eruption in March 1875, with about 2 billion cubic meters of ash and pumice sent skywards. The blast formed a new caldera inside the existing one. In the years that followed, the caldera filled with water and formed the 11km² Lake Öskjuvatn, one of the deepest in all of Iceland. There were a few other eruptions in the 1920’s, but the volcano has been silent since it last erupted in the autumn of 1961.

The area was used during training for the Apollo program to prepare astronauts for the lunar missions. Their main objective in Askja was to study geology.
Askja was virtually unknown until the tremendous eruption which started on March 29, 1875. Especially in the eastern fjords of Iceland, the ashfall was heavy enough to poison the land and kill livestock. Ash, or tephra from this eruption was wind-blown to Norway and Sweden. The eruption triggered a substantial wave of emigration from Iceland. Another less well-known eruption occurred in the early Holocene, ca 11,000 years ago. Tephra from this eruption has been found in south-east Sweden, Northern Ireland and north Norway. The last eruption of Askja was in 1961.

Iceland Magma column North of the Askja Volcano 13th November 2019
There appears to be a magma column north of the Askja Volcano which is also very active in earthquakes. I wonder if that will reach the surface or will Askja. Let us hope it is not Askja as that has a reservoir of water in the crater and that would make it explosive
